Completed in September 2016, China’s Pingtang telescope is now the world’s largest radio telescope. Its dish measures 1,640 feet across and is capable of capturing signals more than 1,000 light-years from Earth.

After 17 years of construction, the Gotthard Base Tunnel opened in Switzerland on June 1, 2016. At 35 miles long, it’s both the longest and deepest train tunnel in the world, offering unprecedented efficiency when traveling through the Alps.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge project will link three cities in China’s Pearl River Delta — creating one mega-city of 42 million people — when it’s completed in 2017.

Dubai’s Mall of the World will be a colossal domed structure nine times bigger than the Mall of America. When it opens in 2029, it will be temperature-controlled, feature thousands of hotel rooms, and have its own transit line.

Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc., is developing plans to create “Smart Cities” — redeveloped areas with complete Internet access, renewable energy, and the latest in automated technology — throughout the US.

The Riyadh Metro, Saudi Arabia’s new $23.5 billion rail line will boast a station designed by Zaha Hadid. Its 109 miles of railway will revolutionize how residents of Riyadh get around. It’s set to begin operation by 2019.

Songdo, South Korea is a so-called “smart city” located on 1,500 acres of waterfront land. Completed in 2015, Songdo’s near-comprehensive Internet access gives its 67,000 residents a taste of future society.

The South–North Water Transfer Project is an ongoing Chinese effort to move nearly 45 billion cubic feet of water from the Yangtze River to the country’s less fertile northern regions. More than $79 billion has been spent on the migration so far.

In July of 2016, Norway announced plans to spend a reported $25 billion on a fully submerged, floating tunnel beneath the Sognefjord, a body of water more than 4,000 feet deep and 3,000 feet wide. It would be the first of its kind in the world.

The 20-year Turkey Urban Renewal Project, a far-reaching plan to demolish some 7 million buildings and rebuild earthquake-resistant structures in their place, began in 2012 with an estimated cost of $400 billion.

Humans may have finally exited the food chain thanks to evolution and ingenuity, but we aren’t the toughest creatures on this planet. (If you took away our technology and toys.) In fact, we’re not even the biggest.
Compared to these 22 behemoths, we’re tiny and frail. There are domesticated animals that dwarf us… and then there’s the giant oarfish, man o’ war jellyfish and much, much more. These animals are so naturally big, it’s freaky.

Percheron supreme world champion: This enormous horse stands 19 hands high and is a world champion for good reason.

Giant oarfish: These rarely seen fish have washed up on shore, freaking out beachgoers.

Japanese spider crab: A fishing staple for Japan, these crabs can weigh up to 41lbs and do serious damage with their claws.

 Flying fox: This fruit-eating bat is found in New Guinea and is the largest bat on the planet.

Trigger the cow: Trigger is 6.5 feet tall, 14 feet long and weighs over 1 ton. He could produce 7,665 Big Macs.

This beetle is found in South America, and the titan beetle is second only to the Hercules beetle in size. It can grow up to 6.5 inches.

Mekong catfish: These giant fish are found in China’s polluted waterways. They can grow up to 10.5 feet long and feed on the nightmares of children (we can only assume).

Macroptychaster sea stars: These giant starfish were found by scientists in Antarctic waters in 2008. We THINK they were heard from again.

Nomura’s jellyfish: This jellyfish is found off the coast of Japan and can weigh up to 440lbs. It’s about the same size as the lion’s mane jellyfish, the largest in the world. It’s easy to understand how Japan came up with Godzilla.

Giant hog: This wild, giant hog was taken down by an 11 year-old hunter. Think it’s fake? His name was Jamison Stone (the boy, not the hog). The pig weighed 1,051 lbs and measured 9-feet-4 from the tip of its snout to the base of its tail.

African goliath frog: You can find these big frogs in Cameroon. They can live up to 15 years and will eat anything: bugs, snakes, other frogs, dreams.

Giant huntsman spider: This giant bird-eating spider can be found in Laos and its much bigger than its cousin in Australia (the land of giant, dangerous animals). It spends its time hiding in the dark in caves (and under your bed).

Giant Great Dane: George the dog earned his spot in Guinness World Records for the biggest dog. He weighed over 245 lbs and ate over 110 lbs of kibble a month. His adorableness is also off the charts.

Coconut crabs: These aren’t as delicious as they sound. They are actually giant crabs with claws powerful enough to crack coconuts. It is found on islands across the Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific Ocean.

Giant freshwater stingray: Otherwise known as nightmare fuel, these monsters can grow up to 1,300 lbs and are actually endangered.

Giant rat: This huge rat was killed in a Bronx, NY Foot Locker back in January of 2012. It looks fake and people should hope it’s fake… but reports seem to indicate this was a real rat that was killed. And it was real big.

Saltwater crocodile: This is the largest crocodile that was ever captured, over 21 feet long. It was captured alive after a three week hunt.

Giant weta cricket: Jiminy Cricket here is only found on a small island near New Zealand (the lesser Monster Island, next to Australia). It’s large enough to devour a carrot. And probably your hand.

Chinese giant salamander: This lizard can grow up to 6 ft in length, it’s almost completely blind. It’s also the largest amphibian in the world. you can find them in streams and lakes in China.

Cane toad: Originally found in South and Central America, these toads are a nuisance to Australia’s (dangerous) wildlife. It has few predators because of it’s extremely toxic skin.

African giant snail: Escargot? More like escar-NO. This giant snail is found in East Africa and can reach up to 8 inches in length. It’s a nuisance pest of urban areas, and it spreads human disease.

What makes it a flop: Despite all the hype — this is, of course, the movie where Nicole Kidman pees on Zac Efron — The Paperboy was panned by critics and largely ignored by audiences. The A.V. Club rated it the worst movie of the year.
Silver lining: Kidman’s performance earned praise; she was even nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

2. “The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure”

Budget: $20 million
Box office: $1.1 million
Critics say: “Enduring this brainless kid’s film is akin to witnessing the end of the world.” —Nick Schager, Slant magazine
What makes it a flop: Conceived (and financed) by the man who brought Teletubbies to the U.S., The Oogieloves should have been the start of a new franchise. Instead, it became the biggest Box office bomb ever released in more than 2,000 theaters.
Silver lining: Parents will never have to endure another Oogieloves outing.

3. “Dredd”

Budget: $45 million
Box office: $36.4 million worldwide
Critics say: “We have seen this future. And not only does it not work — it no longer even surprises.” —Stephen Whitty, Newark Star-Ledger
What makes it a flop: For a 3-D action movie, Dredd’s numbers are a particularly brutal disappointment. Strangely enough, the reviews were largely marginally positive.
Silver lining: That 77% on Rotten Tomatoes will keep someone warm at night. Maybe.

4. “The Man with the Iron Fists”

Budget: $20 million
Box office: $18.4 million
Critics say: “Lunatic, slipshod, absurdly violent, horribly acted, and borderline incomprehensible.” —Ty Burr, Boston Globe
What makes it a flop: Written by RZA and Eli Roth, starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu, an homage to martial arts classics, The Man with the Iron Fists should have been so much bigger than it was. Unfortunately, it was a mess.
Silver lining: The soundtrack, executive produced by RZA, has at least earned mostly favorable reviews.

5. “A Thousand Words”

Budget: $40 million
Box office: $20.6 million
Critics say: “Eddie Murphy should have just said the word ‘no’ to this tired, formulaic comedy.” —Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
What makes it a flop: Once one of Hollywood’s top earners, Murphy is now the year’s most overpaid actor.
Silver lining: Hopefully A Thousand Words will serve as a reminder that Eddie Murphy isn’t the draw he once was, which means he might actually need good material to help make a profit.

6. “Atlas Shrugged: Part II”

Budget: $10 million
Box office: $3.3 million
Critics say: “A disaster as a film, Atlas also is laughable in its presentation of Rand’s ideology.” —Tirdad Derakhshani, Philadelphia Inquirer
What makes it a flop: Producers intended to finance Part II with the profits from Part I. That bombed too, so the sequel was financed through a private debt sale. Bigger Budget, same disaster.
Silver lining: Ayn Rand looks more ridiculous than ever.

7. “Chasing Mavericks”

Budget: $20 million
Box office: $5.8 million
Critics say: “It’s a perfect fortune cookie of a movie, full of bland life lessons for everybody; would that there were some drama or style in it somewhere along the way.” —Bilge Ebiri, New York Magazine
What makes it a flop: Chasing Mavericks was codirected by Curtis Hanson, responsible for hits like L.A. Confidential and In Her Shoes. Alas, none of that Box office magic here.
Silver lining: Gerard Butler fully recovered after a surfing accident on set. He’s probably pretty jazzed about that.

8. “That’s My Boy”

Budget: $70 million
Box office: $57.7 million
Critics say: “If someone told you about almost every joke in That’s My Boy, you would think they were either a sociopath or a budding serial killer.” —James Rocchi, MSN Movies
What makes it a flop: Like Eddie Murphy, Sandler is not the box-office star he once was. That’s My Boy was his worst opening since 2007’s 9/11 drama Reign Over Me.
Silver lining: Criticized for its homophobia and misogyny, as well as making light of pedophilia and statutory rape, it might be a good thing that so few actually saw it.

9. “Rock of Ages”

Budget: $75 million
Box office: $56.4 million
Critics say: “Rock of Ages is not a spoof, but it might as well be, given how little there is to root for.” —Anthony Lane, New Yorker
What makes it a flop: While the live stage show is still a smash hit on Broadway — much to serious theatergoers’ chagrin — the movie adaptation could not recoup its high Budget.
Silver lining: Rock of Ages still did relatively well for a musical, with the sixth-highest opening ever for the genre. It’s also very likely destined to become a cult classic.

10. “Won’t Back Down”

Budget: $19 million
Box office: $5.3 million
Critics say: “So didactic that viewers are likely to feel less uplifted than lectured.” —Ann Hornaday, Washington Post
What makes it a flop: Won’t Back Down doesn’t even succeed as an issues movie — it’s been criticized as anti-teacher’s union propaganda and a mouthpiece for conservative activist Philip Anschutz.
Silver lining: For all its valiant attempts, the film doesn’t appear to have done any serious damage.

11. “Alex Cross”

Budget: $35 million
Box office: $25.8 million
Critics say: “So cloddish, slapdash, gracelessly written, and visually fugly that it’s difficult to distinguish Perry’s limitations in the role from those of the whole unpleasant enterprise.” —Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly
What makes it a flop: Tyler Perry is one of Hollywood’s top successes — in 2011, Forbes named him the highest paid man in entertainment. A flop starring Perry is extra embarrassing.
Silver lining: Because he’s Tyler Perry, however, he still gets to play Alex Cross in the sequel, Double Cross, which is actually happening.

12. “The Apparition”

Budget: $17 million
Box office: $9.6 million
Critics say: “Might give you a restless night, but only because you fell asleep in the theater.” —Keith Staskiewicz, Entertainment Weekly
What makes it a flop: It came and went like a ghost for a reason — Warner Bros. wanted this turkey to just go away.
Silver lining: The studio wanted to make The Apparition disappear, and it did. So, successful lack of marketing?

13. “People Like Us”

Budget: $16 million
Box office: $12.4 million
Critics say: “It seems ridiculous to dance around plot details when the movie allows the audience to get ahead of the story and to stay there as events laboriously unfold.” —Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
What makes it a flop: People Like Us was supposed to be “awards bait,” but despite the A-list stars and serious subject matter, it couldn’t even earn back its Budget.
Silver lining: It wasn’t universally reviled. In fact, many top critics praised the strong writing and compelling story.

14. “Wanderlust”

Budget: $35 million
Box office: $21.5 million
Critics say: “A random, tedious and tone-deaf comedy, a feeble recycling of every hippie commune cliche you’ve ever heard.” —Roger Moore, McClatchy-Tribune News Service
What makes it a flop: David Wain films (Wet Hot American Summer, Role Models) vary in terms of box-office success, but they at least tend to be beloved among comedy fans. Wanderlust had a much more muted response.
Silver lining: Even detractors liked the cast of Wain standbys, including Paul Rudd, Joe Lo Truglio, Ken Marino, and Kerri Kenney-Silver.

15. “Trouble with the Curve”

Budget: $60 million
Box office: $46.3 million
Critics say: “This isn’t the worst performance Eastwood has given in his 57-year career, but it’s his least inspired in about a decade.” —James Berardinelli, ReelViews
What makes it a flop: Trouble With the Curve was Eastwood’s first acting role since 2008’s Gran Torino, which was a huge box-office success. Maybe we can blame the fact that he didn’t direct?
Silver lining: Since it was released a month after Eastwood’s disastrous speech at the Republican National Convention, the film was at least a temporary distraction from his debate with an empty chair.

Some of the more notable species are four beluga whales, manta rays and young whale sharks (the only aquarium outside of Asia to hold this species). The aquarium is situated around a central atrium, with five different galleries to visit, which are the Tropical Diver, Cold-Water Quest, Georgia Explorer, River Scout and Ocean Voyager.

The aquarium construction was largely funded by Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus’ $250 million donation. The aquarium sits on 20 acres just north of the Centennial Olympic Park and opened to the general public in November of 2005.
