1997’s “Spice World” introduced an entirely new side of the Spice Girls to the world. Once and for all, the Spice Girls proved that “they don’t just sing.”

Though it’s nearly impossible to pick one stand-out star from “Spice World”, Geri must be commended for her role as “Geri.”

Her natural ability to capture our attention was prevalent throughout the 93-minute opus.

That microphone probably didn’t work… but she made you believe it did.

Baby Spice is equally astonishing.

Her character, which technically wasn’t even a character because she just played herself, questioned social norms.

Which was way ahead of its time. This is 1997 we’re talking about!

Baby Spice also managed to deliver her lines while constantly sucking on a lollipop. Lord knows we don’t see that nowadays.

Then there was Scary. A natural talent, her faces really make you believe what she’s saying.

And Posh!

 For example:

The scene where she drives the bus the wheel has been described as very “real.”

And one cannot forget about the iconic, unforgettable bootcamp scene.

But, Posh is at her best when she wakes a little boy from a coma.

 With 4 words, she shaped a generation:

Oh yeah, Sporty was good too.

All together, it was quite obvious how hard the Spice Girls worked to create this film.

 The 5 girls shined on screen.

The set design, as demonstrated by this random Spice Gazebo in France, was unparalleled for 1997.

AND THERE WAS A SWING ON A BUS.

The dialogue was also incredibly clever and sharp.

One-liners like this one still stand the test of time. In 2013, “No more Mr. Nice Spice” holds up splendidly.

The film also advanced race relations. A truly “cross-cultural” moment of the film happens when the girls encounter aliens.

While some considered this scene “gross”, “crude”, and “over the top.”

Music legend, Elton John, even took time out of his busy schedule to appear in the film.

And the bus driver was Meatloaf.

The wardrobe also needs to be applauded.

Who else besides Scary Spice was wearing mini braids and space suits at the time? No one. That’s because it was revolutionary.

Their creepy manager’s facial hair is just disgusting enough to really make you believe he was a true creep.

 One of the film’s most impressive scenes happens when each of the Spice Girls parody each other.

The film also tackled the difficult subject of motherhood.

And also manta rays.

And the Pope.

 You can’t talk about “Spice World” without talking about the film’s haunting, unforgettable score.

Lastly, the special effects.

In some bizarre homage to how London gets “started” every morning, a woman wore a dress made of newspaper, swinging newspaper bags…

…and newspaper-clad dudes used newspaper jackhammers. Allegory for the necessity of print? Desperate plea for help? We’ll never know!

A car exploded…

…and Batman climbed out.

Reference to something inherently British and inscrutable? Possibly! Either way, that’s definitely not Christian Bale.

No big deal, just a guy wearing a fez and a Union-Jack kilt descending from the sky with a saxophone.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Pet Shop Boys. God, I have to sleep at night after seeing this, somehow.

Coolest delegation at the Olympics goes to the Ethiopians.

 This dude was just wandering through the athletes. Beer? Beer. Beer!

Leave it to a French guy to show off.

The Irish athletes know what’s up. They just competed for two-and-a-half weeks! Why should they be dancing to One Direction!

Ugh, and then people started building a pyramid.

 This was part of a nice little tribute to John Lennon, BUT: dressing a bunch of kids up in all-white “Imagine” shirts…

Annie Lennox’s set was pretty cool, but damn was it also scary.

Speaking of scary: the most inscrutable thing about British culture, to me, is how it didn’t filter out Russell Brand before he became inexplicably famous.

He pretended to be Willy Wonka, and then transitioned into lip-syncing “I Am The Walrus” through a megaphone. I remember this canto from Dante.

Here she is, performing easily the worst air-guitar I’ve ever seen attempted by a coherent human being.

Alongside her was Brian May, guitarist from Queen, rocking a haircut that looked like the glam-rock bastardization of a colonial powdered wig.

Eric Idle of Monty Python fame fell out of a cannon…

…and then performed “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” with a bunch of roller-skating nuns in what was easily the most British thing that’s ever happened.

Boris Johnson waved the Olympic flag LIKE A BOSS.

Kate Moss was there, in a very awkward supermodel sequence stapled on to the Bowie tribute because FASHION. (Bowie wasn’t there.)

Liam Gallagher sang “Wonderwall,” the most famous song by his old, famous band Oasis, except without his brother Noel and with new act… Beady Eye. Yeah.

And last, but not least: the Spice Girls reunited for a fun performance that gave us this GIF. Long live Posh Spice.
