Many of you Chivers know Marissa Luck, the bubbly Chivette with those amazing eyes. Life is good for Marissa right now but only couple years ago, at the much-too-young age of 19, she got news that she had brain cancer.

“I knew something was wrong. I couldn’t control my mood at all, which is not like me. I used to joke, ‘Maybe I have a brain tumor’ – turns out I did.”

“I actually had two tumors – one was benign and one was cancerous. They were directly next to each other and the two tumors didn’t get along, if that makes sense. The benign one was actually fighting the cancerous tumor. At MD Anderson they had never seen anything like it. The friction between my two tumors was causing seizures, lots of them. I was having 5-10 seizures a day.”

After Marissa’s diagnoses, surgery was scheduled quickly, a surgery that presented a myriad of unique risks.

“The surgery was risky. It was close to the part of my brain that houses my memories. Some people go into surgery knowing they could wake up paralyzed. Mine was different, I knew there was a good chance I could wake up with no memory at all – not knowing anybody or anything. Honestly, that was scary.”

After her surgery, Marissa’s rehab was long and painful, both physically and cognitively. Everyday I was taking memory tests to regain my memory. It returned slowly but surely.
