Rare 1970s Volkswagen Beetles Converted Into Mobile Homes, A.K.A. “Bug Campers”

Megi7 — Mon, 03 Apr 2017 13:10:33 +0000

Most people probably associate Volkswagen with its iconic Beetle. However, only a few know that in the 1970s people used to transform their little “bugs” into Super Buggers. These hybrid RVs were used for cross-country trips and the bugs-on-drugs looked like VW Microbus’ little brother.

The first VW Beetle was constructed in the 1930s, but The Super Bugger was the brainchild of a third party company that made and sold the unusual vehicle for $6,000 in 1975 (which is about $32,000 in today’s economy). They used fiberglass paneling to build a small living space behind the front seats, and those who liked to travel would insert either a mini-bedroom or a modest kitchen inside to ride with convenience.

Vibrant Life Of 1970s Harlem In Street Photos By Jack Garofalo

The 1970s had a unique vitality and aesthetic imprint unlike any other decade before or since. Jack Garofalo (1923-2004), an accomplished street photographer for Paris Match magazine, spent the summer of 1970 documenting the vibrant life of Harlem, a neighborhood that was undergoing an existential crisis at the time.

Harlem in the 1970s was undergoing an exodus, as anyone who could was moving to other neighborhoods in New York to escape the neighborhood’s poor infrastructure and crime. Some stayed because they couldn’t move out, while others stayed because they wanted to. But despite the difficulties, the neighborhood was an undeniably vibrant place.
