Despite being largely disregarded during his life, history has been kind to Tesla and his groundbreaking creations. While we know about most of Tesla’s inventions, there are several rumored devices of his that were lost to the passage of time. These inventions could have changed the world.

1. Death Ray: The most famous of Tesla’s so-called lost inventions was his “death ray.” In the 1930s, Tesla claimed that he had invented a machine that was capable of firing focused power beams that could destroy anything within 200 miles. He also claimed that his device could create a “power wall” to defend against any incoming objects. Though the machine was never created, that didn’t stop Tesla’s rivals from trying to steal the design. The final configuration of the death ray has been lost to history (and that’s probably a good thing).

2. The Oscillator: In 1898, Tesla created a small oscillating device that he decided to attach to the wall of his office. When he turned it on, the device almost shook down the entire building. After turning it off, Tesla destroyed the device and the blueprints that he used to create it. He told his staff not to mention the true cause of the tremors to anyone.

3. Free Electricity System: Around the turn of the century, Tesla received funding from J.P. Morgan to build a giant transmitting tower on Long Island. Morgan’s idea was that the tower would be used to send wireless messages around the world. However, Tesla planned to use the tower to wirelessly transmit free electricity all over the globe. Once Morgan learned of Tesla’s plans, he shut the project down. Free electricity would’ve seriously hurt his profit margins.

4. The Flying Saucer: In 1911, it was reported that Tesla was working on a flying machine. Here’s how he described the project to one newspaper: “My flying machine will have neither wings nor propellers. You might see it on the ground and you would never guess that it was a flying machine. Yet it will be able to move at will through the air in any direction with perfect safety, regardless of weather and oblivious to holes in the air or downward currents. It can remain absolutely stationary in the air, even in wind, for a great length of time. Its lifting power will not depend upon any such delicate devices as the bird has to employ, but upon positive mechanical action.” Sounds an awful lot like a UFO, doesn’t it?

5. Improved Airships: At a time when modern air travel was only a pipe dream, Tesla proposed using electric airships high in the Earth’s atmosphere to transport people across the Atlantic Ocean. He also proposed that the airships would be able to get their power from the sun and atmosphere.

Sadly, Tesla died alone and penniless in a tiny apartment in 1943. After his death, it was rumored that the FBI broke into his lab and stole all of his research. This might explain why we’re seeing more and more inventions these days that are obviously influenced by Nikola Tesla’s work.

The good thing about kids is that they have big imaginations. Sometimes those big imaginations manage to create some of humanity’s best inventions.

1916: Sleeping Porch. This was a proposed solution to the ever-growing city population problem. Made of iron and able to withstand 500 lbs, it does seem pretty sturdy…but does anyone else have “Rock-a Bye Baby” in their head right now?

This post will make you very happy that you weren’t a baby during this time period.

1917: Self-Operated Cradle. Taking care of a newborn is exhausting work and after hours of non-stop crying, you start looking for outside help. That’s exactly what happened to inventor Sheldon D. Vanderburgh who used a clock-spring motor to create this hammock for his new baby.

1917: Baby Holder. This invention was inspired by late night train rides where passengers were frequently plagued by crying babies. The inventor, however, didn’t quite follow instructions and it did little to muffle the sound.

1920: Motor-Driven Cradle. No one seems to have the time to rock their child to sleep, so another proposed invention rose up with the added bonus of “entertainment” for your child when they woke up.

1934: Black Light Baby. After the Lindbergh baby kidnapping shocked the world, inventors sought a way to keep children safe with this product. However, parents weren’t all that comfortable with that much machinery under their child’s bed.

1938: Baby Bicycle Seat. Take half a pram and slap it on a bicycle. Voila! A wonderful way to get exercise and air out your baby at the same time.

1938: Baby Gas Mask. The threat of possible air warfare in Europe led French inventors to propose this solution for keeping babies safe.

1938: UV Lamp Brands. Hospitals would be able to use this to mark newborn babies with their initials in order to avoid any switched-at-birth scandals.

1939: Baby Gas Mask Upgrade. A month away from Germany’s invasion on Poland, this upgrade still allows for whoever is holding the infant to control the airflow but with a little more comfort for the kiddo.

1939: Baby Walker. If guiding your child by hand on how to take their first steps feels a little too lovely-dovey for you, this invention could have been the solution. Not only are the child’s legs strapped in sync with your own, but a harness and leash allows you to keep them upright…From a distance.

1939: Safety Belt. This could be helpful for single mothers dealing with what to do when the phone rings, your other child cries and someone knocks at the door while you’re in the middle of bath time with the little one. Just strap ‘em in and go about your business.
