The idea of coming full circle and returning whence we came from is one that appeals to many of us, regardless of our faith (or lack thereof), and this is an idea captured perfectly by this beautiful new burial method developed in Italy. The Capsula Mundi project by designers Anna Citelli and Raoul Bretzel has developed an organic, biodegradable burial capsule that will turn the deceased’s body into nutrients for a tree that will grow out of their remains.

After being encapsulated in the fetal position, the deceased is buried and either a tree or tree seed is planted above their capsule. The project’s site already has a number of trees to choose from.

The project is currently only a concept because Italian law forbids such burials. If it were allowed to proceed, however, the project’s aim would be to create entire memorial parks full of trees instead of tombstones. And instead of destroying and burying wood for wooden coffins, we would, at the end of our lives, provide sustenance for new trees instead.

The Bloodwood Tree is native to the African nations of Angola, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zaire, Zimbabwe, and Zambia.

The sap of the Bloodwood Tree is traditionally used as a dye. In some African cultures, the sap is thought to contain magical powers, and is used by tribal doctors to treat a variety of diseases.

The wood of the Bloodwood Tree is also highly sought after by furniture makers. Because of this, the population of wild Bloodwood Trees is rapidly shrinking. In response, the tree has been declared a protected species in many areas.

I would never expect to see blood when chopping down a tree. Talk about disturbing. Sadly, a bleeding tree is not enough to get people to stop chopping them down.

Traditions can be wonderful, but sometimes it’s good to think outside of the box and do things a little differently. Over time, many people come up with new and alternative ways to do things. Sometimes, these new ideas make everyone’s lives easier and more convenient, which we should most certainly be thankful for.

Getting a real Christmas tree can be a hassle. Barring the fact that it can be expensive, it can all be tough to get home, set-up and clean up. Some people would just prefer an easier way to get into the holiday spirit. (Not to mention that, if you use a real tree, you’re just killing a tree.)

A redditor called eonomine designed his own version of a Christmas tree. Although nothing can totally replace the look and feel of a real tree, this design is refreshing in it’s simplicity and minimalism.

Would you believe that this outdoor tile is the beginning of an alternative Christmas tree?

Here are the schematics drawn up for the tree that are pretty straightforward (making this tree all the more appealing)

You’ll need to do a little wood work if you want to try this project out. Measure twice, cut once. And remember, safety first!

It’s relatively easy to put together, though you may need an extra hand when tying the rods together at the top.

Now all you need to do is decorate. This tree was decorated using some plastic wreath, lights, and a little santa hat on top, but you can use whatever you’d like to decorate your homemade tree.

The more I think about it, the more I think one of these alternative Christmas trees would look really good in my apartment. It’s a simple, easy, and quick alternative – sounds good to me! (Plus, if you own a cat, they will be able to do relatively little damage to this minimalist tree.)

Although none of his (many) trees are more than a few years old, he’s been able to give a rendering of what they’re likely to look like one day. The results are magical.

It’s pretty amazing when a tree can produce fruit but it’s just straight up incredible when a tree can produce 40 different kinds of fruit.

These are different kinds of stone fruit. Coming in a plethora of varieties, they are most akin to plums and apricots

One day Sam Van Aken noticed that his grocery store only had a very small variety of local fruits. They just didn’t grow many different kinds where he lived.

Soon after this, he learned that a local orchard was to be destroyed.

Putting two and two together, Sam decided that he would jump at the chance to save the orchard AND help people get more variety in their fruit diet.

Using grafting techniques he learned while growing up on a Pennsylvania farm, Sam started genetically combining different species of stone fruit to make super trees.

Sam focused on stone fruits since there are so many varieties and they’re all genetically similar enough to graft, and thus his Tree of 40 Fruit was born. He has since used the orchard to grow the initial trees, and then moves them to other locations for buyers.

“When I place them somewhere I’ll go to local orchards and local farms and collect their heirloom varieties and graft them onto a tree,” he said. “That way it becomes a sort of agricultural history.”

This Reddit user isn’t a professional. He isn’t a contractor. He is just a simple man who had a simple task: to build a treehouse.

He was helping out a friend in wine country who wanted to add a treehouse to their property (probably just to make it even more insanely beautiful). So, after arming himself with hours of research, he got to work.
It took 57 days to build this “DIY” treehouse. The materials cost him about $5,000 (although he had some door frames and other supplies himself). In less than two months, he was able to create a small playhouse that is more comfortable than most people’s first apartment. I want this.

This was the tree that was selected for the tree house. It was a live oak with three large branches.

The property was situated on a hillside. There was an existing deck (on the right) 26 feet from the tree (the branches on the left), with a gravel access road in between.

A rope ladder access just wouldn’t do, so they decided to build a bridge.

He poured concrete post foundations to place the supporting framework in for stability.

The side slats were made from deconstructed wine barrels (it was wine country after all).

It was going to be a drawbridge initially…

But it would have been dangerous for children.

To prevent any damage from swaying in the wind, he added sliding beam brackets to the support pieces so that the tree could move a little.

Then, it was time to build the deck.

The final deck size was final deck 12′ x 18′.

It was time for framing.

The tree house itself is 8 feet wide by 12 feet long. The over-sized deck gives a two foot walkway around the tree house, although dodging some branches was required.

Sheathing, weatherproofing, and windows installed.

They chose not to let the branches go through the house.

Instead, they built around them.

That way, the house could still be weather-proofed and prevent insects from getting in.

Aside from being a cool place to getaway…

The tree house also has electricity, water, phone, cable, internet, and in-wall speaker wiring.

It’s a home away from home.
