Cannabis And Pop Culture: Iconic THC-Infused Movie Moments

Over recent years, cannabis has become a prominent part of pop culture. As a result, it’s become more prevalent in films.

Some films are heavily infused with cannabis themes. Sit back and relax as we dive into some of the most iconic THC-infused movie moments.

Reefer Madness (1936)

Reefer Madness,” directed by Louis J. Gasnier, is a controversial film that tells the story of two high school students, Bill and Mary, who go from grace to grass. This movie was meant as anti-cannabis propaganda but later became a cult classic. The moment where characters go wild after smoking weed is one of the most humorous cannabis scenes in film history. A great moment to watch in this movie is when Bill tries a “marijuana cigarette” for the first time.

Pineapple Express (2008)

In “Pineapple Express,” an action comedy from director David Gordon Green, Dale Denton’s favorite strain of marijuana becomes a way to trace him after he drops his blunt in panic while witnessing a murder. After discovering that the Pineapple Express weed strain can be traced back to them, Dale and his weed dealer, played by James Franco, begin their journey to solve a murder and save their lives. A great moment to watch out for in this movie is when Saul starts to describe the experience, he gets from smoking Pineapple Express: “It’s almost a shame to smoke it. It’s like killing a unicorn, with like … a bomb.”

Friday (1995)

Friday,” a buddy comedy from director F. Gary Gray, is another THC-infused classic that follows a day in the life of two friends, Smokey and Craig, in South Central Los Angeles. Especially notable is the porch scene where they smoke a joint and reflect on their lives. A moment to watch for is when Chris Tucker, as Smokey, teaches Ice Cube, as Craig, the correct way to inhale cannabis with the sacred law of “puff, puff, give.”

Half Baked (1998)

Directed by Tamra Davis and starring Dave Chappelle, “Half Baked” may be the most stereotypical stoner movie of all time. The action takes off when a member of Chappelle’s crew gets arrested for killing a New York City police horse by feeding it junk food. To raise bail, three fellow stoners from the crew decide to sell marijuana — marijuana stolen from a pharmaceutical lab. Watch for the scene where Thurgood, Brian, and Scarface — played by Chappelle, Jim Breuer, and Guillermo Diaz — break into the lab. Their absurd and idiotic behavior make the movie a classic. A movie moment to watch for is when Brian presents his endless list of snacks for the evening munchies, including: “Sour cream and onion chips with some dip, man, some beef jerky, some peanut butter … some Häagen-Dazs ice cream bars, a whole lot, make sure there’s chocolate, gotta have chocolate, man …”

This Is the End (2013)

When top comedians from Hollywood come together for a movie, you know it will be a classic. In “This Is the End,” from directors Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, there’s a scene where Rogen, James Franco, and their celebrity friends decide to take a break during the apocalypse. Since they want to relax and pass the time, they decide to smoke a bunch of weed. A movie moment to watch out for is when the guys are getting high and debating the most insane survival strategies while the world around them keeps shattering into pieces.

These cannabis moments not only make us laugh and trip out, but they also play a role in shaping the perception and normalization of cannabis in pop culture.
