These bridges are some pretty cool feats of engineering and ingenuity and they’re definitely not run of the mill.

Let’s cross together and hold hands, so we don’t fall off.

Lucky Knot Bridge
Changsha, China
Opened to the public late last year, this bridge was designed to evoke the principles of the mobius ring and the traditional Chinese folk art of knotting. It’s 606 feet long and 78 feet high, and that 3 footpaths that wind up and down, connecting two parks and offering some surreal views of the river and landscape.

I’m dizzy just looking at it.

Island in the Mur
Graz, Austria
It’s kind of hard to just classify this structure as just a bridge, as it’s also an island and floating entertainment centre. This steel and glass structure links the two banks of the Mur river, and while it allows people to get from one end to the other, in the middle, you’ve got an artificial island, that looks like a half-opened seashell. There you’ll find a floating cafe, children’s playground and an amphitheatre with wavy benches for a waterside concert under the stars.

It also looks badass at night.

Eshima Ohashi Bridge
Japan
For this bridge, it’s all about perspective. While it looks like the steep incline of a roller coaster, the bridge is a mile long, linking the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato. While it looks like an insane incline, it’s actually an optical illusion. One side of the bridge has a 6.1% grade, while the other has a 5.1% grade. When you look at it from the side, it’s a gentle rise, but from the front/back, it looks dangerously steep.

You just can’t judge a bridge by its angle.

This is a cable-stayed bridge in Sao Paulo, over the Pinheiros River. It’s the only X shaped bridge in the world that’s stabilized by cables, and during the months of November and December the cables are strung with lights to create a coloured christmas tree.

Python Bridge
The Netherlands
This is one of the most unusual bridges in Amsterdam, and for a city known for it’s bridges, that says a lot. It evokes the movement of a snake, or the curled smoke from a finely crafted joint.

Dragon Bridge, Vietnam
Vietnam
Anywhere you go in Asia, you’re going to see dragons. It’s a symbol of power and fortune, and when it came time to design a new bridge in Da Nang, the most logical choice was to make it dragon-themed. This 2,185 foot-long bridge is made of steel and literally breathes fire from its mouth. Every Saturday and Sunday at 9pm, is a spectacular show of lights and flames, making it one of the most badass bridges on this list.

Falkirk Wheel
Scotland
This one isn’t technically a ‘bridge’ per se, but it’s a pretty cool piece of engineering and artistry, with a little bit of WTF thrown in. This is a rotating boat elevator, that connects various canals in Scotland. The wheel raises boats up by 79 feet, but then they still need to float along an aqueduct until they hit a series of locks to get to the top of the canal.

Never thought I’d type the words ‘boat elevator.’

‘Infinite Bridge’
Denmark
This is a bridge that doesn’t go anywhere, really. But somehow, it’s still considered a bridge. This was built to celebrate the scenic coastal landscape in Aarhus, Denmark and is a circular, walkable structure that allows people to walk from the shore to the sea. It’s about 623 feet in circumference and 197 feet in diameter, so it’s pretty big.

Living Root Bridges
India
There’s a type of tree in Meghalaya, India that the locals use to build bridges, turning nature into their advantage. They train the roots of a rubber fig tree to grow along channels in the ground and across rivers using the hollowed out trunk of a betel nut tree. Once the roots hit the soil on the other side, they take root. It can take close to a decade for the bridge to become fully functional, but once it does, it’s incredibly strong.

Oresund Bridge
Sweden and Denmark
The opening of this bridge was a game-changer. It allowed for a non-stop route between mainland Europe and Sweden a reality. It’s not just a bridge, however – it’s a bridge, artificial island and tunnel. Since they needed to allow for ships to pass through, and have an un-impeeded approach to the Kastrup Airport in Denmark, a tunnel was the way to go.

It’s a pretty gnarly piece of infrastructure.

Circular Laguna Garson Bridge
Uruguay
Located on the southern coast of Uruguay, this ring-shaped bridge was constructed to replace a raft crossing between the two cities of Rocha and Maldonado. The design is to ensure that drivers slow down when crossing, and they’ve built in some pedestrian walkways to take in the view of the lagoon. The original raft system that was in place only allowed for 2 cars to cross the lagoon at one time and didn’t run in bad weather, but now, over 1,000 vehicles are able to pass at one time. The hope this this easy passageway will allow future development on the coasts of these two cities.

The Rolling Bridge
England
When it comes to designing bridges that need to move out of the way, this bridge designer kept things simple and looked to the pillbug for inspiration. When the ships need to come through the Grand Union Canal, the bridge rolls away. When someone needs to cross, it gently unfolds across the canal.

Once unrolled completely, it looks like a pretty regular bridge.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge
England
This bridge opened in 2001, and people haven’t stopped marvelling at it. It’s a tiling structure, with a pedestrian and cyclist bridge on one side, and a supporting curve on the other, both fixed to a pivot. When a ship needs to pass through, the curves tilt up.

Like this. According to the designers, it’s meant to have a rotation much like a slowly opening eyelid.

Lego Bridge
Wuppertal,German
I think, out of all the awesome bridges on the list, this one is my favourite. This concrete railway bridge, might look like it’s made of Lego, but that’s actually due to the talent of a graffiti artist named Martin Heuwold. Even the bosses at Lego approve. I’d hate to see one of those bricks fall and someone step on it. You thought small Lego’s hurt.

Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain
South Korea
According to the city of Banpo, this is the most multi-functional bridge in the world. The span, is a two-tiered bridge, with the bottom part designed to be submerged during period of high rainfall. The top bridge, was outfitted with thousands of LEDs and water jets in 2009, creating the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain. The t380 water jets shoot over 190 tons of recycled river water per minute and makes one hell of a water show.

Try to top that Bellagio fountain!

Slauerhoffbrug
Netherlands
The local nickname for this bridge is the ‘pancake flipper,’ on account of its construction. It’s the only bridge of it’s kind, called an automatic bascule bridge. It uses two arms to lift an actual section of the road out of place and move it away, so that ships can pass. When the bridge is lowered, you can’t even see the lift arms, as they blend into the surrounding structure. It’s pretty ingenious, really.

Twin Sails Bridges
Dorset, England
Opening in 2012, the Twin Sails Bridge is what’s called a “double-leaved bascule bridge,” that spans the channel in Dorset. The bridge has got two 75-foot tall triangular lifting leave that open up as much as 15 times a day, to let boats through. When they’re down in the closed position, the bridge is completely flat, but when they lift up, they look like yacht sails in the air.

It’s a pretty trippy sight to see them lifted and lit up at night. You’d never guess it’s a bridge.

The Moses bridge
The Netherlands
Why build a bridge over water, when you can build one through water? Back during the 17th century, fortresses and moats were used to protect parts of the Netherlands from French and Spanish invaders. One of the fort, Fort de Roovere, has just been restored and the designers had an idea to build a sunken bridge to help traverse the moat. This ‘invisible’ bridge is sneakily inserted into the water, and from far away, you can’t even see the retaining walls. It just looks like you’re walking through water, just like Moses. That’s my childhood dream.

These are radar installations that are within 30-50 nautical miles of an airport that work with towers and Route Traffic to direct planes.

For inter-airport, as well as across various airports – dedicated lines so that airports don’t need to rely on outside telecommunications utilities.

Essentially the engineers and tech support of the Airport.

So far, it’s been 9 years and counting without a fatal accident for a US carrier.

I am going to preface this entire post with this – I am not a vegan. I prefer the debauchery of red meat with my 120 proof bourbon. You will have to pry that last stick of bacon from my dead, lifeless, Kung-Fu grip. Ok, now that that’s out of the way… Apparently going vegan can have some substantial effects on your sex life (aside from the life shattering embarrassment). Summer is as good a time as any to start making healthy choices, so if you need some inspiration, check out this quick rundown.

Vegans are known to eat foods very high in zinc such as basil, figs, pine nuts, avocados, almonds, asparagus, celery, pumpkin seeds, chickpeas and banana – or what I like to call, rabbit food. Well it’s not so funny any more because zinc has also been shown to cause a chemical reaction in the body which substantially increases libido.

Yeah, that word is disgusting. There is really no way around that. However, here is some sexy science for you: a vegan diet has been shown to improve the smell and taste of body secretions. There’s that word again…

The slimming effects cause by a vegan diet (cutting out all the fatty meats) can dramatically reshape your body. This not only makes you more attractive to prospective lovers, but makes you more confident about yourself and therefor more eager to get naked (which is a key part of sex I’ve been told).

Not only will you feel better about yourself, but you may also perform better. In a recent study, 64% of participants felt significant increases in their energy and vitality when they switched to a vegan diet. Be the energizer bunny in bed.

Dropping meats and substituting fruits and vegetable in their place is like adding natural moisturizers to your diet. Since plants have a far higher water content, you’ll flush out more toxins and impurities, meaning your skin will be softer and more sensitive. It also means less breakouts. Then again, that’s a fetish now or something, right?

Another byproduct of eating more fruits and vegetables, and in turn ingesting more water, is an increase of natural lubrication. Cutting the meat could mean cutting the KY which means a more personal and passionate experience.

As we all know, meat, red meats in particular, cause damage to our cardiovascular system by clogging arteries and preventing proper blood flow. That very same blood flow is crucial for both sets of bits and pieces to function properly. Better blood flow allows women to climax easier and men to get stronger pumps from their love muscles.

Eating meat often means you’re ingesting hormones and antibiotics that can do all sorts of heinous shit to the chemical balance of your body. Chemical imbalances are frequently tied to mood swings, anxiety, depression and low libido. Cutting the meat out of your diet just might make you a happier person which means more smiles. Not bacon though. No one is happier without bacon. It’s science.

I will disavow any knowledge of recommending this if you ever ask me, but here goes. As a substitute for meat soy can have some fairly serious positive impacts on your sex life. Soy isoflavones have been proven to help prostate health, which is crucial for a man’s sexual health. Without a healthy functioning prostate, your libido and fertility plummet through the floor.

The Spy that Loved Him and Her
Chevalier d’Eon was a French diplomat and spy in England and Russia, with remarkable androgynous physical characteristics, and good mimic skills. Once he retired after 49 years, he revealed to the public that he had been a woman the entire time. She was henceforth made to wear gender appropriate clothing for the rest of her life. She went on to write some books and support the American Revolution. But here’s the kicker.

When she died after a paralyzing fall, the doctors found out she was actually a man the whole time, with a feminine physique.

He was double crossdressing.

Julius Caesar Was a Badass Hostage Negotiator
When a 25-year-old Julius Caesar was captured by Sicilian pirates who didn’t know who he was, they demanded 20 talents of silver (which is about 1,400 lbs of silver or $600,000 by today’s silver prices) for his ransom. Caesar was offended, and demanded they ask at least 50, because he was more valuable than that. It took Caesar’s associates 38 days to get together all the silver, which left him at the mercy of the pirates.

While in their custody, Caesar treated them like subordinates, demanding the they leave him alone to nap or that they listen to speeches and plays that he’d put on. All along, Caesar joked that he was going to have them arrested and crucified when they let him go, which they all found very funny and laughed with him. At least until they got their money and Caesar was released, then he came back and the pirates were arrested and crucified.

Then they stopped laughing.

Papa, Someone is Watching You
It’s been documented that in the later stages of his life, Ernest Hemingway became incredibly paranoid, thinking that the FBI was following him and that his phone was bugged and his mail being read. This caused him to have a total mental breakdown and he was sent to the Mayo Clinic under and assumed name. He underwent over 30 rounds of electro-shock therapy and courses of drugs, to the point that his sanity and memory started to go and he couldn’t write. Soon after, in 1961, he shot himself.

The irony is, due to his ties to Cuba and his exploits during WWII, the Freedom of Information Act revealed that the FBI was indeed doing all the things he claimed to have said they were doing. They even bugged his phone while he was at the Mayo Clinic.

Cobain had it right… just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t after you.

Sometimes a Wrong Turn Can Lead to World War II
If you remember your history class, you’ll recall that World War I started when Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. What you might not recall is that it was a series of random events that lead to his death on that day (one could argue that he was gonna die sometime, but not this way).

Let’s break this down: a guerrilla group called the Black Hand wanted independence for Bosnia and the best way to go about it was to assassinate the Archduke. They had a plan and a member by the name of Gavrilo Princip wanted to do the job. But they didn’t really have a plan. They were just gonna wing it.

So, unaware of this plan, the Archduke, his wife and some random political advisors were driving around the city in an open-topped car. When his motorcade passed by some of the assassins, one of them threw a grenade that took 10 sec to detonate, allowing the Archduke to get away but taking out the car behind him. Instead of getting out of there, the Archduke wanted to do something unwise.

He wanted to go to the hospital to visit those injured in the blast. The driver, however, had no idea where he was going, so they took some wrong turns and just happened to pass by a cafe where Gavrilo Princip was enjoying a sandwich.

So he took his chance and changed the world

Sometimes, the Sports You Like Will Make Enemies
During the 1960’s, US spy planes were tasked with taking photos of Cuba, after an agreement was made between Kennedy and Soviet Premier Khrushchev, that the Soviets wouldn’t bring weapons or build instillations on the island. When they brought the photos back to the US and they were analyzed, they realized that the Cubans were building sports fields. But instead of the expected baseball diamonds (which they used to gauge activity in areas – if they’re building a field, they’re looking to inhabit that space), they saw something else – soccer fields.

When this was brought up to the CIA, they realized that the only way that soccer fields would be showing up in Cuba instead of baseball diamonds, is if there were Soviets living and building bases there, as only they liked soccer.

This is how the Cuban Missile Crisis started.

When you Squeal like a Rat, Everybody Wins
Every knows the legend of Whitey Bulger, one of the most successful mob bosses in history. He ran the organized crime racket in Boston from the late 70’s to the early 80’s and no one understood how he was getting away with it. He was known to be a mob boss, was always getting more and more territory, but nothing was ever done to take him down, despite all the evidence against him.

Turns out he had a friend in the FBI and was working for them as an informant. He would rat on other organized crime families and once they were arrested, he’d take over the territory. It was a win for Whitey as he got more and more powerful, and a win for his FBI buddy as he was making all the busts and making a reputation for himself.

The FBI Agent Who Cried Wolf And Was Right
John P. O’Neil was the kind of guy who always wanted to be part of the FBI. Starting in the J. Edgar Hoover building as a fingerprint clerk and tour guide, he got his education in justice and forensics and was hired by the Bureau, working on white-collar crime, organized crime and counterintelligence. In the late 90’s, he was chief of the counterintelligence division and started to hear rumours of the growing threat of Terrorism. He was the first to identify Al-Qaeda as a legitimate threat to homeland security and tried to get his higher ups to focus on them. He was ignored and reprimanded passed over for promotions due to some personal and professional issues.

After an assignment to Yemen that went south, he was reprimanded again and forced to retire in 2001. He ended up taking a job at the World Trade Centre in New York as the head of security on August 23, 2001.

His remains were found in the rubble of the World Trade Centre attack on September 11th; perpetuated by Al-Qaeda. Turns out, he was right.

Edith Wilson: Secret President of the United States
The world might still be waiting for its first female President, but it turns out, the US might have had one already – 28th President Woodrow Wilson’s wife Edith. Elected in 1913, Wilson was one of the most predominantly public US presidents, having huge role in geo politics during WWI and the aftermath and not being shy with his speeches, meetings and press availability. For the leader of the free world, he was incredibly visible; at least until 1919.

After a global meeting in Paris, Wilson had a severe stroke, which left him unable to write, stand for long or even speak. Edith decided that they had two options: let the public know and leave office or take over his duties. So she created a story about how Wilson was going to double down and focus on his work – retreating from the public eye, meeting with press, cabinet or the public. Edith became the defacto President for the next year, consulting with Woodrow when he was feeling well, until his term was up. This wasn’t known until many years later, and now she’s well known as the first acting female President of the United States.

Never Use Psychology on Someone You Don’t Know
At the start of the Cold War, psychologist Henry Murray developed a personality profiling test to help weed out Soviet Spies with psychological warfare, and determine which US spies are ready for the field. Calling it Project MKUltra, he began experimenting on Harvard students. He made one student the control, as he was a predictable, law-abiding conformist and ran his tests. Then he had that student write an essay on his core beliefs, then had an aggressive interrogator come in and tear those beliefs apart, to see if the student would fight back. He didn’t.

The experience left him a psychologically broken man, who after graduating, sequestered himself in the woods, trying to put his belief system back into place, by writing an essay. He kept writing that essay for decades and became convinced that the world had to read it, so he found a way to make everyone read it. You’ve probably read it.

Who Says Double Dipping is Bad?
Juan Pujol Garcia was a spanish citizen during WWII, who wanted desperately to be a spy. After surviving the Spanish Civil War, he developed a loathing for Communism and Fascism, so he wanted to help Allies. He approached the British army and offered to Spy, but was turned down. He then went to the Germans and pretended to be a fanatically pro-Nazi Spanish government official and offered his services there, where he was hired as a German agent. They sent him to Britain to spy, but instead he went to Portugal and made up intelligence that he sent back to Germany. They believed that he had a developed a ring of spies and trusted him with more missions.

Meanwhile he went to the British with this Germany spy ring intact and offered them a way to get one up on the Germans. They hired him as a double agent, code naming him GARBO. After helping to mislead the Germans during the Normandy invasion, he was awarded a Member of the British Empire. At the same time, for his ‘contributions’ for the Germans (they never picked up that he was lying to them), he got an Iron Cross.

Bet he’s the only guy to get medals for bravery by opposing forces.

Bad Things Happen When You Go to the Movies
In 1987, a security guard was assigned to keep an eye on an abandoned and disputed Private Radiotherapy Hospital in Brazil. One day he decided to take the day off to go see Herbie Goes Bananas. While he was away, thieves came in and looted the building, including taking left behind nuclear material, hoping to sell whatever they found.

Except they didn’t know what they had, so the thieves began dismantling the equipment. Despite feeling ill, vomiting and getting painful ulcers on there hands, they didn’t stop taking the machines apart until the radioactive material was exposed. He then sold the metal and materials to a scrapyard; no one being the wiser that this was radioactive material. The resulting leak of radiation resulted in 4 people dying and 249 being significantly affected by radiation. This was one of the worst nuclear disasters in history.

Thou Shalt Not Covet Thy Neighbour’s Wife
Jonny Cash is known for the song “Ring of Fire,” but did you know he didn’t write it? June Carter did, and the ring of fire she was alluding to, was her secret love for him. She was a married woman and was desperately in love with Jonny Cash, but couldn’t do much about it.

After he recorded it in ’63, the two of them performed duets and met several times platonically until her divorce in 1966. Jonny and June were married in 1968, and made some epic music together.

That connection was so strong that after June Carter Cash died in May of 2003, Jonny couldn’t live without her and followed her to the Grand Ol’Opry in the sky 4 months later.

Hell Truly Hath No Fury…
Olga of Kiev was the wife of Igor, who was the ruler of a part of easter Europe called Kievan Rus. When a dissatisfied tribe called the Drevlians rose up in protest against taxes and killed her husband, she got revenge.

The plan was that the leader of the Drevlians would marry her and take over the kingdom, so they sent an envoy with their proposal. She buried him alive. Then she sent a message that she’d accepted the proposal, but wanted an escort of nobles to escort her. They came and she offered them her bath house. They crammed in there to clean up and she burnt it down.

Then she held a funeral for her husband and invited the rest of the Drevlian populace to attend. Attracted by free food and booze, they all came and her soldiers slaughtered them all. Then she marched to their city and asked for their surrender. They agreed and she asked for a tribute of a bird from their homes (in that time, birds would nest in the rafters of each home). They agreed, and she tied a lit match to each bird and let them fly home, burning down the village and declaring herself Queen.

If that’s not epic, I don’t know what is. Even better, since she attempted to bring Christianity to the area, she’s also close to being a saint. Why don’t they tell us these stories in church?

The Doppelgänger Epic Fail
During World War I, a German passenger liner named Cap Trafalgar was turned into an auxiliary cruiser and sent to patrol the waters off the coast of Brazil near Trindade. Early one morning during one of it’s first engagements of the war, it was spotted by a British ship and attacked.

The irony was that the Cap Trafalgar was disguised as a British ship called the HMS Carmania; the very ship that spotted them and ultimately sank them. After the inevitable who’s who, the British attacked and pummelled the German ship into submission.

Even more ironic is that German warships were sent to rescue them, but saw two British ships fighting and feared a trap, so they left, causing it to be a decisive British victory.

But revolutionary “vertical forests” will help freshen things up. They also look rad as hell.

The Nanjing Towers, designed by Italian architect Stefano Boe, will be completed in 2018. The surfaces of the overgrown towers are covered in 2,500 shrubs and over 1,000 trees, churning out around 132 pounds of oxygen everyday.

Will that help make any significant difference in China’s rapidly-increasing pollution problem? I have no idea! I just like posting cool pictures, man.

The balconies offer gorgeous views of lush, sprawling forests towering over an otherwise industrial cityscape.

The taller tower contains a museum, a rooftop club, a green architecture school, and offices, while the smaller tower will house a 247-room Hyatt hotel and a rooftop pool.

British publishing giant Miles Blackwell died in 2001 and donated most of his fortune to charity but also left £10 million (about $15 million) to his chicken, Gigoo.

Chunmun
Chunmun, a long-tailed macaque monkey, has been pampered by his owners who have raised him like a son. The couple’s business took off after they adopted Chunmun and in the couple’s will the monkey is the sole heir to their home and business. He’s so pampered that they even set up an elaborate wedding for him in 2010.

Gunther IV
Countess Karlotta Libenstein of Germany died in 1991 and left her entire $80 million fortune to her German Shepherd, Gunther III. The fortune has been invested prudently and has turned into $375 million–which belongs to the next in line, Gunther IV.

Blackie
Blackie inherited an estate worth $13 million when his owner died in 1988. Ben Rea, a British antiques dealer, made his cat the wealthiest ever at the time according to Guinness World Records.

Trouble
Real estate developer, Leona Helmsley, was dubbed the “Queen of Mean” and was quite the character. When she dies in 2007 she left $12 million in her will to Trouble, a white Maltese Terrier. A judge later reduced that inheritance to $2 million in what was a big media sensation.

Toby Rimes
Toby was a poodle owned by the last sister of a wealthy New York family, Ella Wendel. It is said that the dog dined nightly at an elegant table with velvet tablecloth and napkins. When Wendel passed away in 1931 many people claimed they were heirs of the Wendels, but it is believed Toby came away with the reported $40 million that Wendel was worth. Unfortunately, the dog died shortly after his owner.

It’s not often the supposed scammer becomes the scammed, but it’s apparently so.

The culprits are two sisters from Toronto, Canada named Jyoti and Kiran Matharoo, who are, I guess, the Canadian Kardashians by the looks of their Instagram. They’ve got the market cornered on the sexy and exotic shots, product placements and barely concealed body parts. Between the two of them, they’ve got more than 50K followers, but that wasn’t enough for their lavish tastes, apparently

Earlier this year, they reached out to Nigerian businessman Femi Otedola, and claimed that he cheated on his wife with one of them, and they’d release proof unless he paid them millions of dollars.

He launched an investigation, and found that the sexy sisters have a history of recording conversations and having sex with rich guys, then trying to extort them, then releasing the videos and photos anyways.

Sneaky. In any case, they were arrested in Lagos and are facing charges that include “the humiliation and cyber-bulling of some 274 persons, based in Africa.”

That’s a lot research for their schemes.

Police found tons of laptops and iPads with information about men, including videos of the ladies having sex with them, as well as the blackmail messages. Also, they have quite the reputation in the Nigerian nightlife scene as notoriously promiscuous sisters.

Not to condone this sort of behaviour, but technically, these guys that are being blackmailed are guilty of what they’re being accused of, so there’s some sort of poetic justice going on here. I mean, c’mon gents, you know what you’re getting into with these girls, and you’re cheating on your wife..
