It looks like the epitome of an inhospitable climate, but this strange place was the site of the resurrection of an entire species.

First, some history: On nearby Lord Howe Island (about 13 miles away) lived a big, ungainly bug. It was a type of stick bug and could reach a size of 12 centimeters with its shiny black exoskeleton. European settlers named it the “tree lobster” because that’s what it looked like. It was harmless, if not very attractive.

In 1918, a ship ran aground on the island. The ship was eventually repaired, but not before some of its rats escaped. With no natural predators on the island and an abundance of delicious tree lobsters, the rats quickly settled in. In two years’ time, there were no tree lobsters left.

Or at least we thought so…

However, in 2001, two scientists, David Priddel and Nicholas Carlile, and their assistants decided to check out Ball’s Pyramid. Since the 1960s, climbers there had reported seeing evidence of the tree lobsters. However, there was no proof at the time.

The team scaled the rocky cliffs of Ball’s Pyramid—no easy task by day, but they also climbed at night, since tree lobsters are nocturnal. Their searching finally paid off. They found 24 living tree lobsters, in their enormous glory, clustered around one of the few, spindly bushes growing on Ball’s Pyramid.

“It felt like stepping back into the Jurassic age, when insects ruled the world,” Carlile said.

No one was sure how they got to Ball’s Pyramid. They might have hitched rides on birds, or stowed away on boats. Yet there they were, chilling on their bush in the middle of nowhere.

After some deliberation about moving them, four of the insects, two males and two females, were taken off the island and brought to Australia. One pair died, but the pair at the Melbourne Zoo, nicknamed Adam and Eve, apparently hit it off and soon, Eve started laying eggs. Though there was a scare when she got sick, she recovered, and the stick bug population began to take off. By 2008, there were 700 adults and 11,000 eggs. Scientists also noticed that unlike other bugs, tree lobsters like to pair off, and even sleep cuddled up to their mating partner.

Currently, there are tentative plans to release the tree lobsters back on Lord Howe Island. However, there are several issues. First of all, the rats are still there, so they’d have to be removed. Also, the residents of Lord Howe Island are a little less than keen on the prospect of these giant, prehistoric-looking stickbugs showing up in their yards and homes. As a result of the latter, there’s actually a PR campaign in the works that aims to make people feel a little more welcoming of tree lobsters. They might not be the cutest creatures out there, but hopefully they’ll soon start thriving in a natural habitat.

Only three years old, Karina survived ELEVEN days lost in the Sakha Republic, all thanks to her loyal pup. The nameless canine hero cuddled with her for nine days, until he left to go find humans and get them to follow him back to the little girl.

Karina’s mother had thought that she’d followed her father, who had gone to his native village. With no phones to make sure, you can imagine the mother’s shock when her husband returned alone.

On the ninth day Karina was missing, the dog came home.

Her parents worried that she’d have no one to keep her warm at night.

The dog led the rescuers straight to her hiding spot.

While she understandably didn’t want to talk too much about her experience, she told her parents that she’d been eating wild berries and drinking water from rivers.

Though she was hungry and bitten-up by insects, Karina was in shockingly good condition.

Thanks to her dog, she’s safe and sound.

What a lucky girl to have such a brave and caring friend!

After spending years in the rat race, with their lives revolving around paying a hefty mortgage, Andrew and Gabriella Morrison decided to call it quits. They bravely decided to downsize to save money and adjust their lives so they could focus on more important things than monthly bills.
Since they both had a background in construction, Andrew and Gabriella built their tiny house (called “hOMe”) together. Then, they even set up the website Build A Tiny House to help others do the same.

Now, they live mortgage free.

Not only that, but this Oregon family is much closer now that they live in hOMe.

They have zero debt, plus their heating and cooling bills are much lower.

The small home is stylish inside and out

Each corner of hOMe is perfectly decorated.

There is plenty of seating for guests.

They don’t have to skip on amenities, as there is a full kitchen in the small home.

Andrew and Gabriella have plenty of room in the bedroom as well.

hOMe includes a toilet and shower.

The family never has to run outside to use the facilities.

Their 14 year-old daughter, Terra, has a small cabin to herself but often spends time in the main house with her parents.

Downsizing to a smaller home, especially a tiny house, saves money and lets people focus on more important things in life. Having extra bills and responsibilities can be overwhelming. With a tiny house like hOMe, everything is just a little bit simpler.

Alek wanted to change his focus in life, so he built this small house. “Inhabiting such a small space will force me to live in a simpler, more organized and efficient way.”

Most grown children have heard this question from their parents at some point in their lives: “If all your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?”
It’s a question that pushes us to think for ourselves. That question doesn’t inspire me, but this man in California does. Alek Lisefski is a web designer who decided to take everything we know about building a house and flip it on its head. Instead of going in debt for hundreds of thousands of dollars, he built his own home for the low, low price of $30,000. It’s only 8x20ft, but that’s what makes it awesome. It’s a tiny house, it’s mobile and it looks so cool I would give anything to live in it for a day.

He, his girlfriend Anjali and their dog Anya moved into the tiny house that he built.

The home was built on top of a trailer while he was still in Iowa.

Upon completion, he towed the house all the way to California, where the small family now resides.

Instead of focusing on paying off debt, they can instead spend their money on leisure and travel.

Not only that, but the small space won’t distract Alek from his work.

Plus, it is adorable.

All of the natural light makes the tiny house seem bigger than it is.

The little nooks and design of the house doesn’t make it seem cramped.

Every space in this house is functional.

Slide-out drawers hide pantry shelves and spices.

While the walls are lined with shelves to help with kitchen storage.

The bathroom is small but functional. The tiny sink doesn’t take up much space, nor does the shower.

On the second floor of the house is a loft.

It’s used as their bedroom with a full mattress.

The small space isn’t oppressive, in fact, it’s snug and comfortable.

There’s even room for closet space along the wall.

Tiny houses may not be right for everyone, but the tiny house movement is growing more popular. More people are realizing that you cannot measure your happiness by the square footage of your house. Instead of going deep into debt to afford a huge house, the people who build tiny houses are freeing up their money and building their dream homes at the same time.
