Photographer Steven Burton took photos of the fully-inked men as they are. He then used photoshop to depict how they would look if they never fell into a life of crime.

When Burton showed the men the doctored, un-tatted images, they had an extremely emotional response, many of them breaking down into tears. For them, it was about more than physical appearance. The photos revealed the normal life they never led — a path they regret not taking.

Watch Burton’s project, which he calls Skin Deep: Looking Beyond The Tattoos, in the video below.

This unsuspecting husband just wanted to play some Fallout 4, but his wife decided to go full-on Jigsaw on him and make him work for it.

The first clue seems to point him to his collection of PS4 games…

Fallout 4 being his favorite, he goes for that first.

He was right. Not much of a game…

… oh now she’s just being mean!

She’s actually cleverly placed a famous movie quote into this clue along with the obvious “blu ray”. To the movies we go!

Quite a selection here. Did you figure out that quote yet?

Data in ‘The Goonies’ actually says, “Did you really think that I would be stupid enough to kill myself?”

I feel like a Baby ruth now.

Thank god that’s over. Now for some gaming….

You can’t be serious. Another clue:

“Find your game in the book that reads like stereo instruction.”

This is another movie quote. Can you figure it out?

The Handbook for the Recently Deceased is famously portrayed in Beetlejuice where one of the titles characters proclaims it reads “like stereo instructions.”

Voila!

Nothing like having to work for your game time.

Well played. Now to plot revenge….

That’s what happened to Philadelphia student Kayla Filoon. She volunteers at the ACCT Philly shelter as a dog walker and one day she came across Russ the Pit Bull, just looking at her. In that second, it was love.

Russ had been brought into the shelter as a stray and he was really worse for wear; he was missing fur on his tail and ears and was incredibly skinny. Kayla knew that she had to take him home.

But you know, there’s protocols and such to follow, so she went about the rest of her day and came back later to check on him. He was still just chilling there, quietly waiting. She took him for a 45 minute walk and it only took the first 5 for her to fall in love. As soon as she came down to his level, he was super cuddly with her and acted so sweet towards her and the other dogs.

She also found that he knew basic commands like ‘sit,’ ‘down’ and ‘stay’ which made her think that he used to belong to someone who cared enough to teach him, but somehow he ended up on the street.

She decided that she had to take him soon, as the kennel was going through some renos and was overcrowded. They had recently euthanized several dogs and Russ had a good chance of being on the list for the next round as he had kennel cough, was in rough shape and of course, his breed.

The next day she came back and took him for a car ride to see how acclimatized he’d be to vehicles, and he just sat there like a polite boy.

That was it, she had to have him. When they got back to the shelter, she adopted him and brought him to his new home.

Lucky for Russ, Kayla had 6 other roommates who fell in love with him too and started to give him all the love he deserves. I took him a while to get used to the situation, however, so he just slept and rested, trying to get over his kennel cough.

But once he did, he started to thank Kayla everyday by sticking close to her.

One day she was doing homework and had an entire couch, Russ’ bed and blankets everywhere, but he crawled up onto the couch and snuggled with her.

Her roommate posted it on Facebook and it went viral with over 50K shares.

Just look at him.

From almost being next on the chopping block, to finding a mom to rescue him, this guy’s not going to stop being affectionate. He’s literally the perfect dog.

Kayla (and I’m sure anyone who’s rescued a dog will tell you), this is why you should adopt rescues. After everything they’ve been through, they deserve to be loved and love so tremendously in return.

This guy literally won’t leave her alone, and that’s fine with her. He’ll literally come to her and put his head under her arm or lay a paw on her chest.

Or he’ll just lay on top of her for some snuggles.

He’s seriously the most grateful dog, and Kayla and he are so lucky to have found one another. Russ, keep on hugging. You’ve earned all the doggie snuggles you’re getting.

If that doesn’t kill you the rapid heating of the air can cauterize your airway, cooking you from the inside out.

Then there’s the shrapnel, indiscriminate pieces of rock and metal tearing through your body. As one soldier mildly put it, “All in all it’s something to avoid.”

Then there are our four-legged guardians who protect our service men and women from this horrible end.

Dogs like Mike, a Belgian Malinois, a military K9 pictured here with his handler, Sergeant First Class Matthew Bessler. Mike had recently sniffed out a cache of EFPs and IEDs buried 3 feet under ground outside Baghdad. During “Major Mike’s” two tours in Iraq, he located over 2,000 lbs. of explosives and weapons and saved countless lives in the process. You might well ask how a dog is able to sniff out explosive buried so deep in the earth?

Many of these combat dogs are called MPCs (Multi-Purpose Canines) – Tracking, patrol, and explosives detection. These service dogs lead the way onto the battlefield with their handlers close behind.

Their handlers establish a bond with their animals, a trust and love that few understand. But all pet owners can surely relate to some degree.

Matt Bessler served as a Green Beret with 9 combat deployments spanning 21 years of duty. He was the first and only handler of Mike. Mike’s availability and flexibility were astounding even at an early age. Mike knew who was friend and foe. A dog’s mind can sense danger differently than humans. Mike intrinsically knew how to protect you.

But most of all, Mike was a happy dog.

On Mike’s final tour, he would prove himself to be one of the greatest dogs to ever serve. Matt told me, “We were about to breach a door when Mike indicated. Always trust when a dog indicates. Turns out the door had explosive rigged to it. When we blew that door it triggered a secondary charge blowing another door. You believe that? Mike saved everybody. He wasn’t done either. Mike was the first inside the house and he found this wall, this nothing wall, and indicated. Finally after much deliberation one of our guys just walked up kicked a hole in that wall in revealing a huge cache of enemy weapons.

“I don’t really know what happened that day but, after that raid, Mike stopped indicating. I suppose he was done with war. I was too. I had PTSD and TBI (traumatic brain injury). I figured Mike had seen enough too. Mike was later diagnosed with PTSD as well.”

Before he retired, Mike was promoted to Captain.

PTSD and Mike could control my anxiety. He kept me active, which is the most important thing. I would go on many walks with him. We took care of each other.”

Mike liked playing in the yard, which is what he was doing the day of October 15th, 2015 when Matt was away on a date with his girlfriend.

That’s when a man riding a bicycle with a Judge .410 revolver strapped to his handlebar shot Mike. Mike didn’t die instantly. He limped back to the garage behind Bessler’s house where he laid down, and died.

There were no witnesses. The neighbors were known to have loose dogs and the man who shot Mike was known to not like those dogs. The man claimed he was attacked by Mike but everybody knew better. A later autopsy would reveal Mike was shot from behind, contradicting any claim of an frontal attack. The 59-year old man was unharmed.

Donations poured in from across the country. $10,000 was raised to help Matt pay for a burial with military honors, war dogs are not entitled to funerals or burials with military honors.

For Matt, he has lost a family member. “Mike was my other half” he told a local paper.

Mike was buried on Veterans Day with Matt’s two Bronze Stars and his favorite tennis ball. On that grey and ominous day, Matt promised to create a War Dog Memorial in Wyoming honoring not only Mike, but all service dogs, past present and future.

With the help of the legendary Colonel Buck Wilkerson and Carol Armstrong, who head up the memorial project at the State of Wyoming Veterans Memorial Park, an idea took shape to create a life-sized bronze memorial honoring all war dogs, one of the few that will be accessible to the public (many are on military bases and civilian access is limited).

Vietnam veteran painter and sculptor, John Phelps said, “It is my honor to create this bronze, one of the few such statures in the United States and the first of its kind in Wyoming. It will honor all service dogs but it is inspired, in image and likeness, by Mike.”

Paving stones will be placed at the base of the stature to memorialize all service dogs who gave the last full measure fighting for our freedom.

That’s the story of Weezy. She’s an Italian Greyhound, who was left abandoned at a rural Alberta, Canada animal shelter and she’s afraid of everything.

People, squeaky toys, any noise. Even flies.

But don’t worry, she got her happy ending and it was all shared on Instagram, by the people that would ultimately save this dog’s life.

While at the shelter, Weezy’d spend her time in her cage trembling and hiding under a blanket. The first family to come see Weezy and adopt her, ended up bringing her back the next day, saying she was too scared.

Lucky for her, however, that there was a family out there that knew how to cure fear: with patience and love.

Sarah Mavro heard about about this terrified dog and decided that she was going to come help. She drove two hours, from Edmonton, AB, to the shelter, and promptly adopted Weezy, bringing her home.

The first thing was to get her cleaned up and checked out. As it turned out, after a thorough examination, Weezy had several rotten teeth that had to be removed, giving her this distinctive hanging tongue. But once all her physical ailments were addressed and she got a clean bill of health, Sarah moved on to the next part of her plan.

Love Weezy until she comes out of her shell.

That, however, was going to take a lot of work and patience.

Mavro found that Weezy was still incredibly timid, and wary of strangers. She never made a sound and spent a lot of her time hiding. She didn’t even like going outside.

When it comes to security blankets, Weezy takes that literally. She’s to a fuzzy blanket that she wraps herself up in and just lays there, with her sad brown eyes and loose tongue hanging out.

But it didn’t say that way for too long.

A short while after being adopted, the Mavro and her husband found that they could sit with Weezy, while she was cuddled under a blanket. She’d watch Sarah’s husband play video games and slowly become acclimatized to the couple.

That was 3 years ago, and it’s taken this long for Weezy to come out of her shell. Mavro admits that Weezy just barked recently and is more comfortable around the other pets and the couple.

But she’s still odd.

Then the couple had a son, Evan, and everything changed.

Weezy promptly fell in love with the new arrival and the feeling, as it turns out, was mutual. Evan loved his new big brother.

Now, they’re inseparable. After 3 long years with Sarah and her husband, it only took Evan 7 months to turn Weezy from her old scared self, to a confident and patient doggo. In fact, they’re certain that Weezy loves Evan more than she loves them.

Which is ok.

As it turns out, it was an infant, innocent in the ways of the world, that would teach Weezy about love, gentleness and patience. Somehow, all the old fears that Weezy had, were buried.

She’s now a confident, life-long buddy to Evan.

She’s so gentle with him, even though, as a 7-month-old, he puts his hands everything.

Dunno about you, but this makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

Much like this:

Weezy’s snowsuit. Guess who’s brave enough to go out into the cold, Alberta winter? This girl.

Couldn’t have done it without all the love from her parents and her new brother.

Someone call Hewey Lewis and tell him the news: this is the power of love.

This is thanks to Cassini’s “ring-grazing” mission that involves the probe making orbital dives past the outer edge of Saturn’s main ring system. This is one of Cassini’s final missions as the 20-year-old spacecraft will soon expire, plunging into the gassy planet this September.

“How fitting it is that we should go out with the best views of Saturn’s rings we’ve ever collected,” says Cassini Imaging Team Lead Carolyn Porco from the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado.

And he’s right, this is the first chance we’ve had to see the main rings with such high-definition.

The images resolve details as small as 0.3 miles, which is about the size of some of Earth’s tallest buildings.

In this image you can see Saturn’s A ring. It’s the outermost of the structures and it lies about 83,574 miles from Saturn.

The rippled appearance is a density wave and is made up of icy particles that form shapes that scientists informally refer to as “straw.”

This is Saturn’s outer B ring.

As great as the new pictures are, things are only going to get more amazing as Cassini gets closer to its final mission phase.

They’re calling it the Grand Finale, and it’s basically the space probe’s “death spiral” that will begin on April 26th. Cassini will dive through the gap between the planet and its rings.

The spacecraft will get a final look at the innermost rings and the planet’s gas clouds before one final orbit that ends with Cassini plunging into Saturn’s upper atmosphere and burning up like a meteor.

The reason for the fiery death and not a prolonged retirement of exploring more of Saturn and its moons is that NASA thinks that two of Saturn’s moons, Enceladus and Titan, feature habits that could possibly sustain life.

Just in case there are alien organisms living on them, NASA doesn’t want to jeopardize them by bringing microbes from Earth that could still be surviving on the probe– even though that possibility is slim.

While it will be sad to lose the veteran Cassini, we’re all looking forward to the amazing observations it provides in its Grand Finale.

Same goes for 90-year-old Derek Taylor who recently lost his partner and sister. As you can probably imagine, Derek was feeling extremely lonely after his loss. Faced with the prospect of not being able to have consistent communication anymore, he decided to do something about it.

Taylor figured “What can I do to stop being lonely? The older you get, the less people seem to contact you.” Which is more factual than most of us assume.

Nine percent of people over the age of 65 say they feel cut off entirely from society, and half of all older people — around 40 million people in the US — consider television their main source of company.

So he wrote a list of ways to combat loneliness.

Since following up with his own list, he has since joined a coffee club near his house and has made many new friends. I’m such a sucker for adorable old people.

If you have a senior citizen in your life, it never hurts to give them a ring every once in a while. Maybe even share Derek’s tips with them, it will mean a lot more to them than you think.
