The Palingenia longicauda, (also known as the long-tailed mayfly or the Tisza mayfly to locals) have a strange life cycle allowing them to live underground in the larvae state for 3 years of their lives. The only time they surface is as an adult, mating and plaguing the surrounding Hungary towns with a dense cloud of insect orgies.

After fully maturing, the male Tisza mayflies emerge from the mud below the river ready to mate. They only have about 3 hours to do so before they die.

Due to synchronized hatching, the mayflies all emerge at once, in one big cloud of bodies and pheromones.

The insects are so desperate to get it on that one female may have up to 20 males going after her at one time.

The air gets so thick with the insects that it almost looks like snow. Indeed, when the mating is over, snow plows have to come to clear the streets.

The Tisza River is now the only place in the world where you can see long-tailed mayflies, though they once used to flourish throughout Europe.

These pictures may make it look like something Moses conjured to punish the Egyptians, but most Europeans who witness the blooming of the Tisza River say the event is actually quite beautiful. In fact, efforts have been made to reestablish mayfly eggs to certain European rivers to blossom the return of new Tisza mayfly colonies. I wish them good luck on that effort, and to not start any similar effort in the States!

Below are a few creepy gifs of animals molting. This process might be even creepier than the creatures themselves. Can you stomach it?

Spider crab in a spider crab suit.

This guy looks like he had trouble with his zipper.

It almost looks like his ghost is leaving his body. What’s with the color?

Extreme Makeover: Scorpion Edition.

This cicada is having an out-of-body experience.

How does the skin just stay there like that?

This looks like something out of Alien.

Did this caterpillar just poop out another caterpillar?

Oh, don’t worry. This isn’t a creepy snake. It’s actually secretly an even creepier snake.

These are creepy, sure, but wouldn’t it be kind of cool if we did this? Do you think anyone would tell if I shed my exoskeleton in a meeting and left for an hour?

Trimming the hedges is a fairly mundane chore that unfortunately has to be done. It sure is tedious, but you knew what you were getting into when you acquired a property with hedges.

Unfortunately, one man’s hedge trimming experience got a dose of excitement, and not in the good way. Imagine you are trimming your hedges and all of a sudden, you see a horrifying nest of awful insects.

Doodle dee dee, nothing to see here…

Wait a second. What’s that up there?

Is that?

Holy MOTHER OF GOD!

A GIANT BEE SWARM!

I hope this person made it out alive and is not allergic to bees. If I saw that, I’d have a big brown stain in my pants, as I would instantly pass out and fall in the dirt.

What did you think I meant? Oh, you’re gross.
