Adulting 101: The Real Skills School Forgot To Teach You

Remember when you graduated thinking you were ready for the “real world”? Then reality hit: your car battery died, your sink leaked, your taxes looked like a foreign language, and your smoke alarm wouldn’t stop beeping. Somewhere between learning the quadratic formula and frog anatomy, school forgot to cover the stuff we actually need like how to stay calm in a crisis or how to fix the Wi-Fi. Taking a CPR course North York might not have been on your old syllabus, but maybe it should’ve been. Because these are the life skills that actually matter and none of them involve memorizing Shakespeare.

  1. How to Keep a Human Alive (Kind of Important)

Let’s start with the obvious: you can know every TikTok trend, but if someone collapses near you and all you can do is panic, maybe it’s time to upgrade your skills. A basic CPR course teaches you what to do when things go wrong and spoiler, it’s easier than you think.

You learn how to check for breathing, use an AED (those machines that look like props from Grey’s Anatomy), and actually keep someone alive until help arrives. It’s the kind of real-world knowledge that quietly makes you a hero. Plus, if you’ve ever wanted to feel instantly more confident in public, nothing beats the vibe of “I know what to do if something goes down.”

  1. How to Change a Tire Without Calling Your Dad

We’ve all been there stranded on the shoulder of a highway, praying someone else will stop to help. But let’s be honest, nobody’s coming with a pit crew. Knowing how to change your own tire is one of those adult flexes that saves both time and pride.

It’s not hard: jack up the car, loosen the bolts, swap the tire, tighten things, drive off like a responsible grown-up. Simple. And if you’re not sure, YouTube can help but maybe practice before you’re in the middle of a thunderstorm.

  1. How to Actually Budget

School taught us algebra but not how to handle $1,200 rent, $300 groceries, $200 utilities, and a Netflix subscription that mysteriously went up again.

Budgeting isn’t about spreadsheets and suffering it’s about awareness. Track your spending for a month (brace yourself), then divide your expenses into “need,” “want,” and “why-did-I-buy-this?” The sooner you stop confusing convenience with necessity, the sooner adulting starts feeling less like drowning.

  1. How to Cook Something That Isn’t Toast

Being able to feed yourself something vaguely nutritious is an underrated life skill. No one’s asking for a Michelin star just learn three go-to meals that don’t come from a delivery app. Bonus: it impresses dates, saves money, and keeps you from eating cereal for dinner (again).

Don't Miss Out

And yes, fire safety counts here. Learn what a grease fire looks like and, for the love of all that’s holy, never use water to put it out.

  1. How to Say No

Adulting isn’t just about paying bills it’s about boundaries. You don’t have to attend every after-work event or say yes to every favor. “No” is a full sentence, and you don’t owe anyone a PowerPoint explaining it.

The best part? Once you stop saying yes out of guilt, you’ll have time for things that actually matter like learning CPR or figuring out how your taxes work.

  1. How to Keep Calm When Life Goes Off Script

You know that feeling when everything’s fine, and then suddenly it’s not? The Wi-Fi crashes during your presentation. Your pet swallows something weird. The power goes out mid-cooking.

Adulting is basically a series of plot twists. The trick isn’t avoiding them, it’s handling them without combusting. Deep breaths help. So does preparation from knowing where your flashlight is to actually having a first-aid kit that isn’t just band-aids and a half-used roll of tape.

  1. How to Be a Decent Human

We’ve got apps for everything but empathy still runs on manual mode. Adulting isn’t just about skills; it’s about kindness. Smile at people. Tip your server. Check on your friends. Learn CPR not just for yourself, but because one day, someone might need you.

Turns out, the most advanced adult life skill isn’t managing credit, it’s remembering we’re all in this chaos together.

Final Thoughts: You’re Doing Fine, Just Keep Learning

Nobody nails adulting on the first try. It’s messy, confusing, occasionally terrifying, and weirdly hilarious. But every time you pick up a real-world skill whether it’s changing a tire, making a budget, or completing a CPR course you level up.

You’re not supposed to have it all figured out. The secret is knowing enough to handle what life throws your way and laughing when you still manage to set off the smoke alarm making pancakes.

    WRONG!

After discovering a flat/low tire pull over immediately to a fairly level and solid area. Set the e-brake. Chalk the tire opposite. Loosen the lug nuts. Find the jack point in the pinch weld under the car. Jack up the car at the proper jack point. Lift the tire off the ground. Remove the lug nuts. Remove the tire. Place the properly inflated tire on the car.
