Using a paring knife and working at an angle, cut around one end of an oval watermelon to create a lid, then scoop out the fruit with a metal spoon. With a clean screwdriver, poke a hole about a third of the way up the watermelon, then use a paring knife to make it slightly smaller than your spigot (Stainless Works Beverage Spigot, $13.95; Amazon.com). Gently screw in the spigot so it fits snugly. Handwrite ” Enjoy” above the spigot in permanent marker, then use a linoleum cutter to trace the letters and etch away the skin.

Benedict Cumberbatch may not have won this year’s Oscar, but he did win a poll sponsored by UKTV. Cumberbatch beat out a long list of British actors for this honor (I think that’s what they’re calling this) like Idris Elba, Sean Bean and Damian Lewis to be made into a life size mound of chocolate.

The lead sculptor Tim Simpson said,
“You can’t rush perfection. Benedict has such a distinctive look that it was a challenge but a pleasure, to recreate him in chocolate. A secret combination of methods ensured we got a great likeness – we’re sure his legion of fans will approve!”

But it wasn’t just all fun and chocolate for the sculptors:
“The striking thing about Benedict is that he’s got quite a thin face but he’s got a large head,” Simpson, said. “So trying to get that look right is quite tricky.”

She also receives many orders for sculptures of special dogs who have passed away – she believes a dog sculpture is an unique way to remember and honor a beloved companion.

She uses people’s photos to create custom dog sculptures

To make these felt dogs, I start by building a wire armature.

She uses dog breed guidelines and figures of dog skeletons to create a wire “skeleton” to build her sculpture on

She pays special attention to each dog’s unique characteristics, such as coat color, patterns, and markings

Her ultimate goal is to create a miniature replica of that particular dog

Because her sculptures contain wire armatures, the dogs are completely poseable- they can be posed into multiple positions

Each dog takes approximately two to three weeks to complete

Ellen Jewett, a talented sculptor based in Canda, creates unbelievably detailed and delicate-looking handmade clay sculptures of creatures that look like they’d be right at home in our wildest dreams (or nightmares)

Ellen says her inspiration comes “from animal physiology and a love of the fantastic, grotesque and absurd. Each sculpture is handmade and painted with no more tools than fingers and a paint brush. The process begins with a handmade metal armature over which light weight clay is sculpted. The painting is executed with acrylic, mineral and oil pigments and the embedded eyes are glass. When complete the whole piece is glazed to intensify colour and strength.”

Another interesting touch is that she avoids using any toxic materials; “This, unavoidably, excludes most of what is commonly commercially available, and has sent me on a journey of unique material combination and invention.”

Also featured in this exhibit are pieces from Yuansu II, in which Ren has created a series of stunning geometrical sculptures by manipulating bee behavior.

Ren begins by places a queen bee in the middle of a box, while the worker bees start to build natural beehives around her. Every seven days, a reference to the seven days of creation, Ren randomly changes the position of the box, like rolling dice, to create a new living object.

Artist Augusto Esquivel creates sculptures using not only an unexpected medium, but also an unexpected way of using them. To create his life-sized, three-dimensional pieces, he uses buttons and thread. But he doesn’t sew the buttons to anything. Oh no. Instead, Esquivel hangs the buttons on the thread to create a 3D sculpture using nothing but meticulously sorted colored buttons.

Esquivel’s sculptures explore appearance and expectation versus reality, with the strings of buttons masquerading as a solid, substantial objects. But in reality, they’re just a fragile arrangement of parts.

Esquival’s sculptures run the gamut from still life objects of varying sizes to miniature landscapes to abstract forms. He can even create portraits using strands of buttons hung in a two-dimensional, curtain-like arrangement. Even though on their own they might seem insignificant, the buttons come together, each one playing a vital role in the final product. “Like an atom in a molecule, each button serves and shapes the whole,” Esquival explains on his site.

Well, that’s really darn impressive. Who knew the Japanese Self Defense Force had such excellent crafting skills? After seeing this marvellous creation, consider yourself educated.

The sculpture was put together by the SDF’s 11th Brigade for this year’s Sapporo Snow Festival. According to Quartz’s Anne Quito, the SDF has provided its services to the festival for almost 60 years. This particular piece featuring Darth Vader, a TIE fighter and even a glowing red lightsabre took around a month to make.

Photos of the process below:

I’m going to assume it won’t stay up forever; the festival itself ends on the 11th, at which point I’m sure it’ll become a giant pile of snow again.

Benjamin started working with graphite and soon made his first works measuring only couple of millimeters. He tried to go as small as he can making a figure of a one millimeter man sitting on a cube. Most of his work Benjamin does with the naked eye, his eyes are trained to see incredibly small structures.

Deep in the woods of southern France, artist Spencer Byles transformed the forest into a mysterious wonderland through a series of spectacular, organic sculptures. Byles spent a year immersed in the woodlands of La Colle sur Loup, Villeneuve-Loubet, and Mougins for this ambitious project. Surrounded by flora and fauna, the sculptor used only cables and natural, found materials to create his stunning, large-scale works of art.
