17 years ago, Dawnielle Davison almost lost her life. She was just an infant, stuck in house engulfed by flames. When firefighters arrived, they had no idea anyone was in the home, but Mike Hughes rushed in anyways. Had he not rushed in, he would not have found the infant in her crib and the outcome could have been far more devastating.

Five years ago, Hughes says that he reached out to Dawnielle just to say hi. Dawnielle had no idea that she had come so close to death as an infant, so all of this information came as quite the surprise for her. As Dawnielle ramped up for graduation, she knew that there was one person who had to be there. So, she sent out an invitation to Hughes and sure enough, he showed up.

The two shared tears of joy during the emotional reunion. Hughes is part of the reason that Dawnielle was able to walk across the stage and she is eternaly gratful. It’s truly amazing how such a tragic event can bring two strangers together, even atfter 17 years.

Hats of to the brave men and women who risk their lives every day as they protect their communities from fire and harm. Without them, moments like this would not be possible.

Only three years old, Karina survived ELEVEN days lost in the Sakha Republic, all thanks to her loyal pup. The nameless canine hero cuddled with her for nine days, until he left to go find humans and get them to follow him back to the little girl.

Karina’s mother had thought that she’d followed her father, who had gone to his native village. With no phones to make sure, you can imagine the mother’s shock when her husband returned alone.

On the ninth day Karina was missing, the dog came home.

Her parents worried that she’d have no one to keep her warm at night.

The dog led the rescuers straight to her hiding spot.

While she understandably didn’t want to talk too much about her experience, she told her parents that she’d been eating wild berries and drinking water from rivers.

Though she was hungry and bitten-up by insects, Karina was in shockingly good condition.

Thanks to her dog, she’s safe and sound.

What a lucky girl to have such a brave and caring friend!

They covered his eyes, as to not frighten him too badly, and tried to rehydrate him on their way back from the Kapama Private Game Reserve.

In the early twentieth century, it’s estimated there were about 500,000 rhinos throughout Africa and Asia. Because of poaching, their numbers have been rapidly dwindling over the years. The black rhino was killed for its horns so aggressively, it was actually declared extinct in 2011. According to Save the Rhino, South Africa is home to 83% of Africa’s rhinos and 73% of all wild rhinos worldwide.

Unfortunately, this last haven for rhinos has also been experiencing poaching. The rhino poaching situation is reaching a crisis point.

A few rangers were patrolling a wildlife preserve in South Africa when they came across a rhino carcass. The animal was killed by poachers for her horn. Hiding beside her body was something they weren’t expecting: a tiny baby rhino. He was extremely distraught and wouldn’t stop crying.

They named the rhino Gertjie and gently took him away from his mother.

Gertjie was then transported to the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre.

There, he was given a safe home where he could be raised. He’s just under 3 months old.

He drinks about 12 liters of fat-free milk a day as a growing baby rhino.

Even though Gertjie experienced a very traumatic event in his young life, the rangers who found him gave him a chance to grow up to be a normal rhino. Here you can see Gertjie getting to experience his first joyful trot around his new home.

Snuggling with his caretakers is also something the baby rhino loves doing.

He’ll stay at the center until he is old enough to be released back into the wild, where hopefully he can live safely.

Even though the people looking after him hope that he will grow up to be a big, strong, rhino, they are enjoying the time they have with Gertjie. Who wouldn’t enjoy giving this sweetheart a mud bath?

When this eagle found itself in a life-threatening situation it was lucky enough that there were some kind humans around to save its life.

 The eagle had apparently miscalculated its flight and hit the water too hard. With the extra weight from the water on its feathers it was unable to take off again.
It struggled in the water for a few minutes until it was spotted by nearby men, who quickly raced out on a little dingy. Armed with only a wooden pallet they manged to save the eagle by throwing the pallet out so the eagle had something to climb onto and wait for its feathers to dry.

Pallets are like duct tape, there are endless situations where one can come in handy.

Kevin Briggs has saved hundreds of lives over the last 26 years. He is a California Highway Patrol Sergeant who patrols the Golden Gate Bridge and helps people who want to jump from there. In the first photo Kevin Berthia shakes the hand of Kevin Briggs, the officer who talked him down from throwing himself off San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge in 2005.
