Eugene Finney was subjected to a vicious attack by a shark and says if it weren’t for the fearsome predator, he’d be dead. The father-of-two suffered cuts and bruises and was left in significant pain after a shark smashed into him while he was swimming off the California coast. When he went to the hospital to get checked out, doctors found something more sinister — a cancerous tumor, which, thankfully, they were able to remove. Thanks to the early discovery, it looks like he will make a full recovery.

A groom-to-be known for his one-liners was horrified to be diagnosed with a brain tumor — after losing the ability to crack a joke. Andrew Llewellyn, 34, was known for being the center of a conversation with his amusing stories and wisecracks. When he could no longer remember his favorite jokes — or find the right words to make funny remarks — he became concerned. His GP ran tests. While waiting for the results, he suffered a seizure. Doctors discovered he had an egg-sized tumor and a cyst pressing on the part of the brain used for speech. Llewellyn underwent a four-hour operation to remove the growths, and days later he was back to his razor-sharp self.

The social media site Reddit may have a bad reputation for offensive content and trolls, but there are also gems of valuable knowledge — and even information that can save a life. When Reddit user CappnPoopdeck posted a rage comic in 2012 on the experiences of a male friend who had jokingly taken a pregnancy test and gotten a positive result, he intended the post as entertainment for the masses. Instead, various commenters alerted him the test could be an indication of cancer. The most popular response read, “If this is true, you should check yourself for testicular cancer. Seriously. Google it.” Pregnancy tests produce a positive result upon the detection of the hormone chorionic gonadotropin, which is produced not only by pregnant women but also by men with testicular tumors. CappnPoopdeck’s friend visited the doctor and found a small tumor in his right testicle.

Avery Fitzgerald is only 2, but his mother noticed something about him that gave her an ill feeling. Julie Fitzgerald explained that whenever she saw him in certain lighting, she noticed something strange about one of his eyes. After taking a picture of him, Julie realized one of his pupils was entirely white, instead of the typical red-eye seen in most flash photography. It turned out to be retinoblastoma. 75% of Avery’s eye was covered in tumors, and it had to be removed. Doctors said if they had waited too much longer, his cancer could have spread.

The cohost of HGTV series Flip or Flop, Tarek El Moussa, has been battling thyroid cancer since 2013 and has a fan to thank for helping him find out about his illness. Ryan Read is that fan. She’s also a trained nurse. When Read spotted a lump on El Moussa’s neck during an episode, she contacted the production company. According to the Independent, she sent an email saying “This is not a joke. I’m a registered nurse. I’ve been watching ‘ Flip or Flop.’ I noticed that Tarek has a large nodule on his thyroid, and he needs to have it checked out.” The email prompted El Moussa to get a biopsy of the lump, which he was previously told was benign. That’s when he found out that he had thyroid cancer, which had spread to his lymph nodes. Thanks to the eagle-eyed Read, El Moussa was able to catch the illness before it spread farther. He had the nodule removed and after receiving treatment, he’s now in remission.

A mom was in for a shock after doctors told her what was under a birthmark which exploded during pregnancy. Mother-of-five Sam Davies had lived with the blemish on her forehead all her life. Despite being bullied about the mark by schoolmates who called her “the unicorn,” she thought nothing more of it. However, after the blemish burst, the 31-year-old discovered there were THREE cancerous tumors underneath. Doctors carried out life-saving surgery that left part of her skull exposed. She later confirmed she isn’t planning on having any more children “just in case the monster wakes up again.”

Maureen Burns in Rugby, England has a 10-year-old mixed breed collie named Max, who saved her life. The 64-year-old realized something was wrong when Max started acting strangely. He kept sniffing Maureen’s breath and nudging her right breast. Max’s odd behavior prompted Maureen to check her breasts, and she discovered a small lump in the right one, but the growth did not show up on a hospital mammogram. Still convinced that something was wrong, she persuaded surgeons to do a biopsy. Maureen’s hunch was proved right when the results confirmed there was a lump — and it was malignant. She’s had surgery to remove it followed by radiation treatment, and her prognosis is excellent. Mrs. Burns is convinced that she is alive today because of her dog’s keen sense of smell.

A woman who thought she was pregnant has been left devastated after her “baby bump” turned out to be an 11lb tumor. Heartbroken Madalina Neagu, 42, thought she was in labor when she arrived at the hospital with severe pain in her abdomen. After carrying out emergency tests, doctors from Botosani County Hospital in Romania were stunned to find a large tumor inside her uterus. Neagu had complex emergency surgery lasting several hours to remove the tumor and she is expected to make a full recovery.

What Season Where You Born In (Part 1)
1. Affects Your Neurotransmitters
The season in which you were born can greatly influence your neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin at birth, which can carry into adult life. These neurotransmitters are responsible for your mood.

2. Spring Babies
Babies that are born in the spring tend to have what is called a hyperthymic temperment which is the tendency to be positive.

Summer Babies
Those babies born in the summer months were also hyperthymic but also cyclothymic, which contributes to mood swings. So while these people tend to be positive, they also swing between being positive and experiencing negative feelings or having a negative outlook.

3. Fall Babies
Babies born during the autumn months tend to be more depressive than bbies born in all the other months, and surprisingly that includes the winter months.

4. Winter Babies
The most shocking findings were that of the winter babies temperament. These people experienced the least irritable moods of all the seasonal births.

5. Foods And Nutrients
One of the reasons that the season of you birth may affect your overal temperament is the available foods at that time of year. A baby born in the spring and summer has a wide array of fruits and vegetables available in most states, whiel those born in winter experience “out of season” fruits and vegetables. This affects the nutrients that the babies are getting and can having a lasting effect on mood.

6. Seasonal Affective Disorder
It is said that seasonal affective disorder is linked to a polymorphism in the serotonin transporter gene. Serotonin is responsible for keeping us happy. Those who suffer from depression are lacking serotonin in the brain, which anti-depressants address by prohibiting the uptake receptors from removing serotonin from the brain.

7. Timing
Studies show that babies born in January are typically born to unwed or poor parents, typically teens, suggesting that January falls 9 months after prom season. These babies are born into a darker world all around. Daylight hours are fewer, finances are an issue, and healthy fruits and vegetables are not as available during these months. In contrast, babies born in the winter months are typically born bigger and stronger than their warm weather counterparts. The reason? Mom was able to eat more nutritionally with rich fruits and vegetables being in abundance.

Being stabbed by a knife attached to your own cockfighting chicken during a match (Jose Luis Ochoa in 2011).

Forget heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming about 600,000 lives a year. We just found some absolutely bizarre ways you could die. We’re not saying you’re in any immediate danger of being killed by any of these situations, but it has happened before…
The worst part about these ways you may kick the bucket? You’ll never, ever see any of these coming. They’re that strange.

Overdosing on carrot juice (Basil Brown in 1974).

Getting hit by a flying lawnmower during a football halftime show (John Bowen in 1979).

Falling out of a window you threw yourself against to prove the glass was unbreakable (Gary Goy in 1993).

Inventing the Segway… then driving it off a cliff (Jimi Heselden in 2010).

Accidentally launching a missile at yourself (HMS Trinidad).

Reading your own obituary and dying from shock (Marcus Garvey in 1940).

Being bitten by a domesticated monkey (Alexander I of Greece in 1920).

Shooting yourself while showing a jury how a victim could have shot himself (Clement Vallandigham in 1871).

Getting shot by a cannonball that was fired in honor of your not dying in battle (John Kendrick in 1794).

Eating too much at a feast held in your honor (Julien Offray de La Mettrie).

Getting an infection because you were scratched by the teeth of your enemy’s decapitated head while riding your horse (Sigurd the Mighty of Orkney in 892).

Being beaten to death by your own wooden leg (Sir Arthur Aston in 1649).

Starving in your own house that you were stuck in because you were a hoarder (Homer Collyer in 1947).

Being the first human killed by a robot, because a factory robot’s arm fell and hit you on the head (Robert Williams in 1979).

Having a heart attack during a scene of a play where your character is having a heart attack (Gareth Jones in 1958).

Being smothered to death by gifts given to you by fans (Draco the Athenian lawmaker in 620 BC).

Ingesting pills of mercury, hoping it’d grant you eternal life (Qin Shi Huang, the first Emperor of China, in 210 BC).

Breaking your neck by tripping over your beard (Hans Steininger in 1567).

Eating too many cockroaches during a cockroach eating contest (Edward Archbold in 2012).

Being crushed by a cow that fell through your roof (Joao Maria de Souza in 2013).

Trying to launch yourself into the sky by sitting on a chair with rockets attached (Wang Hu, a sixteeth century Chinese official).

Using a coat as a parachute while jumping off of the Eiffel Tower (Franz Reichelt in 1911).

Drowning at a New Orleans “No Drowning This Year” party (Jerome Moody in 1985).

Each of these bizarre occurrences were real reasons why people died. They had no idea this would happen (and most of them are pretty ironic). Don’t think you’re safe just because you don’t smoke, drink or play with fire. A loaf of bread could be your undoing.
