Oh man.

In every country, society’s views on social issues change over the years. In the United States, a woman’s role in the community has evolved over the past century.
At one point, women were treated as objects. They weren’t given proper rights, they were the butt of jokes and they were outright disrespected. It’s hard to believe, but the ads you see below were actually used in publications. Most people didn’t have an issue with them.

Oh no they didn’t.

I know this is wordplay, but beating your wife is fun?

There you go, ladies. Decide on the furniture.

SIGH.

Priorities? Not so much.

Because women totally do that.

Women: getting promoted for getting good coffee.

This was almost funny, for a second.

So this was okay to print?

Uh-huh.

For a second, I thought this was going to be inspirational.

I don’t get the connection.

We get it, women are objects to you.

Chauvinism is less rampant in many countries now, thankfully. It’s just hard to believe such blatant sexism was okay to advertise… although now, there are totally different issues that women and young girls have to deal with.

Don’t be familiar.

This cringe worthy and ridiculously outdated dating guide was published by Parade Magazine back in 1938, to inform all the single ladies of the era on what to do and what not do on a first date with a gentleman.

What makes this guide so sexist is not really the tips themselves. They are just a mixture of common sense and politeness for everyone (for the most part)…it’s just that they are all phrased in an extremely sexist way. Honestly, as the tips go, I think we’ve all seen much worse in Cosmo.

Don’t be sentimental.

Don’t use the car mirror.

Don’t sit in awkward positions.

Do your dressing.

Men don’t like…

Don’t be careless.

Wear a brassiere.

Seriously, don’t be familiar.

Don’t talk about clothes.

Don’t be conspicuous.

Don’t drink too much

Else this will happen.

That last one, “Don’t pass out drunk at dinner” is pretty good advice for almost any outing, during any time period.
