When the plane hits turbulence, the job of the flight attendants is to keep everyone calm. Landing a plane under dangerous conditions is hard enough; it probably doesn’t help the pilot at all to have 80 people freaking out in the back.

But being calm might not actually help you that much during an event in the sky.

In the event of a crash, depending on the speed of impact, it is likely your body (which is 70 percent water) will explode.

And if your body doesn’t completely explode, the plane’s explosion will surely take care of the rest.

Airplane seat belts really should have shoulder straps. During a crash at a slower-speed, shoulder straps can save lives, leaving the victims only with light bruising on the chest.

Shoulder straps would be uncomfortable, sure, but death is slightly more uncomfortable

Without a shoulder harness, the jolt of the impact may cause your 10-pound head to snap your neck. It’s possible that it may even fall off. There have been reports of waist belts severing plane crash victims in half.

Totally gonna duct tape myself to my seat next time I fly.

Seats should really be faced the other way around. Flight surgeons say the back can absorb much more shock than the chest. Rear-facing seats installed in Navy transport planes have saved lives by tenfold.

The life jackets are mainly there to help rescue crews find the bodies in the event of a crash.

Didn’t really help us much in finding Malaysia 370, however.

In the Air Force, they take foot prints because in severe crashes, the feet inside boots are the only thing left to identify soldiers with.

Sometimes, airlines cut costs by skimping on fuel, forcing planes to take off with less than the recommended amount.

But we’ve already established that airline travel is safer than it’s ever been, and American travel in particular is the safest in the world. Most accidents are survivable, and the chances of being in a plane crash are between 1 in 11 million and 1 in 60 million. Still, whenever I hit turbulence on a cross-ocean flight, I sometimes wish I took that class in aerodynamics in high school instead of zoology.

If you think skydiving sounds scary, it’s a piece of cake compared to what these two men went through. A skydiving instructor and his pupil experienced a scare unlike any other in November of 2014 during a dive over Western Australia.

Twenty-two-year-old Christopher Jones dove during a training program with the Western Australia Skydiving Academy in what was an apparently a standard jump. He exited the plane at 12,000 feet in the air. It was then when the unthinkable happened.

Everything started out fine as Jones exited the plane.

Jones began to have a seizure shortly after jumping from the plane. His instructor, Sheldon McFarlane, struggled to reach him as the two men were in free fall thousands of feet above the ground

Instructor Sheldon McFarlane watched helplessly as Jones plummeted towards the Earth.

His first attempt to grab Jones failed.

Because they were quickly dropping, McFarlane pulled his own ripcord while attempting to grab Jones again.

This time it was successful, and McFarlane was able to pull Jones’ ripcord before his own parachute opened.

New mothers don’t have it easy. They can also seem or act a little crazy to outsiders. However, one new mother in Shenzhen, China, may actually be certifiably insane for what she tried to do to her newborn son.

According to the hospital, a nurse doing her rounds allegedly caught 24-year-old new mother Li Zhenghua trying to eat her own infant child.

When the nurse saw what was happening, she got help and managed to stop Zhenghua from fully closing her jaw on the infant’s arm. However, Zhenghua refused to give up the child to the nurses. She had to be sedated and restrained to save the child.

“It was really shocking,” the hospital said in a statement. “The arm was badly damaged and suffered not only heavy bruising, but bleeding as a result of the bite. Fortunately, doctors managed to insert something to stop her closing her teeth and then levered her jaws apart. After that, they gave her a sedative and took the baby to a secure location.”

It’s believed that Zhenghua lived on the streets in the weeks before giving birth. Officials believe that her mother-in-law threw her out of the house. An investigation into what happened is currently ongoing, and the hospital is deciding whether to return the child to his mother.

This is depressing and terrifying all at once. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a mother trying eat her child. I thought that kind of stuff only happened in the animal kingdom.

Goblin Shark – That elongated snout isn’t just for looks, it’s used as a sensory tool that can detect electric fields produced by other animals.

So much of our world’s ocean is unexplored which means anything could be lurking in the darkness. There’s a lot we don’t know about when it comes to what’s down there but we do know that these gruesome creatures are swimming around the dark waters and they’re pretty terrifying in their own right.

Zombie Worms – Also known as boneworms, zombie worms bore into the bones of dead whales.

Dragonfish – These little guys (most only grow to about 6 inches long) have a special organ called a photophore that allows them to produce light and let their prey come to them.

Anglerfish – The fish that goes fishing. Anglerfish use the growth sprouting from their heads as a lure to draw in other fish. Take a look at those teeth and you can probably guess what happens next.

Coffinfish – You won’t want to hold this species of sea toad with your hands. Those spines will make warts the least of your worries.

Fangtooth – These have the biggest teeth of any fish in the ocean (proportionate to body size).

Basking Shark – The second-largest fish in the world, basking sharks use their might to feed on tiny plankton. Pick on something your own size!

Sloane’s Viperfish – At roughly 11 inches long, their teeth are more than half of its length.

Megamouth Shark – Though smaller than its fellow planktivore the basking shark, the megamouth shark clearly has the superior name.

Giant Isopod – These can grow to be 15x the size of regular isopods, which you’d probably also be afraid of.

Stonefish – As if anything would bother a fish with a mug like that, stonefish have poisonous spines that stick up when threatened.

Hatchetfish – Their terrifying eyes point upward so they can spot any leftover fish food that might be falling from above.
