There was a lot of speculation about what went wrong during the announcement but now it’s clear that there was a mix-up of envelopes. And instead of the best picture, the presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway received an envelope with the best actress category winner Emma Stone from ‘La La Land.’

Now to make things even worse, the announcers had little-to-no indication that they received the wrong envelope because of the lousy typography used on the card. Even though it said Emma Stone on top, it clearly said ‘La La Land’ below, with only the small indication at the very bottom that it’s the best actress award.

Original shot of ‘La La Land’ director Kenneth Lonergan holding the Best Picture card

‘Based on that card design, I’ve reconstructed the card Warren and Faye would’ve seen, the one they received’

‘That’s horrible typography. I will emphasize horrible again. Horrible. Or to be nicer, not good. Look at it again. Of course, anyone could’ve made the same honest error.’

‘Now, let’s imagine an alternate timeline where the presenters were given this modified version of the wrong card, using the same elements of the original card’

‘It may not seem like much to a regular person, but changing the sizing, positioning, and weight of the text makes a big difference. A big enough difference that this embarrassing mistake could’ve been prevented.’

Now compare these two side-by-side to see what difference a good typography can make

So here’s a suggestion for the next year:

Dubbed “Bodyscapes,” the series turns the ridges, hills and valleys of one or more human bodies into strange and surreal landscape photos.

If I asked you to describe a desert, perhaps the blowing sands of the Sahara, you’d picture a desolate place dry and filled with countless dunes. Perhaps you’d think that nothing could be alive there. Now if I asked you to describe the human body, especially the skin, dry, dusty and barren are the last thing you’d think of right? Well that’s what I thought until I saw these amazing landscape photos created by Carl Warner, which play subtle tricks on our eyes, and make us reimagine the wonder that is the human body.

“[The project] plays on the sense of space in which we dwell,” writes Warner.

“The external view of ourselves therefore becomes a more abstract and perhaps more intimate reflection of our inner being when viewed as a landscape or given a sense of place.”

Each photo is named based on the body parts it is composed of, and some are more difficult to make look landscape-like than others.

Check out this “Desert of Sleeping Men.”

Wow, I can’t believe how well Carl tricked my eyes, even when I knew the photos were actually composed of people! Truly amazing.

If you want to see more of Warner’s work with strange landscapes, or even purchase some prints for yourself,  be sure head over to his website. His pieces are truly unique, and they’ll be sure to be an interesting converation piece at your next party!
