Dale, 34, has been carrying the idea of proposing to Karlie, 29, under the Aurora Borealis for five years. “I hadn’t heard or seen anyone do it before, and I wanted to do something different from everybody else,” he said. That place was also special for both of them because the couple visited it about 30 times. “We both love chasing the Northern Lights and photographing them together, so it seemed pretty fitting.”

His first plan didn’t work out because Dale hid the ring inside a moisturizer bottle, but when their luggage was overweight on a flight from the Faroe Islands to Iceland, Karlie threw the moisturizer – with a $4,000 ring hidden inside – into a trash can. “I didn’t know until a week after when we were in Iceland and I was looking everywhere for the ring,” Dale said.

The man saved up money for a new ring and the couple later booked a two-month work trip through Iceland, Norway, and Finland. He wanted to ask the big question seven years to the day they first started dating, but the Northern Lights seemed to him too beautiful to wait. “It was the most amazing display of color in the Aurora that we’ve ever seen.”

He staged the scene in a way that made Karlie believe they were taking a selfie. When everything was ready, Dale got down on one knee in front of the breathtaking Aurora’s greens and blues, and removed the ring out of the couple’s medical pack. Karlie said yes, and the selfie turned out to be both beautiful and romantic as hell.

When Karlie and her photographer boyfriend Dale travelled to Scandinavia to see the Northern Lights she did not suspect it would end in a huge surprise

The couple loves to travel all over the world, but the Arctic Circle is their favorite place – they visited it about 30 times

“We both love chasing the Northern Lights and photographing them together, so it seemed pretty fitting,” 34-year-old Dale said

His first attempt was unsuccessful because Karlie (unknowingly) threw away the $4,000 engagement ring he was hiding inside a bottle

“I didn’t know until a week after when we were in Iceland”

Dale saved money for another ring and booked another trip to the Northern Lights through Iceland, Norway, and Finland

He staged the scene in a way that made Karlie believe they were taking a selfie. Then, Dale got down on one knee and took out the ring

Karlie said yes and the moment was captured perfectly in the decoy selfie that turned out to be breathtaking

Congrats to the happy couple on their magical engagement!

Millions of views overnight. I started Off Leash Studio. I’ve been shooting for just over a year now and I’ve never had more fun in my life. I was once attacked by 8 one-month-old puppies. Life can’t get any better.

But the  freelance photographer from Jersey City got more than he bargained for when he capturthe beams of light towering into the sky last week.

At the top of the beams appears to be a silhouette of an angel, though the photographer himself said it bears a striking resemblance to Jesus.

The picture was shared on social media, and many users have taken it to mean a symbolic religious sign.

Norma Cheryda Aguila-Valdaliso wrote: ‘Oh my God. God is great. God is good.

‘This has left me with so much faith – God is watching over us always.

Yvette Cid, whose children were victims of the 9/11 attacks which claimed 2,996 people, was overwhelmed by the picture.

She said: ‘That’s an awesome pic wow I lost my two boys and I believe this is a sign to all that have lost a love one.’

Nancy Diaz shared the view that someone was looking down upon New York, and Heléna Padgett said: ‘The Lord is with us and this is just another reminder. It’s beautiful.’

Unless you’re a photography buff, you probably have no idea what the people behind some of the most famous photos in the world actuall look like. US photographer Tim Mantoani, however, aims to fix all that with his epic “Behind Photographs” series.

Steve McCurry – Girl In Afghanistan
Steve McCurry: Peshawar, Pakistan 1984. I looked for this girl for 17 years and finally found her in 2002. Her name is Sharbat Gula.

Jeff Widener – Beijing 1989

Harry Benson – The Beatles
Harry Benson: Brian Epstein – Beatles Manager – had just told them they were number one in America – and I was coming with them to New York. 1964

Lyle Owerko – 9/11
Lyle Owerko: No one knew such beautiful warm day would serve as the backdrop to one of the most painful and confusing events to the heart of mankind. This picture is one small part of such a huge event that ties the threads of thousands of stories and millions of people together. Written words will never convey the whole scope of the event, nor summarize the sounds, the smells or even voices that are frozen in my memory bank from that day. I did the best job I could in photographing the 9/11 so that future generations would have the idea of the scope of what happened, to have the evidence how innocence can so easily be snatched away in a razor’s edged moment in time. My hope is that in time the wounds and pain will heal and that wisdom and peace will prevail among the darkness of this event, so that humanity could move forward into a time of grace and understanding.

Marry Ellen Mark – Ringmaster With Elephant
Marry Ellen Mark: I am holding my photograph of Ram Prakash Singh and his beloved elephant Shyama – taken in 1990. Ram Prakash Singh was the ringmaster of “The Great Golden Circus” – this photograph was done in Ahmedabad, India – This was part of my Indian Circus Project. I love India and I love the circus, so photographing eighteen circuses all around India was an incredible experience. Unfortunately Shyama died a few months after this photograph was taken – supposedly, he succumbed to poisoned chapatti – Ram Prakash Singh was heartbroken – me also.

Thomas Mangelsen – Brown bear
Thomas Mangelsen: Brown bear, Brooks Falls Katmai National Park, Alaska. July 1988. I pre-visualized this possibility (of an image like this) from watching documentary films about the bears at Katmai and seeing a photograph in Alaska Air Magazine of a group of bears here at the falls. At the time, I was on a flight to Anchorage working on a documentary film about Sandhill Cranes and had a week between shoots. I phoned the park headquarters from the airport in Achorage and asked about getting a campsite. They said they were all full – except for one site, that was near the bear trail and nobody wanted it. I told them I would take it. I spent a week on a small platform above the falls trying to captures this image. I would go most days before sunrise and stay until dark. During that time I shot 35 rolls of film of pretty much just head + shoulders of bears + sockeye salmon leaping the falls. Six weeks later I opened the yellow box to see this image. It was a nice surprise. I hadn’t known that I got it.

David Doubilet – Circle Of Barracuda
David Doubilet: Circle of Barracuda, New Ireland, Papua New Guinea. The school of chevron barracudas circled the diver three times and pow they were gone into a dark afternoon sea. The oceans of the world have no straight lines; geometry like a perfect circle is a rare thing, but these barracudas will do this as a defense. 70% of our planet is an ocean. It is a place of infinite hidden beauty. It is a place where light behaves in a very different manner. Global warming/ climate change is about water. Coral reefs where I have spent most of my life are very threatened now—not just from rising temperatures but from the change in ocean chemistry = This is a world where my partner Jennifer Hayes and I go into. It is most of our planet. A world without corners that may be gone by the end of the century.

May Pang – John Lennon
May Pang: Summer 1974 Long Island Sound NY. A relaxing time with his son Julian. I called this photo “Family Portrait”

Meil Leifer – Ali vs. Liston
Neil Leifer: Ali vs. Liston – May 25, 1965, Lewiston, Mayne

Bob Gruen – John Lennon
Bob Gruen: John Lennon asked me to come to his pentouse apt. on the east side of New York to take pictures for the cover of his ‘Walls + Bridges’ album. After we took a series of portraits for the record cover we took some informal shots to use for publicity. I asked him if he still had the New York City t-shirt I had given him a year earlier and he went a put it on and we made this photo.

Elliott Erwitt – Two Dogs With Owner
Elliott Erwitt: The picture I am holding was snapped in 1974 just across the street from my apartment in New York’s Central Park. It has been 38 years since that event and sadly I have lost track of the participants.

Lori Grinker – Mike Tyson
Lori Grinker: Mike Tyson – 1980, age 14. I began a project on young boxers when I was a student. The legendary Cus D’Amato told me Mike would be the next great heavy weight champion, he was right – and I continued on with him for nearly a decade. He was a trouble but sweet kid who veered off the good path he was led to with all that comes with being a celebrity in that world.

Nick Ut – Napalm Attack In Vietnam
Nick Ut: June 8, 1972 Trang Bang Village Kim Phuc 9 year-old girl South Vietnam drop napalm in her village.

Herman Leonard – Jazz Musicians
Herman Leonard: It was early 1948 at the Royal Roost in New York. An afternoon rehearsal gave me a unique opportunity to photograph many giants of jazz with my trusty 4×5 Speed Graphic. What a great career! To do what you love and be entertained at the same time!

Douglas Kirkland – Marilyn Monroe
Douglas Kirkland: This is from my Evening with Marilyn

Carl Fischer – Muhammad Ali
Carl Fischer: Muhammad Ali, New York, 1967

Photographer Haley Morris-Cafiero has long been aware of peoples’ cruelty towards her based on her size. Living in a society that’s obsessed with thinness, life can be hard for larger people, especially women. Morris-Cafiero, however, decided to turn this meanspirited habit into art, and hopefully make people more aware of their judgmental attitudes.

The project became a photo series called Wait Watchers, where Morris-Cafiero photographs herself in public settings, where people, who don’t realize they’re on camera, can be seen in the background laughing at her or giving her strange looks. And no, she’s not doing anything strange, nor is she very obvious about taking the photo. The photos are taken with a self-timing camera, and Morris-Cafiero, once the shot is set up, goes about a normal activity like talking on the phone or seeming to wait for someone. Behind her, you can usually see a passerby giving her the side-eye.

She began setting up cameras in public places, and then staging it to look like she just happened to be in the area. The photos capture not only Morris-Cafiero herself, but the reactions of the passerby. “I’m very interested in how society uses the gaze to communicate their emotion, then how we, in turn, interpret the way people look at us,” she explains. The Wait Watchers project turns the strangers’ gaze at Morris-Cafiero back on themselves, and, she hopes, make people aware of the issues of body image, shaming of larger people, which Morris-Cafiero has experienced first hand.

Her work as become somewhat viral online, and, since it’s the Internet, the feedback included some not-so-nice comments. People told Morris-Cafiero that “my life, and in some cases the world, would be better if I lost weight and got a makeover.” Morris-Cafiero brushes the nonsense off, though. “I don’t care what anybody thinks about my body and I’m perfectly fine with it.”

And you really can’t argue that her attitude is anything short of fantastic. “We all know that haters are going to be haters,” she says, directly to her audience in the Wait Watchers Kickstarter video, “but as I celebrate myself, I hope you learn to love and celebrate yourself as well.”

In the 1960’s, American photographer Arthur Tress’ interest shifted from documenting things as they were to creating more surreal images.

To do this, he enlisted the help of children, who would tell Tress about their worst nightmares. From listening to the kids’ bad dreams, he would get all of these truly bizarre and terrifying characters, themes, and symbols–the perfect fodder for the dark, disturbing pictures he was looking to take. Combining real life with the bone-chilling creations only a child’s mind could come up with, Tress’ photography will likely get your skin crawling in a way no other has before.
