Last week marked the 60th anniversary of the opening of the first McDonald’s in Des Plaines, Illinois. To promote the opening, Ray Kroc took out an ad in the Des Plaines journal advertising the low prices. It worked, and Kroc’s restaurant took in $366.12 in the first day.

You’ve probably already heard about the dispute that’s virtually frozen the flow of cargo into the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, leaving cargo ships and trucks without anywhere to go. But seeing it from the air is something else entirely.

Mike Kelley, an LA photographer with an interest in infrastructure and urbanism, was flying into LAX on a commercial flight last weekend when he saw dozens of ships anchored offshore, waiting to offload their cargo when the dispute between the port and the longshoreman that’s halted work at the ports is resolved.

“I saw all of these giant container ships anchored offshore and instantly knew that I had to photograph it,” he writes on his blog. “It was one of the most exciting experiences I’ve had doing aerial photography — being that far out at sea, with the huge swells underneath you, and these massive, massive container ships everywhere was like living a scene out of Walter Mitty’s life.”

Kelley says that the ‘copter was so far out at sea, the swells were “enormous”, even from the air. But they were still dwarfed by the size of the cargo ships themselves: “The size of these ships blows the mind; many of them are over a thousand feet long,” he says. It’s amazing to think about just how many of our belongings arrived on one of these enormous ships — a problem at one port could mean a problem in hundreds of stores around the country.

Despite all our advanced shipbuilding and navigation tech, sailing through Arctic or Antarctic waters can still treacherous — as an Australian fishing boat discovered after it got stuck in in the ice this week. Today, the US Coastal Guard’s icebreaker, Polar Star, came to the rescue.

Polar Star has been around since the 1970s, and it is a tank. With a 5cm-thick steel hull and incredibly powerful engines, it’s still doing what it was built to do four decades ago: Cutting through thick ice to do everything from saving stranded vessels to delivering supplies to McMurdo Station by clearing a path to the station — as seen in the AP photo above from late January.

This week, Polar Star was assigned a different task: Rescuing the Antarctic Chieftain seen above, a vessel with a crew of 26 that was stranded in the ice with badly damaged propellers. According to the LA Times, Polar Star reached the trapped boat today — and is now towing it out of the ice floes to safety.

Nadine passed away shortly before Christmas in 1933 at just 4 years-old. Apparently locals mentioned that Nadine wanted a dollhouse for Christmas that year.
