After enduring decades of abuse and neglect, the 60 year old Lakhi has been finally rescued. On 26th February, 2015, elephant was gently encouraged to walk into a special ten wheel truck that was hired for this very purpose and start her final journey to her new home.

The Wildlife SOS team will be bringing ophthalmology experts from the UK to explore the possibility of restoring vision in at least one of her eyes. This will improve her welfare considerably.

Her appearance made it clear that her diet has not been nutritious

Walking on the tar roads for years has severely affected her foot pads and toenails. Lakhi has chronic, painful injuries that have never received proper medical treatment. Adding to her pain and discomfort were the spiked chains kept consistently around her feet, which led to puncture and abrasion injuries.

She has reached her new home Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Center in Mathura where she will live her life with dignity and peace.

During the journey to Lakhi’s new home, the team decided to stop for a break and let her out of the truck to walk and stretch a little!

When a baby elephant got stuck in a watering hole in Addo Elephant National Park, South Africa, some rangers came to its rescue. They put their own lives at risk to save the life of this baby elephant and succeeded.

A 10 person team of vets and wildlife experts were joined by 20 forestry department officers and 6 police officers. Raju had an army rescuing him.

There are too many cases of animal cruelty across the globe that would shock you with their ferocity. The story of Raju the elephant is just one of those stories.

For 50 years, Raju was held captive in the Uttar Pradesh area of India. Day after day, massive spiked chains cut into his starved, frail flesh. His “owner” tied him and forced him to beg for handouts from tourists, holding out his trunk.

One day, the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department in India alerted a North London-based charity, Wildlife SOS, of Raju’s plight. When they discovered what this poor creature had to deal with, the flew to India to rescue him.

They never expected what Raju did during his incredible rescue.

They found Raju chained, as he was for years.

The team attempted the rescue at night, so that there would be less interference from bystanders or his “owner.”

Raju’s wounds were constantly open; the spikes on his chains dug into his flesh every day. They oozed and bled.

After being freed, tears of joy actually rolled down Raju’s face.

“The team were astounded to see tears roll down his face during the rescue. It was so incredibly emotional for all of us. We knew in our hearts he realized he was being freed.”

The elephant was emaciated and in terrible condition.

He was sedated and then transported to the Elephant Conservation and Care Centre at Mathura.

His open-air ride was one of his first tastes of true freedom.

Once at the center, Raju was given a bath and emergency medical attention.

He was fed and loved…

The long and difficult rescue was emotional for Raju, but also for his saviors.

Now, he’ll live out his days being happy, free from pain and suffering.

The heroes at Wildlife SOS saved Raju from decades of torture. He will finally know freedom and days without pain and torture. It’s incredible that he was able to survive this long and endure such abuse.

But the water was too high for the little one.

Animals are much smarter than most people give them credit for. When disaster struck within this herd of elephants, they didn’t act helpless. Instead, the adults elephants proved just how intelligent and caring they are.
A tiny elephant calf attempted to cross the swollen Ewaso Nyiro in Kenya, but it proved to be too much for the little guy. The youngster was submerged in the swift current, but thanks to some quick thinking of his mom, wasn’t swept downstream.

The little calf thought it would be okay to cross…

He was caught up in the current almost immediately.

To see mom’s heroics in action, watch the video below. It’s hard to believe that these magnificent creatures are this intelligent. Absolutely amazing.

The elephants manage to save the lucky youngster and the herd continue on their way after crossing the river

It’s about time more people realize that animals have thoughts and feelings, too. This video proves that this elephant mother definitely does. She was horrified to see her baby in trouble and would do anything to save him. Share her awesome save with others!
