Without sleep: 11 days.
In 1965, then 17-year-old Randy Gardner set the world record by staying awake for 264.4 hours, or 11 days and 24 minutes.
Why you shouldn’t try this at home: Sleep is essential for building memory and skills as well as feeling more alert the next day.

Without breathing: 22 minutes.
The longest any human ever went without breathing took place in 2012, when Danish free diver Stig Severinsen held his breath underwater for 22 minutes.
Why you shouldn’t try this at home: Without oxygen, the human brain will die after about four minutes. Severinsen cheated death by breathing in pure oxygen for about 19 minutes beforehand, which saturated his body so it could continue to keep his brain functioning while he was underwater.

Without food and water: 18 days.
In 1979, Andreas Mihavecz — then 18 — was left, forgotten, in a basement prison cell until he was accidentally discovered 18 days later. This was not a stunt, but an act of negligence on the authorities’ part. It took Mihavecz several weeks to recover.
Why you shouldn’t try this at home: Of the two, water is more critical to replenish than food. An adult is made up of about 60% water, using it to lubricate joints, flush waste, and regulate body temperature.

Without gravity: 437.7 days.
Admittedly, floating in space looks like great fun, but not for 437.7 days, which is the world record for the longest single spaceflight set by Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polyakov in 1995.
Why you shouldn’t try this: The human body is built to function under Earth’s gravity. Without it, astronauts’ muscles, including those in the heart, lose mass and strength.

Without sunlight: Years.
A popular stunt for daredevils is to be buried alive. In 2004, Czech magician Zdenek Zahradka set the world record after spending 10 days in a coffin underground, where he had a tube for breathing but no sunlight, food, or water.
But the world record for living the longest without sunlight might actually go to a child. In 2012, Russian police uncovered a cult living underground in the Republic of Tatarstan, where many of the children cult members had reportedly never seen the sun.
Why you shouldn’t try this: Sunlight is an important source of vitamin D, which helps the body absorb calcium for bone health. It also triggers the release of serotonin, which regulates sleep, mood, and appetite.

When you think of horseshoe crabs, you don’t usually think of medical breakthroughs. For many of us, horseshoe crabs are just those scary looking things on the beach that we try and stay away from. However, over the last several years, medical scientists have been purposely harvesting horseshoe crabs for their blood, and for a good reason, too.

The first thing you notice about horseshoe crab blood is that it’s a pale shade of blue. This color comes from the copper-based hemocyanin that the crabs use to transport oxygen through their blood. In contrast, mammals use iron-based hemoglobin for the same purpose.

What makes horseshoe crab blood so valuable is its unique anti-bacterial qualities. Horseshoe crabs have been around for 450 million years. In that time, they managed to nearly perfect the art of disease fighting. When a horseshoe crab becomes infected with bacteria, the amebocytes in their blood (sort of like our white blood cells) surround and eradicate the infection at record speed.

For example, white blood cells in mammals can take up to two days to fight a bacterial infection. In horseshoe crabs, thanks to their amebocytes, it can take just 45 minutes. This makes horseshoe crab blood very desirable for medical equipment testing and vaccine research in humans. However, the only way to get horseshoe crab blood is to capture the crabs and bleed them dry in the lab.

With a going rate of $15k for a liter of horseshoe crab blood, the local crab population in many areas has been devastated. To combat that, researchers are now only taking one-third of the crabs’ blood, then releasing them back into the wild. While this has slowed the rate of decline, roughly 10 to 30 percent of crabs used don’t survive.

Never in a million years would I have guessed that horseshoe crabs could actually be used for medical research. It does seem pretty morbid to be catching all those crabs and then draining their blood, but for $15k a liter, I suppose it makes some sense.

Planet Earth is a large place and it keeps going thanks to many different species all working together. If most of Earth’s population went extinct tomorrow, these are the 6 animal species the human race would need to survive.

Doesn’t matter if your a dog person, cat person, fish friend or prefer the company of something a little more unique (like maybe a rhino?), there’s no doubt that animals make life better.

Next time you’re feeling grouchy about having to clean out your cat’s litter box, just remember all the times it knew you needed a nice fuzzy cuddle after a long day.

These photos prove that we need them just as much as they need us.

Anyone else planning a trip to the animal shelter right about now?

It ends with hyper-realistic art like this. If you didn’t know any better, you’d think this is just a picture of a couple together.

If someone were to tell me that the people in these pictures weren’t real, I’d laugh in their face. The truth of it is, though, they’re not. They are creations of a London artist named Ron Mueck, who specializes in sculptures. He used to be a model maker and puppeteer for television and films (for example, he created Ludo the gentle giant in Labyrinth). Now, he focuses on making hyper-realistic sculptures of humans that have museum visitors staring for hours…

How does he do it?

And to think, his process begins by him sculpting clay.

The most interesting thing about Ron’s work is that no matter how nonsensical or strange the dimensions or placement of the people are, they still look REAL.

Some of his art is very heartwarming.

But he doesn’t limit himself to that.

He will also create pieces that will shock people.

He isn’t known for doing interviews or making statements.

He just lets his art speak for itself.

The level of detail on the finished sculptures is hard to wrap one’s mind around.

He even created a likeness of himself as an oversized mask.

This is Mueck at work.

He was behind Ludo the ‘Gentle Giant’ on the 1986 film Labyrinth.

It would be impossible to not reach out and touch these sculptures if you saw them in person. If you were impressed by Mueck’s work, share this article.

A car riddled with bullet holes (1942).

For as long as there have been humans, there has been war, crime and strife. As humans, we are imperfect and sometimes our base nature takes over. It’s just hard to believe our ancestors or grandparents would be capable of such things.
What you see below are photos that were created from negatives stored at the City Records Center in downtown Los Angeles. These are records of crimes that are decades old (the archives date back to 1925). Merrick Morton, an LA-based photographer and LAPD reserve officer discovered the archive in 2001. His new exhibit displays some of the old crime scene photos… and they will give you chills.

Grisly murders aren’t a modern discovery. This one dates back to 1934.

A man who died a violent death (1950).

Police officers re-enact a crime (1963).

Tellers were handed this demand note (1961).

A detective discovers a victim in the brush (1942).

The victim of a shooting in the Wilshire district of LA (1950).

Bullet holes visible in a screen door (1930).

The victim of abuse shows her wounds (1950).

This man committed suicide (1950).

Another short demand note (1965).

The body of a man in the police morgue (1945).

The sad scene of a carbon monoxide poisoning (1950).

This chalk outline details the deceased and his position (1950).

A “kidnapping perpetrator” (1950).

Although film noir movies romanticize crime during these time periods, the photos in Morton’s gallery show that the crimes were always grisly tragedies. When people ask “What is the world coming to?” and reference modern crime, show them these pictures. Life has never been truly perfect.

This is Moses’ adopted “mother,” Jenny.

He sleeps with her.

Moses likes playing in the dust.

He also likes nuzzling his trunk.

In this picture, Moses is waiting at his feeding spot to eat.

Eat up, Moses!

Moses has already made a bunch of new friends.

He’s also very curious. In this picture, he’s inspecting a soda can.
