The project, formally called Tactical Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, is aimed at providing special operators, such as Navy SEALs and Special Forces, with enhanced mobility and protection technologies.

The TALOS suit powers an exoskeleton structure that can help troops conserve energy while on patrol.

Soldiers can quickly turn off the aided “walking” if they need to move during combat.

TALOS will have a physiological subsystem that lies against the skin that is embedded with sensors to monitor core body temperature, skin temperature, heart rate, body position and hydration levels.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt Allen, SOCOM spokesman said, “The idea is to help maintain the survivability of operators as they enter that first breach through the door.”

The GPNVG-18 (Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle) allows for a broader field of view. In addition, the helmet can display multiple sets of data from it’s internal computers.

It can even monitor a soldier’s thoughts which can then be sent back to a command control team…they will be able to see what he’s seeing and know what he’s thinking.

Taking it a step further, the suit will monitor medical information if the soldier is wounded.

Now for the craziest technology of the TALOS, its armor.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) are developing a next-generation kind of armor called “liquid body armor.”

According to Mr. Allen, it “transforms from liquid to solid in milliseconds when a magnetic field or electrical current is applied”.

Lt. Cmdr. Matt Allen, SOCOM spokesman said, “The ultimate purpose of the TALOS project is to produce a prototype in 2018. That prototype will then be evaluated for operational impact.”

Come 2018, the shadow warriors from units such as Army’s (1st SFOD-D) “Delta” to the Navy SEALs (DEVGRU) “Team Six” may be taking the TALOS into harms way.
Big shout-out to our friends a “We Are The Mighty” for helping put this gallery and information behind this future technology.

You may think that your looking at “sonic booms” but you’d be wrong.

In fact, it’s almost impossible to “see” a sonic boom with the naked eye.

As an aircraft gets near the speed of sound, around 767mph, a vapor cone forms around the plane.

This cone forms from a discontinuity of air pressure and temperature when the air loses it’s capacity to hold water. First a vapor like condensation will form and eventually it shapes into a cone shape.

Above photo of F-22 Raptor during a turn. Notice the bottom verse the top. High pressure “below” and condensation “above” the wings.

Creating this vapor cone without causing an actual sonic boom shockwave is tough. The pilot has to travel just below the speed of sound.

This makes performers like the Blue Angels and the Thunderbirds even more amazing. If they travel to fast and generate a sonic boom…it’s a problem for the ears of those watching below.

Following her second second tour in Afghanistan USA Today did a fascinating profile on the 25-year-old cheerleader turned soldier which you can read below.

Mech suits may be part of real world sooner than we think. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is solving the problem of weight. Soldiers have to carry heavy loads of equipment and the Warrior Web looks to make that burden easier for soldiers. The Warrior web uses a sort of mechanical exoskeleton to augment the soldier’s strength.

MOIRE (Membrane Optic Imager Real-Time Exploitation)

MOIRE is a project that looks to make spying on enemies much cheaper and more extensive. DARPA is attempting to give US Intelligence and military agencies opportunities to be everywhere. Think NSA but on crack…so everyone will lose more privacy.

MOIRE is working on a thing called optical membrane. These membranes will work like a camera lens but will be lighter and cheaper therefore they can launch more of them to monitor everything. The membranes will unfold in space to make 66-foot wide lenses capable of seeing an object three feet across from 22,000 miles away.

LS3 (Legged Squad Support System)

We’ve all seen the LS3 all over the internet it’s a robot like horse that can carry things around. The Aim with this project is to allow this robot to delivery necessary items to soldiers on the field without putting other soldiers at risk to deliver the items.

DARPA Robotics Challenge

Looks like they’re trying to also phase out humans on the battlefield. Can anyone say Terminator Judgement Day? Any way, DARPA is looking to make a number of technological breakthroughs in the area of autonomous robotics such as increases in the strength, dexterity, and endurance possible for mechanical beings.

IVN (In Vivo Nanoplatforms)

IVN is a program that is working on nanoparticles that will swim around in the bodies of soldiers which will analyze their health.  But that’s just not the only thing, they are also working on nanoparticles that will be able to “fix” or “heal” a soldier if they encounter a disease or some sort of ailment.

When a soldier gets sick on the battlefield it can be rather inconvenient to get him or her to a doctor to find out what’s wrong. That’s why DARPA is working on microscopic nanoparticles that swim around in the bodies of warfighters analyzing their health. The IVN program is also working on nanoparticles that can actively fight disease or injury. Who’s ready for their injection?

ACTUV (Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vehicle)

During the Cold War, the problem of keeping track of Soviet submarines was enough to give the Secretaries of Defense and Navy night sweats. Since the end of the USSR, that threat has somewhat diminished, but that hasn’t stopped DARPA from trying to squash it entirely. ACTUV is intended to be an autonomous submarine-tracking vessel roaming the world’s oceans, looking for enemy subs, following them around, and reporting their positions. It could also potentially take them out, if necessary. The ACTUV would motor around in the water for months at a time without any of the restrictions that come with having humans on board. Think of it as a sort of drone for the sea.

Revolutionizing Prosthetics

Remember when Darth Vader chopped Luke Skywalker’s hand off with a light saber and he got it replaced with a robot one? Well, DARPA has a program for that. It’s called Revolutionizing Prosthetics and its goal is to produce robotic arm and hand replacements that restore most (if not all) original functions with control coming directly from the amputee’s brain. The highly dexterous limbs produced are also being fitted to robots.

ALASA (Airborne Launch Assist Space Access)

Rockets are expensive and launching satellites into space so that you can watch DirecTV can get very costly. The goal of ALASA is to find a way to launch a 100-pound satellite into low earth orbit (LEO) for less than a million dollars. To do so, the launch rocket will hitch a ride on an Air Force fighter plane like the F-15.

Of course, DARPA isn’t really concerned about people watching Game of Thrones or finding places with their GPS. It turns out that the military and various government agencies are always jockeying for position at the few rocket launch sites across the country. If they can find a way to launch a satellite from any old runway, though, it would solve a whole bunch of problems for the Department of Defense.

EXACTO (Extreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance)

Hey, wouldn’t it be great if bullets could steer themselves? Well that’s the premise behind EXACTO. According to DARPA, this project aims to dramatically increase the accuracy and speed with which snipers can dispatch their targets. EXACTO is a .50 caliber bullet that is capable of changing direction in flight. But DARPA’s not about to tell you how it works. The official image doesn’t show any kind of fins that could steer the bullet, so how it turns is anyone’s guess. EXACTO has been live fire-tested and was able to hit targets over a mile away that the gun wasn’t even aimed at.

Built and designed in the 1960s after the A-12 Oxcart, the SR-71 Blackbird is still the fastest, most vanguard-ist air-breathing aeroplane in the history of aviation. These once classified photos reveal how Lockheed built both birds in secret, in California. They look taken at the Rebel base in Hoth.

Lockheed engineers used a titanium alloy to construct more than 90 per cent of the SR-71, creating special tools and manufacturing procedures to hand-build each of the 40 planes. Special heat-resistant fuel, oil, and hydraulic fluids that would function at 85,000 feet and higher also had to be developed.

These photos are a testimony to this amazing engineering and manufacturing feat:

Cutaway illustrations of the twin cockpit variant of the SR-71. Notice the inlet funnels that increased the air speed in front of the J58 engines.

Lockheed’s Skunk Works’s manufacturing plant in Burbank, California. Later, both the Oxcart and the Blackbird would be coated with an special black paint that reduced the temperature by 23C (75F) and had radar absorbing capabilities.

Notice the titanium panels forming the skin of these birds.

Only 50 Blackbird airframes were built. “The dies or molds were destroyed as directed by then Secretary of Defence McNamara to prevent any other nation from building the aircraft.”

This is the exhaust of the J-58 engine. It could reach temperatures of 1760C (3200F).

The Blackbirds kept flying long after their retirement from the USAF. One of them stayed at NASA: Here’s a photo from the Armstrong Flight Research Center (then Dryden) of an SR-71 being retrofitted for test of the Linear Aerospike SR Experiment (LASRE).

And now more Blackbird porn because I know you love it.

The analogue cockpit was the only thing that, compared to the rest of futuristic technologies used in the Oxcart and Blackbird, seems completely out of place:

According to Kelly Johnson, no SR-71 was ever touched by any of the more than 1,000 missiles launched at these birds since its first mission to 1981.

And the most shocking thing is that all of them are created by this woman, Lisa Freeman.

War changes the lives of everyone. Whether the soldiers themselves, their communities, or the families. And no change, no hurt, is greater than than the loss of a loved one in the service of their country. It’s up to us as beneficiaries of their sacrifice, to take care of those they leave behind. To help make that “change” in their lives as easy as possible.
One woman who lost her own son to war did just that. And it’s amazing.

Meet the bear soldiers, made entirely out of service uniforms.

These uniforms were not random. Instead, they’re made from deceased servicemembers.

The project, called Matthew Bears, was born some time after she tragically lost her own son, Matthew Freeman, to enemy fire in Afghanistan in 2009.

The goal is to create teddy bears for the children of lost servicemen and women out of the cloth of their uniforms.

Any family that has lost a member in service can send the service member’s uniform to Lisa Freeman to have it made into teddy bears for that service member’s children, or to anyone related to that service member.

The most amazing part. It’s free.

And it’s helping to change the world.

Although war changes us all, what Lisa is doing is to help change the world. Not for all 7 billion people, but instead, for the children of those bravest among us. Please consider supporting Lisa and help her in her cause by visiting The Matthew Freeman Project and donating.

On the surface – This is what they found when they opened up the shack. A ladder?

Reddit user Sniper98g and a friend of his found a phone booth sized metal shack in an unused corner of a military base. Being the curious guys that they are they decided to head inside and go exploring.
Inside they discovered a relic of the Cold War.

First stop – When they got down the ladder they were standing on a small platform

That lead to a staircase.

That went down.

Quite a ways.

At the bottom they found one hell of a door.

That opened up pretty easily. Inside they could see a metal shack of some kind.

Looking back out of the door.

They had to cross a little bridge to get on to the main platform.

Because the whole thing is suspended from big shock isolators.

Better shot of the shock isolator.

This seems to be the whole reason this thing was built. Some kind of old communications equipment.

Behind the shack was a diesel tank.

And, a ladder.

Seems safe.

Now they were down.

The underside had a bunch of old air handling equipment.

Connected to the outside by flexible ducts.

The underside had a bunch of old air handling equipment.

Some of the stuff was in bad shape.

Connected to the outside by flexible ducts.

The bottom of this place had stared to fill with water. He thought about grabbing the flashlight, but figured there were probably a bunch of C.H.U.D.s (Canibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller, the scary creatures from the 1984 horror film of the same name) waiting to grab him under there.

Apparently the site they found was a LCC (launcher control capsule or center), a place where missileers and missile launch officers worked, it’s where they would receive launch orders to fire off land based ICBMs that were located elsewhere. Now it’s nothing but an old rusty bunker, although it would be perfect to seek shelter in during a nuclear apocalypse or a zombie outbreak.
