These bridges are some pretty cool feats of engineering and ingenuity and they’re definitely not run of the mill.

Lucky Knot Bridge
Changsha, China
Opened to the public late last year, this bridge was designed to evoke the principles of the mobius ring and the traditional Chinese folk art of knotting. It’s 606 feet long and 78 feet high, and that 3 footpaths that wind up and down, connecting two parks and offering some surreal views of the river and landscape.

I’m dizzy just looking at it.

Island in the Mur
Graz, Austria
It’s kind of hard to just classify this structure as just a bridge, as it’s also an island and floating entertainment centre. This steel and glass structure links the two banks of the Mur river, and while it allows people to get from one end to the other, in the middle, you’ve got an artificial island, that looks like a half-opened seashell. There you’ll find a floating cafe, children’s playground and an amphitheatre with wavy benches for a waterside concert under the stars.

It also looks badass at night.

Eshima Ohashi Bridge
Japan
For this bridge, it’s all about perspective. While it looks like the steep incline of a roller coaster, the bridge is a mile long, linking the cities of Matsue and Sakaiminato. While it looks like an insane incline, it’s actually an optical illusion. One side of the bridge has a 6.1% grade, while the other has a 5.1% grade. When you look at it from the side, it’s a gentle rise, but from the front/back, it looks dangerously steep.

You just can’t judge a bridge by its angle.

Octavio Frias de Oliviera Bridge
Brazil
This is a cable-stayed bridge in Sao Paulo, over the Pinheiros River. It’s the only X shaped bridge in the world that’s stabilized by cables, and during the months of November and December the cables are strung with lights to create a coloured christmas tree.

Python Bridge
The Netherlands
This is one of the most unusual bridges in Amsterdam, and for a city known for it’s bridges, that says a lot. It evokes the movement of a snake, or the curled smoke from a finely crafted joint.

Dragon Bridge, Vietnam
Vietnam
Anywhere you go in Asia, you’re going to see dragons. It’s a symbol of power and fortune, and when it came time to design a new bridge in Da Nang, the most logical choice was to make it dragon-themed. This 2,185 foot-long bridge is made of steel and literally breathes fire from its mouth. Every Saturday and Sunday at 9pm, is a spectacular show of lights and flames, making it one of the most badass bridges on this list.

Falkirk Wheel
Scotland
This one isn’t technically a ‘bridge’ per se, but it’s a pretty cool piece of engineering and artistry, with a little bit of WTF thrown in. This is a rotating boat elevator, that connects various canals in Scotland. The wheel raises boats up by 79 feet, but then they still need to float along an aqueduct until they hit a series of locks to get to the top of the canal.

Never thought I’d type the words ‘boat elevator.’

‘Infinite Bridge’
Denmark
This is a bridge that doesn’t go anywhere, really. But somehow, it’s still considered a bridge. This was built to celebrate the scenic coastal landscape in Aarhus, Denmark and is a circular, walkable structure that allows people to walk from the shore to the sea. It’s about 623 feet in circumference and 197 feet in diameter, so it’s pretty big.

Living Root Bridges
India
There’s a type of tree in Meghalaya, India that the locals use to build bridges, turning nature into their advantage. They train the roots of a rubber fig tree to grow along channels in the ground and across rivers using the hollowed out trunk of a betel nut tree. Once the roots hit the soil on the other side, they take root. It can take close to a decade for the bridge to become fully functional, but once it does, it’s incredibly strong.

Oresund Bridge
Sweden and Denmark
The opening of this bridge was a game-changer. It allowed for a non-stop route between mainland Europe and Sweden a reality. It’s not just a bridge, however – it’s a bridge, artificial island and tunnel. Since they needed to allow for ships to pass through, and have an un-impeeded approach to the Kastrup Airport in Denmark, a tunnel was the way to go.

It’s a pretty gnarly piece of infrastructure.

Circular Laguna Garson Bridge
Uruguay
Located on the southern coast of Uruguay, this ring-shaped bridge was constructed to replace a raft crossing between the two cities of Rocha and Maldonado. The design is to ensure that drivers slow down when crossing, and they’ve built in some pedestrian walkways to take in the view of the lagoon. The original raft system that was in place only allowed for 2 cars to cross the lagoon at one time and didn’t run in bad weather, but now, over 1,000 vehicles are able to pass at one time. The hope this this easy passageway will allow future development on the coasts of these two cities.

The Rolling Bridge
England
When it comes to designing bridges that need to move out of the way, this bridge designer kept things simple and looked to the pillbug for inspiration. When the ships need to come through the Grand Union Canal, the bridge rolls away. When someone needs to cross, it gently unfolds across the canal.

Once unrolled completely, it looks like a pretty regular bridge.

Gateshead Millennium Bridge
England
This bridge opened in 2001, and people haven’t stopped marvelling at it. It’s a tiling structure, with a pedestrian and cyclist bridge on one side, and a supporting curve on the other, both fixed to a pivot. When a ship needs to pass through, the curves tilt up.

Like this. According to the designers, it’s meant to have a rotation much like a slowly opening eyelid.

Lego Bridge
Wuppertal,German
I think, out of all the awesome bridges on the list, this one is my favourite. This concrete railway bridge, might look like it’s made of Lego, but that’s actually due to the talent of a graffiti artist named Martin Heuwold. Even the bosses at Lego approve. I’d hate to see one of those bricks fall and someone step on it. You thought small Lego’s hurt.

Banpo Bridge Rainbow Fountain
South Korea
According to the city of Banpo, this is the most multi-functional bridge in the world. The span, is a two-tiered bridge, with the bottom part designed to be submerged during period of high rainfall. The top bridge, was outfitted with thousands of LEDs and water jets in 2009, creating the Moonlight Rainbow Fountain. The t380 water jets shoot over 190 tons of recycled river water per minute and makes one hell of a water show.

Try to top that Bellagio fountain!

Slauerhoffbrug
Netherlands
The local nickname for this bridge is the ‘pancake flipper,’ on account of its construction. It’s the only bridge of it’s kind, called an automatic bascule bridge. It uses two arms to lift an actual section of the road out of place and move it away, so that ships can pass. When the bridge is lowered, you can’t even see the lift arms, as they blend into the surrounding structure. It’s pretty ingenious, really.

Twin Sails Bridges
Dorset, England
Opening in 2012, the Twin Sails Bridge is what’s called a “double-leaved bascule bridge,” that spans the channel in Dorset. The bridge has got two 75-foot tall triangular lifting leave that open up as much as 15 times a day, to let boats through. When they’re down in the closed position, the bridge is completely flat, but when they lift up, they look like yacht sails in the air.

It’s a pretty trippy sight to see them lifted and lit up at night. You’d never guess it’s a bridge.

The Moses bridge
The Netherlands
Why build a bridge over water, when you can build one through water? Back during the 17th century, fortresses and moats were used to protect parts of the Netherlands from French and Spanish invaders. One of the fort, Fort de Roovere, has just been restored and the designers had an idea to build a sunken bridge to help traverse the moat. This ‘invisible’ bridge is sneakily inserted into the water, and from far away, you can’t even see the retaining walls. It just looks like you’re walking through water, just like Moses. That’s my childhood dream.

The Yanomami tribe of Brazil and Venezuela takes part in a rather odd burial ritual. Well, odd for us Westerners. When a member of the tribe passes away, their body gets burned, and the ashes and bones are pounded into a powder and mixed into a soup. The people of the tribe then drink the soup. They do this because they hold the belief that by drinking the ashes of a loved one, their spirit will be with you forever. They also believe that a body that isn’t cremated will cause an angry spirit to form because it didn’t get to be with it’s loved ones.

Bullet ant gloves

The Satere-Mawe tribe of the Amazon lay claim to what is probably the most painful initiation ritual on the planet. In order to be seen as a “man” in the eyes of the tribe, you must take part in the bullet ant glove. After becoming of age, boys will travel into the jungle with a medicine man to collect bullet ants, which have the most painful bite in the world. The ants are then drugged and put into mesh gloves. Once they are awake and angry, the boys must stick their hands into these gloves for 10 minutes while they do a dance. They don’t do this just once, but 20 times before they are considered to be men.

Pomlázka Whip

In the Czech Republic, there is a tradition in which men go house to house lightly tapping women’s asses with a stick called a Pomlázka. This goes down every Easter Monday and apparently is done to help with the women’s fertility.

Cinnamon Attacks

In Denmark, if you are still single or unmarried by the time you turn 25, well…lets just say I hope you like cinnamon. Apparently, there is a tradition in Denmark where your friends and family will ambush you and throw cinnamon at you all throughout the day. It gets worse- if you’re still unmarried at 30, you’ll get covered in pepper.

The Sock Line

Here we go again with the unmarried rituals. In Germany, if you are unmarried by the time you turn 25, you can expect a long garland of socks strung from your house all the way to the venue of your birthday party. On your way there, you typically have to take a drink every few socks

Kanamara Matsuri

Is that a giant pink penis parading through the streets of Japan? Yup. Kanamara Matsuri is a festival that goes back as far as the 17th century. People dress up as penises, eat penis shaped foods, and parade with penis shaped items. Why? It’s done to honour the legend of a woman who had teeth on her vagina that ate penises until a brave man built an iron penis that broke her teeth.

Arriving Late

So, in Venezuela, if you are invited to an event at somebodies house, and you show up on time, you’re being rude. It is typically recommended that you show up approximately 15 minutes late. Why? Apparently guests who show up on time are seen as greedy and too eager.

Coal Walking

In China, there is a tradition in which a man carries his pregnant wife over burning coal with bare feet. They do this with the belief that it will help the wife have an easy delivery.

Blackening of the Bride

In Scotland, if you’re getting married, you can expect to have nasty rotten eggs, rotten fish, old milk, and other nasty shit thrown at you. You are then paraded around for everyone to see. They do this under the belief that if the couple can withstand this, they can withstand anything.

Russian Vodka

There are several rules when it comes to drinking water in Russia. Sorry, I mean Vodka. After a toast, you may not place your glass back onto the table if there’s still vodka in it. It’s toast and bottoms up. If you’re late for a dinner, you’re required to down a glass of vodka right away in order to catch up with everyone else. Also, between the first and second shots you take at dinner, there is to be no talking, only drinking. Lastly, if you ever dare to propose a toast with an empty glass, you’re forced to drink an entire bottle.

So whether or not you like to drink alone or you want to find a place where no one knows your name at the ends of the earth, here’s some of the most remote places to get shitfaced.

Don’t forget to pack some spare underwear and your passport!

The Faraday Bar at Vernadsky Research Base; Galindez Island, Antarctica
Just a small Zodiac boat ride across frigid water will get you to Galindez Island, where there’s a tiny, one room bar inside a research station. According to the lore, the bar was built by carpenters, during the time the British had stewardship of the Island, and they used wood that was supposed to be used for a new pier, and created a bar instead. Good thinking.

Currently, the station is owned by the Ukraine, and the bar inside is reminiscent of the rustic British pubs, with exposed beams and a lively atmosphere. The local drink is a Ukrainian vodka made with the local glacial ice, which will run you $3 a glass, or is free with a donation of womens underwear. Sounds like my kind of place.

Three Camel Lodge; Gobi Desert, Mongolia
This hotel is a 90 minute drive from anywhere, and it’s about as remote as it gets for a hotel in the middle of nowhere. But they have a bar, which is all you need.

It also uses traditional Mongolian building techniques and architecture, as well as offering some unique takes on alcohol that will keep you warm under the endless desert skies. Remember, as hot as it gets during the day, you’ll freeze your ass off at night, so stay drunk and don’t wander off into the sand.

Albatross Bar; Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristian Da Cunha Island
This is a small British settlement of close to 300 people that live 1,800 miles away from their closest neighbour, right beside an active volcano. Sounds like a brilliant reason to drink.

This small village was settled in 1818, at the base of the volcano as a strategic military location, and since then, this single room tap house has seen it’s share of volcanic threats and hurricanes. Surrounded by a farming community that lives with the treat of famine, disease, tropical storms and the shadow of the volcano, you can see the need for a tipple every once in a while.

If this is what you’re looking for, it’s an 8 day trip on a fishing trawler that drops off supplies and picks up the local lobster, and odds are, they’ll put you to work on the way there. But if you make it there in one piece, have a lager for me and keep an eye on that volcano.

Christian’s Cafe; Adamstown, Pitcairn Islands
There’s no way to get here by plane and the boat schedule is very sparse at best, so you have to pick your moments, if you’re looking to run away and get plastered. Pitcairn Island is one of the most remote inhabited locations on earth, with it’s closest neighbour 1,300 miles away. This volcanic rock only has 50 permanent inhabitants, uses 3 generators for all it’s electrical needs, and of course, has exactly one bar.

This is the final landing place of the H.M.S. Bounty, which was the site of a mutiny in 1790, and the bar only started serving back in 2009, to the 50 descendants of that murderous crew. It’s only open one day a week; Fridays from 6:30 until late, so plan on being there for a week or two, so you can get at least two nights of drinking in, and sleep off your hangover next to the island’s sweet tropical beaches.

Just to show you how remote Pitcairn Island is, check out this sign. Middle of nowhere. You can be an ass, get super drunk and no one will recognize you. They might kick you off the island though, so don’t take it too far.

Sunland Baobab; Sunland Ranch, South Africa
For those not familiar with the term, a Baobab is a tree indigenous to Africa, with a wide, thick trunk and a small canopy. These trees grow incredibly wide, and in the case of the tree on Sunland Ranch, becomes something to be hollowed out and turned into a bar.

This tree is 155 feet around and 75 feet high and contains a bar the size of a railway car. It’s decorated in the English Pub style and it can fit close to 20 people comfortably. It even has it’s own natural cellar to keep drinks cool.

A look at the inside, incase you were curious. This tree has been dated to over 6,000 years old. A pretty awesome place to get drunk. Last time I drank in a tree, I broke my arm; this looks safer.

Birdsville Hotel, Birdsville, Australia
The Australian Outback is one of the most unforgiving places on the planet, and leave it to an Aussie to build a bar in the middle of nowhere, so that even the most lost, can grab a pint.

At the edge of the Simpson Desert is the town of Birdsville; population 273, and this 27-room hotel/bar offers shelter and refreshments for someone looking to get out of the 100 degrees of incessant heat. Built in 1884, the bar has three areas to drink in; two traditional outback pubs and an outdoor beer garden. Even though it’s pretty remote, it’s seen it’s share of bar fights and heartbreaks.

The Old Forge; Knoydart, Scotland
While some are the most remote on this list, this one is both hard to get to and holds the title according to Guinness. Originally a blacksmith’s forge on the shore of Loch Nevis, it became a social club in WWII, then a pub in the 80s.

There is no road to this alehouse, so it’s a 12 mile walk from the nearest car stop, but there are plenty of ferries that will get you there. It’s the perfect place to leave the world behind, and with impromptu musical performances, local brews and a full menu, if you get there, you’ll never want to leave.

Forbes Island; San Francisco, California
This bar lives on a man-made island in San Francisco Bay. It could potentially be the only bar left in the world, if something were to happen to San Fran and this Island is just left to float away after an earthquake or something dramatic like that.

The island was built by a millionaire in 1975, and it contains a bar within a hut, with a lighthouse beside it and palm trees. Below the waterline is an upscale restaurant, with portholes so you can look out at the undersea life. Which could come in handy if the island is set out to sea to be the only bar for miles, in the middle of the ocean.

Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House, Banff National Park, British Columbia
After a 5km hike through the BC wilderness, out near Lake Louise, you find this rustic tea house, that actually serves more than just tea; but nice, cold Canadian beer.

Built by the Canadian National Railway in 1924, it’s a cozy and much needed waypoint in the wilderness, and a good place to just disappear into your cold brew.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Inn, Nottingham, England
This is Englands oldest Inn, and legend will tell you that the crusaders stopped here for some liquid courage, before trying to take back the Holy Land.

The bar began as a brewhouse in the 12th century and is built into the side of a castle.

Within these older chambers of the castle, monks used to ferment the ales, and the bar currently uses old rooms and castle jail cells to store their kegs. This might not be in the middle of nowhere, but this has to be one of the coolest bars in the world. Plus, I’m sure Robin Hood drank here too, and he was a badass.

Irish Pub as the Namche Bazaar, Nepal
When you’re climbing up Mount Everest, you’ve got to stop somewhere for a drink, right? This is legit, the highest bar in the world, and it’s a place to steel your nerve before making the climb.

This village is built into a steep slope, and the founder decided to call his bar ‘The Irish Pub’ and decorated it with a pool table, football and widescreen televisions, as well as the usual whiskies, drafts and even traditional sherpa alcohols to spice up your climb.

Getting here is tough, though. You need to fly into one of the worlds most dangerous airports (due to a short, sloped and perpetually frozen runway) and trek up the the village by foot, over two days to avoid altitude sickness.

But is is worth it? Drinking at an Irish pub, on the highest peak in the world, with your game on the big screen? I’d say so.

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop; New Orleans, Louisiana
Unlike the other places on the list, this bar isn’t hard to reach, but it’s one of the oldest bars in the US – open since 1722 and will most likely exist until the end of th world.

While the rest of Bourbon Street has been rebuilt and revitalized, this is the only remaining example of the French Colonial style that New Orleans was once known for. This joint has outlived crime, wars, fires and hauntings to remain as authentic as possible and you owe it to history, and to your liver, to get to falling-down-drunk-on-Bourbon-Street. Just don’t do anything sketchy for those beads… totally not worth it.

Lost Bar; Oymyakon, Russia
This is the Russian town with the lowest recorded temperature in a permanently settled establishment (-71.2C..fuck, that’s cold). So, to keep yourself warm, you need plenty of vodka. This is called the loneliest bar in the world and for a good reason. No one wants to visit, and it’s not even on the tourism map. It’s a small bar, in the middle of a frozen tundra, where drinking is the only thing that will keep you from freezing to death. Vodka is like antifreeze in your blood, so if you want to survive your isolation, keep knocking them back.

Regionally inspired gourmet meals can be prepared for you at any time and are served on Royal Doulton bone china. A flight attendant can transform your suite into a mini dining room.

Passengers can relax and enjoy a range of treats while watching movies on their interactive touch-screen TV, which doubles as a gaming system.

The controls can change the intensity and the type of massage. You can also use the interactive panel to set the ambient lighting and to open and close the doors to your private suite.

Soft drinks are provided in an automated minibar …

… but passengers can go to the bar if they fancy something a bit heavier. It serves premium spirits, exclusive wines, Champagne, and cocktails — including Dom Perignon, which retails for at least £120 per bottle. There’s enough room to stand and talk to other passengers around the bar.

And at night, the bar lights up. It also serves Hennessy Paradis, the most expensive alcohol served by any airline, starting at around £600 per bottle.

Though the £4,000 price tag may seem steep, Emirates treats its first-class passengers like royalty — and also allows them to disembark before anyone else on the plane.
