She purchased the an IKEA PS 2014 lamp and spray painted the entire globe.

Then used masking tape to tape of the parts they wanted darker.

Next was tracing a stencil onto the lamp for greater detail.

“I decided to start designing something I would like to play with. Not knowing where to start, I used Apollo Command Module panels for reference, and my own experience with panels working as a Loadmaster on C-17’s.”

“Took a day to get both panels cut ( I made 2 panels exactly the same for each nephew, because if you get boys something different they fight).”

“I called dad and asked for some help, I needed to make something to mount the panels on, but it had to have room to put electronics in. Dad has a nice shop in his garage, so I sketched up some designs and he had the wood cut to spec.”

“At the last minute I decided to order 6 breadboards for the electronics. I am so glad I did. It made everything easier. (side note: I didn’t really understand I was ordering LED’s that were something like 20K lumens….. once I got them lit up I immediately was all “I SEE THE LIGHT!”)”

“This is the back of the first panel I put together. I learned so much on this first one. It looks so messy. The second one looks really slick and organized. Basically, I learned how to use solder, and the lesson of keeping wires orderly as you go. Hot glue helped a lot.

(I have been asked for the spreadsheet I used for the wiring logic…. It was in my head… it was just LED’s lighting up, no arduino or any computer stuff).”

“The power and alignment test was perfect. Just looking like this I was happy. 10 year old me could play with that for hours.”

“Another angle of the test lighting, and i left it running for 12 hours to ensure it wouldn’t catch fire…. yeah i was paranoid I messed something up.”

“Once I was happy, I glued all the circuit boards down, mounted the DC connector to the back, and plugged it in (takes a 5v 2a DC converter). All the switches worked in the appropriate logic. EXAMPLE: When you turn Weapon’s power on, the “WARNING ARMED” light comes on the weapons panel. This allows you to place the fire button into the “ARM” position which now lights it up red. etc.”

“The ship status panel: each LED has a corresponding switch that deals with that system. Once you lock the FTL switch, the FTL button lights up blue. Pressing the FTL button ignites the FTL drive.”

“You can see the Master power switch, this turns it all off and on. Second and Battery are dummy switches that just control their corresponding LED. You will also notice some missing switches, not all of them got here in time for xmas, but it doesn’t take away from the effect.”

“Basically tried to bucket them into ROYGBIV. I have no idea how many, but this took a bit of time.”

“Painted matte black with several cans of Rustoleum. The finish does not have to be perfect since it will be covered in epoxy.”

“This was taken immediately after the bar was put in it’s final position. It needs to be as close to perfectly level as possible, otherwise the epoxy resin will “pool” in low spots.”

To be fair, this took several attempts because of numerous factors: visually, it wasn’t as cool as I wanted it to be. Also, we had a lot of black caps, but few bright blue (for example), so laying them down “evenly” was challenging.

Unfortunately, once the caps are down, attempting to move them results in disaster due to the caps shifting/overlapping each other. So, the process would begin all over again if it wasn’t right. At one point we attempted adhering them to the bar top with spray adhesive, but that ended up looking terrible not to mention messy.”

“Here is the bar top after assembly. Two large pieces of quality 5/8″ plywood form the base. The rails are 1 1/2″ poplar, and were notched with a table saw and hand routed. The whole assembly was glued and nailed.”

“As mentioned before, we did not have an equal number of caps sorted by color. Since we had far more black, we needed a way to utilize them without the overall look becoming unbalanced. It took at least 4 hours and several restarts to get to this point.”

“It took ~5 layers to thoroughly cover the caps. The last layer we allowed it to flow over the sides to cover the rails, which made a helluva mess. Again, drop cloths are your friend.”

“The heat gun is used to pull the bubbles out. There may be a better way, but seems to be the most common found on the web.”

Before starting his project, averagejones already had a basement refrigerator with a single keg. At any given time, it held beer or soda — not both. Worst of all, he had to walk downstairs to pour a drink!

There was a small space for taps in the kitchen, but with young kids in the house, he didn’t want to put in a huge fridge or kegerator. Instead, he commissioned a barrel worker to cut an old wine barrel in half.

After a coat of finish, it was ready for its new home in the kitchen. Now came the hard part. Would he actually be able to run keg lines to the basement? And if he did, would he be able to figure out the right combination of gas and pressure?

There was only one way to find out: Drill a hole!

A little later, averagejones dropped his first line into the basement…

…and attached it to his keg. He also drilled several holes in the fridge to ensure that his drinks stayed cold.

Now for a test! He hooked up his tap and poured a drink. It worked, but it was still on the floor.

Time to drill another hole!

Tap lines were run from the floor to the top of the barrel…

…and the iron taps were attached.

The finished product is stunning, but best of all, it’s fully functional. Now averagejones and his family can enjoy tap soda and beer in their very own kitchen.

In celebration of the completed project, he poured an IPA and drank it by the fire. Life doesn’t get much better than that!
