When 26-year-old systems engineer Mike Hudson got tired of living a less-than-exciting life in the United Kingdom, he decided to seriously mix things up. He bought a van, converted it into an apartment, began traveling around Europe, and started a website, Van Dog Traveller, to document his journeys. Hudson refurbished the whole thing to make it any road tripper’s dream.

Never fear! These easy DIY tips will help you restore your apartment or all of its former glory (or at least to the state it was in before you got there). They’re all relatively inexpensive and you can use items you have around the house.

Clear clogged drains by pouring baking soda down your drain, followed by vinegar and hot water.

Wrap a wide rubber band around doorknobs to soften a door that slams (and reduce noise complaints).

Make late-night entrances much less annoying.

Use coarse salt to clean any cast iron skillets that came with your furnished apartment.

A broom and a hose can help you clean off your dirty deck.

Remove a stripped screw by using a rubber band and some elbow grease.

Did you think you wrecked your linoleum?

Freshen up the place without using a ton of aerosol sprays.

Are the couch’s pillows looking flat?

Use WD-40 to: silence squeaky doors, lubricate stuck windows and remove crayon marks from walls.

She always wanted a backyard, so her roommate surprised her with one. The cat was not impressed

Some might think that the outdoor deck in your apartment is just a waste of space. After all, you’re never out there, and it takes up space you’d love to add to your bedroom. But have you ever actually thought of how you could put it to better use? Well this Portlandian was inspired one day after complaining about Big City livin’ and the result is awesome-sauce. Check it out:

First she lined the balcony with a tarp for easy cleanup, then she spread some soil.

She then put a small fence to stop that lovely cat from trying to climb through the bars.

She rolled out the sod and gave it some water and they lined up some extra plants.

And of course, a chair was added, i.e., relax station.

Project complete!

2 months later, lawn is still going great, with only one small dead spot where everyone stands the most.

According to them, they let the grass grow without interruption.

Unless it gets to be too much, and only then do they break out scissors.

Add in a few lights, and you’ve got a great place to chillaxe.

How cool is that? Well I know what my weekend project is going to be. Toughest part now is getting MY roommate to agree

Skyhouse was created in a NYC apartment space.

Most modern apartment design focuses on minimalism, fancy art, luxurious amenities and costing more than any living space ever should. Although the price is still probably outrageous, architect David Hotson found a way to mix in some whimsy into modern design. This is Skyhouse.
What makes Skyhouse unique isn’t its location or Feng Shui (although both are impressive). It’s the slide inside that pulls it all together.

It is in a previously unoccupied penthouse.

The interior design is gorgeous.

It’s minimalistic…

But also filled with eye-popping color and art.

It’s an impressive house.

But mainly because of the slide.

Instead of taking stairs to get around this massive apartment, you take the slide.

The tunnel starts at the roof…

And it runs all the way to the ground floor.

This fun pad is located in the middle of NYC, in one of the earliest surviving skyscrapers.

Skyhouse’s design mixes fun in with modern ideas. There’s a rock wall, a swing…

The slide isn’t the only awesome part of this apartment.

Living in here would be a child’s dream.

It’s at the summit of the skyscraper.

Making this a rooftop playground.

Every day would be fun if you lived here.

The price of living in a space like this is probably obscene, so just let Skyhouse be an inspiration to you in your future building and design endeavors. “Fancy” shouldn’t mean “devoid of fun.” Even nice apartments can have a few pieces of playground equipment stuck inside… and they are still incredible. This apartment is to die for, share it with your friends!
