Richard Gadd

Creator and star of the Netflix surprise hit Baby Reindeer never watched his own show. He said that when it came out he played it on Netflix, hit mute, and left the room to bump up the plays without having to watch it.

Rupert Grint

Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter movies, never watched past movie number three. I wonder what made him stop there? Well, it was as good a place to stop as any, they’re mostly downhill from there.

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon not only doesn’t watch her own movies, but also doesn’t remember much about them. In an interview, she said “I have absolute amnesia about every movie I have ever made. I won’t watch them because if I did I would spiral into a state of self-hate,”

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow absolutely detests seeing herself on the big screen. In an interview, she said “I also really hate, hate, hate seeing myself in a movie ever.”

Nicole Kidman

Nicole Kidman has only seen Moulin Rouge and Australia. Those are an interesting two movies to choose out of her long and accomplished filmography. Not even Eyes Wide Shut? Oh well, whatever floats your boat, Nicole.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp says that once he’s done acting in a movie, he “stay[s] as far away as [he] possibly can.” He really doesn’t like watching himself. Or maybe the Tim Burton stuff just really creeps him out.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie revealed in an interview that she greatly prefers the process of making her movies to watching them. She also said that she does watch Brad Pitt’s movies. Well, probably not anymore, I’d have to imagine.

Joaquin Phoenix

The only two movies that Joaquin Phoenix has both appeared in and watched were The Master and Her. He said he thought he was mature enough to watch them and learn from mistakes. But apparently he didn’t end up being mature enough, because he hasn’t watched any others.

Andrew Garfield

The star of The Amazing Spider-Man is afraid that if he watches his own performances on screen, he will “kill a magic he doesn’t want to understand too clearly.” Whatever you say, Peter Parker!

Helena Bonham Carter

Helena Bonham Carter says she’s never seen a single one of her TV or film projects. She gave an interesting line of reasoning, saying “It’s not like I am going to do exactly the same part next year, so what’s the point?”

Jesse Eisenberg

In an interview, Jesse Eisenberg said “I don’t watch anything I’ve been in, and I don’t read reviews or analysis of movies I’ve been in, or my plays.” He really covers all the bases! Jesse, if you really haven’t seen The Social Network, you’re missing out.

Adam Driver

Adam Driver doesn’t watch his own movies ever since seeing himself in HBO’s Girls and being ‘mortified’. He said “I certainly can’t watch this if we’re going to continue doing it.” He attended a showing of BlacKkKlansman, but hid in the green room while it played.

Emma Stone

Emma Stone never watched her movie Easy A, which helped make her popular. She said she’s seen scattered scenes, but she “went to a friends and family screening to see it, and [she] had to get up and walk out.”

Andrew Lincoln

Andrew Lincoln never watched himself as Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead. He gave multiple reasons, with the main being that he just doesn’t like looking at himself.

Javier Bardem

Javier Bardem doesn’t like to see himself on screen. He was surprisingly self-deprecating about it, saying “The fact that I like to make characters doesn’t mean that I like to watch my characters being made, my performance. I can’t even watch that f****** nose, that f****** voice, those ridiculous eyes. I can’t handle that,”

Al Pacino

Al Pacino says he doesn’t usually go back to watch his old movies. He says if the movie is good you can feel proud, but if it’s bad he’ll just try to forget it. He also says he’ll make an exception and watch if one of his old movies is on TV, which seems to defeat the point.

Harry Hamlin

Harry Hamlin played an attorney for five seasons on L.A. Law from 1986 to 1991, racking up three Golden Globe nominations. But he didn’t watch the show until 2023. When he finally did, he said “It’s amazing!”

Julianne Moore

Julianne Moore says she hasn’t seen any of her own movies. She prefers the thrill of acting itself, not seeing the finished product. She says she can’t even sit through a premiere of a movie that she’s been in.

Jared Leto

Despite winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto has never seen the movie. He said, “It can never live up to the expectations I would have of it now because it was such a beautiful experience and the response that it got was really wonderful.”

Tom Hanks

Tom Hanks believes that watching his own movies is a “horrible mistake”. He says that it doesn’t teach you what to do but rather what not to do, and that old movies don’t change so there’s no point in watching them.

Ellen Pompeo

We don’t blame the Grey’s Anatomy star for not keeping up with the show; the long-running series has over 400 episodes at the time of writing this. I don’t think even people who didn’t star in it have watched most of the episodes.

There’s actually been some rare instances where the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has has to revoke or disqualify a nominee, due to someone making a mistake. Sometimes is all on the Academy, but other times, it’s the filmmakers that have goofed it, and need to live with the shame of being so close, yet so far, to an Oscar. Leo knows how you feel.

Luckily for them, there’s only been a handful of times this has happened.

The Circus (1928)
Nominated for Best Actor, Best Writer, Best Director for a Comedy & Outstanding Picture
At the very first Academy Awards ceremony held in 1928, Charlie Chaplin was up for four (out of the total of 12) of the awards. Convinced and afraid that he would win all of them, the Academy revoked his individual nominations and instead presented him with an “Honorary Award” for his contributions to writing, acting, directing and producing The Circus.

So even though the guy was talented enough to write, act, direct and make a film happen, instead of walking away with 4 statues, he didn’t get any. Doesn’t seem fair.

Stout Hearts and Willing Hands (1931)
Best Live Action Short Film, Comedy
In the 5th edition of the Academy Awards, this short comedy film was listed as one of the nominees, but between the announcement and the final voting, the film was disqualified and replaced by another RKO Radio short called “Scratch As Scratch Can.”

There’s no documentation as to why the film was disqualified and no one can say why. It’s an Academy Awards mystery.

Hondo (1953)
Best Motion Picture Story
In 1954, this epic John Wayne western was nominated for Best Motion Picture Story, but was shortly disqualified after the announcement was made. The reason given was that the author and screenwriter of the film Louis L’Amour had published a short story previously called “The Gift of Cochise.” As it wasn’t an original work written for the film, it was deemed ineligible.

Sorry Pilgrim.

High Society (1955)
Best Motion Picture Story
Known to be the last film of Grace Kelly before she became the Princess of Monaco, High Society was initially up for Best Motion Picture Story, and the two writers Edward Bernds and Elwood Ullman were to receive it. Except the Academy made a few mistakes. One; this musical comedy was based off of an earlier 1940 film called ‘A Philadelphia Story.’ The second reason was that they got the writers all wrong. Berns and Ullman didn’t write this 1956 film, but a 1955 Bowery Boys comedy of the same name (which was a series of films about a group of characters in New York City).

As the Academy confused the two movies, they had to admit the mistake and the two writers willingly took themselves off of the ballot.

Young Americans (1967)
Award for Best Documentary
This was an actual case where the Oscar was awarded, then taken away a month later. It was discovered that this documentary about a choir had played in a theatre in October of 1967, making it ineligible for the 1968 awards season. The award was then given to the runners up.

This is the only case where the award was actually given, then taken away after the ceremony.

The Godfather (1972)
Best Original Dramatic Score
During the 1973 awards, Francis Ford Coppola’s epic crime drama was up for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor for Marlon Brando, walking away with 3.

Originally, however, there was an additional category it was up for; Best Original Dramatic Score, but the accolade was rescinded when the Academy found out that composer Nino Rota used some of his own score from the 1958 Italian comedy ‘Fortunella.’ He ended up winning the Oscar two years later for the score for ‘The Godfather Part. II.’

It sounded the same to me, but that’s why they’re the Academy and I’m just a guy who loves watching moves and getting popcorn butter all over my favourite shirts.

The 1973 Awards were also notable for ‘The Godfather’ bringing up this little incident, where Marlon Brando sent Sacheen Littlefeather to accept his award and condemn Hollywood’s treatment of American Indians.

As she wasn’t the actual winner and Brando wasn’t coming, presenter Roger Moore took the trophy home until an armed guard came to take it.

Closest he’s come to an Oscar.

A Place in the World (1992)
Best Foreign Language Film
This film was submitted by Uruguay as their official selection for the 65th Academy Awards in 1993. It was one of 5 films that got the final nomination, but was later taken off the ballot as it was, in actuality, an Argentine film. Apparently, director Adolfo Aristarain asked the neighbouring Uruguay to submit the film (as it’s a smaller country, so it might be regarded as a more notable achievement), and while some Uruguayans were a part of the film, and it was partly financed by the country, there wasn’t enough participation by Uruguay to make it legit. So because the submission was deceptive, the nomination was revoked.

Tuba Atlantic (2010)
Best Live Action Short Film
Tuba Atlantic is a 25-minute short film from Norway, about a 70-year-old man who only has six days to live and spends that time reconciling with his family. It’s actually a really moving and powerful film and really deserved recognition. While it was nominated in 2012, the film was taken out of competition due to the fact that it aired on Norwegian television before its theatrical release, which goes against the Academy’s rules.

Oops.

Alone Yet Not Alone (2013)
Best Original Song
In 2014, the title song from this Christian film was nominated for Best Original Song. Two weeks after the announcement was made, it was disqualified. The Academy discovered that the song’s composer, Bruce Broughton, was a member of the executive committee of the Academy’s musical branch. Since he had access to the emails of everyone else on the committee, he emailed the other 239 members to remind them about his film during the voting period.

That’s definitely against the rules. He misused his position and it backfired on him.

Sucks to be so close to a golden statue, only to have it taken away so abruptly.

The post As it turns out, you can get an Oscar nomination revoked appeared first on Barnorama.

Best Actor nominee Dev Patel had to develop a new physique to portray Saroo in Lion and attended several hours in the gym in order inhabit his part. He also grew a beard and developed an Australian accent (with Tasmanian dialect), visited Saroo Brierley’s orphanage in India and wrote a diary while he took the original train ride that Brierley accidentally took as a young child. In total, he spent eight months preparing for the role.

When Taraji P. Henson signed on for the lead role in Hidden Figures, she met with the real-life Katherine Johnson, who was 98 years old, to discuss the character she was about to portray. Henson learned that Johnson had graduated from high school at age 14 and from college at age 18, and was still as lucid as anyone years younger. After the film was screened for Johnson, she expressed her genuine approval of Henson’s portrayal, but wondered why anybody would want to make a film about her life.

In an interview, Best Director nominee Barry Jenkins said that the three actors who play Chiron in Moonlight never met during production. He wanted each of them to build their own persona of Chiron during their respective segments, with no influence from the other portrayals. The same technique was used with the actors who play Kevin.

Most of the big musical numbers in La La Land were recorded after they were filmed, but Best Actress nominee Emma Stone said that her more intimate songs like “City of Stars” and “Audition” were recorded totally live to capture the feeling of raw authenticity.

Bonus fact: Emma Stone wasn’t the first person offered the role of Mia. Emma Watson actually turned down the character before Stone took on the role. Wonder how Watson feels about that now?

If he wins, Damien Chazelle will be the youngest Best Director winner in history at 32 years old. He actually worked on La La Land for over six years after he came up with the idea while studying at Harvard in 2010.

The film is loosely based on his own struggles to make it as an artist, so it’s not surprising that when he was met with big-time restrictions and requests while trying to make it, Chazelle dropped the project. Once his film Whiplash did so well in 2014, the studio decided to let him make La La Land however he wanted.

Kubo and the Two Strings is the second fully animated film to be nominated in the visual effects category. The first was The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), which lost to Jurassic Park.

Instead of using CGI or a hands double, Best Actor nominee Ryan Gosling actually trained himself to become a very skilled jazz pianist for his role in La La Land. He became so good that co-star John Legend was jealous of his natural ability.

Best Picture nominee Fences was originally a 1987 Broadway play. It was revived in 2010, and the leading actors were none other than Best Actor nominee Denzel Washington and Best Supporting Actress nominee Viola Davis.

Speaking of Viola Davis, she isn’t a stranger to the Oscars. It is, however a little surprising that she’s nominated for Best Supporting Actress instead of Best Actress. Director and co-star Denzel Washington apparently disagrees with her category placement, but it turns out that Davis actually decided to be placed there because she thought she’d have a better chance of winning if she campaigned her performance in the supporting category.

Andrew Garfield is nominated for Best Actor for his role in Hacksaw Ridge, where he plays army medic Desmond T. Doss, the first American to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a single shot. Doss’s real-life son was in the audience for the premiere and said he was moved to tears by Garfield’s performance.

Best Supporting Actress nominee Michelle Williams has been in plenty of successful films, but it wasn’t until Manchester by the Sea that she actually felt like a good actress. She has said that after filming scenes with Casey Affleck, she felt like she had finally turned in her first truly great days of acting in her career.

With a running time of 7 hours 47 minutes, best documentary feature nominee “O.J.: Made in America” is the longest film ever nominated for an Academy Award.

With 14 nominations, “La La Land” ties the record held by “All About Eve” (1950) and “Titanic” (1997). “Titanic” won 11 awards, tying it for the winningest film along with “Ben Hur” (1959) and “The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” (2003).

Who will win big? Find out on Februrary 26th.

The post Old stars mashed up with their young characters appeared first on Barnorama.

Tim Burton originally wrote the story in poem form while he was an animator at Disney. He really hated that job, by the way. “I couldn’t draw those four-legged Disney foxes. I just couldn’t do it,” he said. “I couldn’t even fake the Disney style. Mine looked like roadkills.”

Anyways, after his stint as an animator he kept in touch with another animator who didn’t quite fit the Disney mold, Henry Selick. Burton showed Selick his creepy poem about a skeleton-type dude named Jack Skellington, and Selick immediately wanted to direct a feature version. They recruited “Beetlejuice” co-writer Michael McDowell and set upon creating the film in 1991.

Don’t doubt that the stop-motion animation is any easier than the modern CGI we see today. The film was shot at 24 frames per second, meaning the characters had to be re-positioned 24 times for EVERY second of the movie. One week of work equalled one minute of movie. It took more than three years to complete.

The antagonist Oogie Boogie wasn’t just an antagonist for the characters. He also caused the animators a lot of trouble by being the hardest character to create. Director Henry Selick admitted that the scene where Oogie is unraveled and spills his insect insides everywhere was only four shots but it took a full month to create.

Since stop-motion is so time-consuming, Selick and his team really wanted to get a jumpstart as soon as possible. So much so that they didn’t even have a complete script when production began. In fact, Selick only had a few songs to work with: “We had three songs by Danny Elfman but no real screenplay, and we had to start because we had a pretty tight budget, and had to finish the movie in time. So we started off with the song “What’s This?” Selick said.

Danny Elfman himself sang all of Jack Skellington’s musical numbers in the final cut, which most people know. But the lesser-known fact is that he also recorded all of the speaking parts for the Pumpkin King. Selick didn’t like his version of Jack’s voice and expressed this to Burton. The two decided to go with Chris Sarandon for the dialogue, and Elman took it so badly that he refused to score Burton’s next film, “Ed Wood.”

Although Elfman still voiced characters like the Clown with the Tear Away Face and Barrel, the smallest of Oogie Boogie’s henchman, he still wasn’t happy. He had the animatos create a shrunken head that looked like him and hide it inside a cello.

Tim Burton was also supposed to have a brief cameo where skating vampires play ice hockey on a frozen lake with his head. The theory as to why this didn’t make it in the film is that Disney didn’t quite like the idea of having the head of a former employee in the movie and made Selick change it. The footage has since been released.

The biggest twist in the early footage was that when Oogie Boogie’s sack unravels, Doctor Finklestein is actually inside, and he kidnapped Sally because he was jealous that she chose Jack instead of him. He goes on to call Jack an “oblivious twit” and says he wanted to “teach Sally a lesson” before he disappears through a trap door.

The opening and closing monologues of the film were a pain to cast. Vincent Price, Burton’s idol, was supposed to narrate the film, and he even came into the studio to record. However he was so upset after his wife passed away that they were forced to find someone else. Burton and Selick had talks with Don Ameche, who proved to be too “grouchy” for Santa. Then James Earl Jones met with Elfman, but it only ended in an angry shouting match. Ed ivory won the role, even though he was a relative unknown with no experience.

Tim Burton’s original poem was supposed to play a bigger role in the film. The words were supposed to be read at length over the course of the movie… and they were supposed to be read by Patrick Stewart. Stewart recorded an entire film’s worth adaptation of the poem, but the movie evolved in a different direction and Stewarts parts were cut to only the opening and closing scenes, which were later changed to be spoken by Santa.

In a cut epilogue, Santa visits Jack years later and finds that the Pumpkin King had a bunch of kids who had the musical touch:

“And though that one Christmas things got out of hand, I’m still rather fond of that skeleton man,” recalled Santa. “So many years later I thought I’d drop in, and there was old Jack still looking quite thin, with four or five skeleton children at hand, playing strange little tunes in their xylophone band.”

The outspoken Wilder might’ve been best known for his role as Willy Wonka in Mel Stuart’s film, “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory”. Before filming started, Gene went so far as to write a letter to Stuart expressing his vision of his character’s costume in the film.

Check out the letter below.

The original letter.

Thank you, Gene. For everything.

Imgur user spl33nix created an impressive Immortan Joe cosplay. She will surely be awaited in Valhalla.

Front acrylic right out of the vacuformer.

Finished acrylic form.

Cutout the front piece (used a tank top as a template).

Riveted the chest and back piece to attach the two pieces together by using leather twine to “corset” the sides.

Test fitting the mask with the wig.

Finished paint job on the flaming skull for the codpiece.

3D printed medals painted with a mixture or spray paint and model paints.

Cut out belt for holsters and riveted belt loops onto holsters.

Finished weathered holster, belt, and guns. Medals in the progress of being attached to their ribbons.

Added chains and a spark plug the the chest piece.

Just thinking of the Lost Boy’s crazy antics or Robin Williams believing in NeverLand, and even Captain Hook’s hatred for clocks, you can’t help but to have that overwhelming sense of nostalgia. Almost makes me want to head to my parents’ house and dust off the VHS player and watch it all over again.
