Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel plowed his truck through a Bastille Day celebration in the southern French city of Nice in July 2016. Before doing so, he took a series of selfies with the deadly vehicle. 84 people were killed (10 were children) in the attack, as Lahouaiyej-Bouhlel drove a truck at top speed into crowds gathered to watch a fireworks display on the Promenade des Anglais seafront before he was shot dead. The newly discovered photos were apparently taken with his phone two days before he drove into the crowd. One shows him smiling in front of the truck in the company of another person. In the second selfie, the 31-year-old Tunisian flips off the camera while at the steering wheel, alongside another unidentified person

In 2014, a couple accused of murdering Memphis Pastor Don Smith not only allegedly stole his car — they took selfies inside of the vehicle. Roger Reed, Jr. and Lashonda Williams are seen smiling, smoking and even kissing in photos. The pastor was shot to death the day after Halloween 2014. His body was found floating in a pond, and his wallet and car were missing. The couple was arrested a few days later in Greenville, Mississippi after being pulled over in the stolen car. The couple is on trial as of this writing — Williams insists the whole incident centered around an arrangement for prostitution with the pastor. However, prosecutors believe the couple just wanted to steal the pastor’s car.

Amanda Taylor, 24, had been going through a tough time since the tragic suicide of her estranged husband, Rex. “Everything I did was for the right reasons. I stabbed my father-in-law to death because he destroyed my husband…” she posted on Instagram. “I wasn’t the perfect wife, but this was one last good thing I could do.” Amanda blamed Charles Taylor, 59, for her husband’s addiction issues. On March 27, and on their joint birthday in 2015, Amanda went to Rex’s graveside and tried to take her life. She survived and checked herself into the hospital. Despite her protests and objection from her mother, Amanda was released. A few days later, she visited Charles and stabbed her former father-in-law as he sat on the sofa. She made it happen at exactly 3.27 pm to symbolize the birthday she’d shared with Rex — 3/27. After the killing, she posted another status on Instagram alongside a picture of a news report alerting members of the public that she was on the run. She had also taken a selfie at the scene with the bloody knife and the body of Charles behind her. Amanda was arrested in North Carolina and has since been found guilty of murder in the first degree. She currently awaits sentencing.

A man, known only as Qin, killed his girlfriend Lin with a handsaw, then took a selfie with her body. He then published it on a Chinese social networking site, with the caption, “Please forgive me for my selfish love.” The image was shared by Qin’s friends and went viral, leading the police right to the murderer. Officers then recovered the murder weapon at Qin’s home.

Pennsylvania teen murderer Maxwell Marion Morton sent a Snapchat selfie of himself with the corpse to his victim’s mother. The incriminating photo showed Morton and his 16-year-old victim Ryan Mangan. The boys attended Jeannette High School in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Mangan was found dead by his mother after being shot in the face with a 9mm handgun, according to authorities. She also received text messages reading, “Told you I cleaned up the shells,” and “Ryan was not the last one.” The messages and the selfie lead police to Morton, who then found a handgun in his home. He’s been charged with first-degree homicide as an adult, as well as possession of a firearm by a minor.

Stephanie Hernandez, 21, moved into a new house with boyfriend Rafael Gonzalez, 20, in 2015. Together they did what most young couples would do — post pictures to Snapchat while hanging out in the new place. Their photos, however, featured Gonzalez’s gun, and, in at least one instance, the firearm was pointed right at Hernandez. Just a few hours after posting the pictures, the mother of two was dead. Hernandez’s friend and former roommate, Jaquinlan Davis, later said that he was so concerned about Gonzalez’s short fuse that he considered convincing Hernandez to leave him. Gonzalez pleaded not guilty to the murder of his girlfriend and is currently awaiting trial.

Kirsty Edmondson, 23, and Christopher Sawyers, 35, took “trophy photos” and had sex with each other in victim Kenneth Chapman’s bed while living with his corpse for a week. Police were called in after concerns about Chapman’s welfare and found him dead at his flat in Eccles, Greater Manchester, with tests showing he had been injected with a lethal dose of heroin. “Look at this. I will show you a photo of a corpse,” Sawyer told friends. In another bragging outburst he declared, “I’m a serial killer now.” The selfies were given as evidence during Sawyers’ criminal trial. He was convicted of murder and manslaughter and jailed for life with a minimum recommendation he serve 33 years. Kristy was found not guilty of murder, but was sentenced to three years after she admitted to two charges of theft and nine of fraud.

In 2013, British serial killer Joanna Dennehy took a series of selfies before killing her fourth and fifth victims in a bloodlust frenzy. In the photos presented during her trial, Dennehy is seen stretching out her pierced tongue in selfies taken only minutes before she selected her next two victims in Hereford, just east of Wales. The photos were among several shown to a jury in the trial of two of her accused accomplices, Gary Stretch and Leslie Layton, who allegedly aided in covering up her murders. Dennehy pleaded guilty to the triple murder of three men who were stabbed in the chest before their bodies were recovered days later in a Cambridgeshire ditch. Dennehy is currently serving a life sentence in Bronzefield Prison, Surrey.

This shocking dashcam video captured the moment a passenger plane crashed into a bridge and plunged into a river in the Taiwanese capital of Taipei on Wednesday morning.

Fifty-eight people were aboard TransAsia Airways Flight GE235 when it veered out of control as it flew to Kinmen, off the coast of the Chinese province of Xiamen. Rescuers were quick to arrive at the scene and scrambled to pull survivors from the submerged wreck of the ATR 72 twin-engine turboprop aircraft. So far, 31 have been confirmed dead, 15 injured (including two in a taxi that the plane hit on the bridge), and 12 are still missing.

The search and rescue effort continues.

The Shanghai Baby: The Second Sino-Japanese War from 1937 eventually meshed with World War II. During one bombing raid, the Japanese bombed a Chinese train station that housed women and children. This baby somehow survived, although injured.

The majority of archeologists estimate that modern humans have been on the Earth for about 200,000 years. For the past few hundred centuries, modern civilization has seen countless tragedies and atrocities. It’s hard to imagine just what horrors people had to experience in their lives… until we developed the technology to record images and video. Now we know about some of terrible things have happened, all over the world (and are still happening). These shocking photos show us just how awful things have been for people. It doesn’t matter their age, creed, race or religion… this will make you feel.

The Spanish Flu Outbreak: The Spanish Flu of 1918 killed approximately 100 million people worldwide. This photo, although seemingly “normal,” shows just how frightened people were of the illness. They attempted to live their daily lives… but with serious precautions.

The Atlantic Slave Trade: This photo was taken aboard a British vessel, the HMS Daphne (11/01/1868). These child slaves had just been rescued from the trade.

Crying Boy Soldier: This 16 year-old boy is Hans-Georg Henke, a member of the Hitler Youth. This was taken the day before Germany’s surrender; he was overcome with desperation and fear.

A Berlin Wall Rescue: This German soldier from the East knew he shouldn’t let this child across the Berlin Wall, but he was separated from his parents. So, the guard lifts him across the barbed wire anyway, on the lookout for anyone who may catch him.

William Saunders’s Photographs: This British photographer went to China and staged the above image of a fake beheading… encouraging the military to takeover China and “civilize” its people.

 Starving Mongolian Woman: This was published in National Geographic in 1913 by Stefan Passe. Mongolia was newly independent. A common punishment for criminals was being placed in a box like this in public… possibly until starvation.

The Holodomor: This Ukranian famine was one of the worst in history. It was a manmade event and recognized as a genocide of millions (comparable to the Holocaust). This is Kharkiv in 1933. Corpses lie in the street, while passers by just go about their day.

A Concentration Camp Mass Grave: The Nazis killed 50,000 people at the Bergen-Belsen camp before it was liberated in 1945 (Anne Frank was among those slaughtered). “Mass Grave 3” shows camp doctor Fritz Klein standing among the dead. He decided if prisoners should be sent to the gas chamber because they were unfit to work. He was later hanged for his atrocities.

The Nagasaki Brothers: Shortly after the bombing of the city, this photo was taken. The younger child in the picture is dead and the older boy is his brother. He carried his brother to a crematorium, watching him burn but refusing to cry. He had just lost everything in the world, but still focused on honoring his fallen (and equally innocent) younger brother.

It’s difficult to look at the world the same way after seeing these… isn’t it? Share these photos with others. More people should realize some of the things that have happened in the world (and how terrible they were).

Tuvalu: Tuvalu is a series of tiny islands in the South Pacific. It’s the fourth-smallest country on Earth, and also one of the lowest. It’s just a few inches above sea level and a rise in water levels could spell disaster.

Each of these spectacular places on Earth are slowly disappearing, due to both climate and political changes. Sometimes, the success and popularity of a destination can lead to its ruination (or at least the dilution of the natural culture). Check out these wonderful 20 places … before it’s too late.

Boeng Yak Loum, Cambodia: This round crater lake in the jungle of northeastern Cambodia is considered sacred by locals. Visitors pay an entry fee of less than a dollar. Unfortunately, the local government is considering seizing the lake and building hotels around it.

 Panajachel, Guatemala: Once a home for bohemians, but the Guatemalan armed conflict created by drug trafficking is changing that. Ex-pats are being harassed and it might not be the safe place it once was.

Damascus, Syria: The Syrian Civil War has ravaged Damascus, with some of the fighting happening in the Old City. It’s too early to tell, but many of the historical mosques have probably been badly damaged.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia: The reef stretches over 1,200 miles off the coast of Queensland, Australia. It is also the only living organism that can be seen from space. The reef has lost more than half of its coral since the 80s. In 2013, the Australian government authorized the construction of a new port that would result in 3 million cubic meters of seabed being dredged.

Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania: Over the past 150 years, Kilimanjaro’s ice fields have been shrinking. Only 10% of the original snow remains and it could disappear completely in the next decade.

Ujung Kulon National Park, Indonesia: This is the last refuge of the Java rhinoceros, the most endangered animal in the world. Poachers have driven its population down to only 40 individuals.

Seaflower Biosphere Reserve: This reserve is one of the most isolated ecosystems in the Caribbean. There is low human impact and it is a UNESCO Marine Reserve, protecting Seaflower from economic exploitation. In 2013, international courts gave Nicaragua half of Seaflower’s area. In the future, there could be oil drilling.

Lake Nicaragua: This lake has the only population of freshwater sharks in the world. Recently, the government has approved the Nicaragua Canal, which will link the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Environmentalists have warned of the canal’s irreversible effects on the local environment.

Yasuni National Park, Ecuador: The park is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon and is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. It is home to more than 4,000 plant species, 170 mammal species, and 610 bird species. It’s also home to the Waorani people. In 2013, Ecuador approved the economic exploitation of the Yasuni.

South Aral Sea, Uzbekistan: 30 years ago, this sea was the fourth-largest lake in the world. Now, Aral is 10% of its original size. The Aral is divided between the North and South Aral Seas and it is being exploited for the oil and gas in the seabeds.

Darien Gap: This gap is a dense jungle between Panama and Colombia. It’s the only section of the Americas not traversed by the Panamerican Highway. It is truly isolated, but when highways are built, that’ll change.

Vientiane, Laos: Vientiane is the Laotian capital city. China and Vietnam are in an economic dispute for the contracts that will bring Vientiane into the 21st century. The city will soon see an economic boom.

Yangon, Myanmar: Yangon is the former capital and biggest city of Myanmar. For years, there was a travel boycott, but it was lifted in 2012. Now, the city is open to the West and has been transforming.

Somaliland: This is breakaway state from Somalia, unrecognized by any other nation. Somaliland is a stable and democratic state, although not a nation yet, has welcomed a Coca Cola plant.

Havana, Cuba: It’s the largest city in the Caribbean, filled with colonial-era buildings and cars from the 1950s. The country looks to embrace foreign investment and Havana should experience some dramatic changes.

Lake Chad: This lake spreads between Chad, Niger, Nigeria, and Cameroon. It’s drying up fast, but no one knows why. Lake Chad has lost 90% of its water in the last 50 years.

Nuuk, Greenland: This is the capital of Greenland, the largest island in the world. There are only 15,000 people now, but when Greenland gains independence from Denmark, it will tap into the ores all over the island. Then, thousands of mining workers will flood in.

Sapa, Vietnam: This is a remote town in the mountains of northern Vietnam. This once-small, secluded place is now among Vietnam’s biggest tourist destinations, diluting what originally made it special.

Bagan, Myanmar: This is a colossal complex which encompasses more than 2,200 temples and ruins. The number of tourists visiting the temples has recently been expanding. You used to be able to have a temple to yourself, now it’ll be different.
