Here are a few tidbits and stories you might not have known about the Playboy Mansion.

Before buying the Playboy Mansion for $1 million in 1971, Hugh Hefner took over a Chicago mansion in 1959, making it the original Playboy compound. He gave it an indoor pool and a bedroom/office with a 100-inch diameter bed, and Playboy models and nightclub employees could rent rooms for $50 a month. No male visitors were allowed.

In late March of 2015 Playboy.com came out with an article that detailed secret underground tunnels that ran from the properties of famous regulars like Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson and James Caan. If it sounds too crazy too be true, it was. On April 1st of 2015, Hef revealed that it was an April Fools’ joke.

Hefner is quite the art aficionado, and the Mansion proves it with its impressive art gallery. However, one Beatle wasn’t really a fan. While visiting in the 1970s, John Lennon allegedly got a little too drunk and put out a cigarette on a piece of work by Henri Matisse. Those paintings go for millions, by the way. Luckily Hefner was able to restore the art.

The Mansion has its own zoo license and dozens of pets roaming the grounds, so it only makes sense that there is actually a final resting place for animals. Several of Hef’s dogs have been buried there, as well as multiple monkeys and over 50 varieties of birds.

Stephen Baldwin once told a story about him and Robert Downey, Jr. on a Mission to hang out with Playmates in the mansion’s wine cellar. He said they were descending down a spiral staircase, and when Downey reached the third-to-last step, he warned Baldwin not to put his foot on it because there was a silent alarm. It’s thought that the feature dated back all the way to 1927 when the cellar held the illegal booze during Prohibition.

Luke Wilson told the press in 2006 that he actually got “DNAed” from the Mansion staff, which means he was labeled as a “Do Not Admit.” He claimed a Mansion employee asked who he was bringing into the party one night, and Wilson lied and said it was his brother, Owen. In reality it was just a friend, and when they found out he was denied entry for 18 months.

The Mansion was such a cushy place to stay that several famous guests actually just ended up moving in. James Caan stayed there for a bit in the 1970s, as well as Tony Curtis and Shel Silverstein.

Hefner has an in-house biographer named Steve Martinez. He’s a full-time archivist whose job it is to maintain the three thousand volumes of scrapbooks in the Mansion’s library. He collects photos and information during the week and on the weekends Hefner helps him update the books. They go back all the way to portraits of Hefner at six months old, and Martinez has instructions to fill the final volumes with Hef’s obituaries.

The grotto has quite the reputation of quite the cesspool of… bacteria. In April 2011 it was actually a problem. 123 people who attended a fundraiser party got really sick, and health officials found the bacteria that causes Legionnaire’s disease in the water.

It takes a whopping 80 full-time employees to maintain the grounds, cook, provide security, and maintain electrical and plumbing services.

There is a giant statue of Frankenstein’s monster that guests hang out with in the Great Room while waiting for the festivities to get started.

When Hefner can’t be at a party or dinner, you can usually find a life-size cardboard hanging around the crowd.

Hustler founder Larry Flynt wanted to buy the Mansion this year, to convert it into the (you guessed it) “Hustler Mansion.” It’s unclear whether he actually made an offer, but Flynt made it clear that if he were to buy it, Hefner would not be allowed to remain in the home.

The Mansion has regularly-scheduled movie nights, and they’re serious business. Hefner, being the giant movie buff that he is, has a board of friends that curate titles for screenings. He invites people over to watch them, but he’s got a zero-tolerance policy on disruptions. Mike Tyson attended one of these events, and he fell asleep. He didn’t hear his phone ringing nonstop while he was snoozing, so he was never invited to movie night again.

Espresso

An espresso is also known as a ”short black” and is essentially a strong black coffee that is the result of steam being forced through ground coffee beans. A standard espresso is simply a shot of espresso in an espresso cup.

Double Espresso

Otherwise known as a “Doppio” a double espresso is two shots of espresso poured into one cup.

Short Macchiato

Some people find a straight shot of espresso to be a little bit too intense for them. For these people, a short macchiato might be the safer choice. This drink consists of a shot of espresso paired with a dollop of steamed milk and foam on top. The milk, obviously, helps cut the intensity of the espresso shot.

Long Macchiato

A long macchiato is a double espresso topped with a dollop of milk and foam. Need a pick-me-up but find the taste of espresso a bit too strong? Try one of these!

Ristretto

The Ristretto is similar to an espresso shot, but it contains about half of the water. Due to the water content being significantly lower, the drink itself has a lot more of a concentrated coffee flavour.

Café Latte

Otherwise known as simply a “Latte” this drink contains a shot of espresso, steamed milk, and about 1 cm of micro foam. The Café Latte is significantly less intense than a macchiato.

Cappuccino

A Cappuccino is similar to a latte but contains more foam, and more often than not, a sprinkle of chocolate on top.

Flat White

A flat white is essentially a cappuccino without the foam or chocolate. It is made with an espresso shot, steamed milk, but no micro foam or chocolate.

Piccolo Latte

A Piccolo Latte is pretty much just a café latte made in an espresso cup. It is pretty strong, but the milk and foam does tame it down a little bit.

Mocha

A mocha is like a hot chocolate coffee. They’re made by mixing together an espresso shot and chocolate powder, then having steamed milk mixed into it and finally topped with micro foam and and chocolate powder. It’s a great drink for someone who likes a hint of coffee, but not too much.

Affogato

Affogato’s are a simple and tasty coffee style dessert that consists of a scoop of ice cream (usually vanilla) with a shot of espresso poured on top. You can eat it right away, or mix it together into a creamy vanilla coffee ice cream. Either way, it’s delicious.

But, what about the stuff you can’t find? Chances are, you’ll find it in the deep web. What is the deep web? Lets take a look.

The Deep Web

To put it simply, “the deep web” is the dark part of the internet that is hidden from you.

The ‘surface web’ is the part of the internet that you can find using search engines like Google or Bing. It takes up a mere 4% of the internet, and is always under surveillance by the government.

The ‘deep web’ is otherwise known as the ‘invisible web’ and contains content that is not only hard to track, but is not indexed by search engines. The deep web makes up 96% of the internet.

How do you access it?

To access the deep web, you need to use a browser that is dedicated to it. “The Onion Router” is an example of one. When accessing the deep web, you are looking at data that isn’t held on a single page, but rather in a network of databases. This is why it is so hard for search engines to index. Furthermore, deep web information is shared through any number of computers that hold the information through the internet, otherwise known as peer-to-peer networking. This makes it harder for your location to be tracked or monitored.

Is it legal?

The answer is yes. Although it seems a bit shady, using the deep web is legal. The military, police forces, and even journalists use the deep web to look for information they can’t find in the visible web.

The dark side

Although using the deep web isn’t illegal, there are a lot of illegal services found in it. This is thanks to the anonymity of using “The Onion Router.”

Services

Here are a few more examples of the illegal services that are offered on the deep web.

Drugs such as cocaine, heroin, cannabis, MDMA, and LSD can be found through various sites in the deep web. Paid theft, in which someone will steal items for you for a price that is cheaper than the item itself. Credit card information, fixed sports matches for you to bet on, hitmen for hire, and every kind of gun you can imagine can all be bought on the deep web as well. Keep in mind that all of this shit is highly illegal.

The Silk Road

The Silk Road is a a popular site on the dark web that has been dubbed “The eBay of Drugs” but is also used to buy and sell a plethora of things- mostly illegal.

Founded in 2011 by a use named “Dead Pirate Roberts” The Silk Road uses “Bit Coins” as currency. The FBI arrested “Dead Pirate Roberts” and shut down the website in 2013, only to have it reopened in a month later.

The Deep Web is said to have 5,000 pages for each page found on the visible internet. The amount of shit that’s in there that we don’t know about, it’s no wonder it has a name like that.

Often referred to as “Bushi” or “Buke” in Japanese, the Samurai were warriors who were trained in strategy and military tactics. Seen as “the epitome of the ultimate Japanese warrior” by many people around the globe, the Samurai were warriors who really knew how to use a sword.

The Katana

Incredibly sharp, slightly curved, long gripped, and one of the most recognizable weapons in the world, the Katana is truly a stunning piece of Japanese history. The blade of a Katana is always greater than 60 cm and typically has a square or circular guard. The grip is long so that the samurai can use two hands to hold it, despite the fact that the sword itself is relatively light. Historians tend to agree that the Katana is one of the finest cutting and slicing weapons in history.

French musketeers were guards and fighters of the French military who were given muskets by Louis XIII that fought both on foot and on horseback.

Rapiers

Okay, Musketeers were given muskets, but this post is about swords so here’s a look at the rapier.

These long-bladed swords originated in Spain and come equipped with beautiful protective hilts. While these swords can be used to cut and slice, their main purpose is to perform quick thrusting attacks. The interesting thing about these swords is that the blades can be sharpened along the entire blade, or sharpened from the middle of the blade to the tip.

Aztec Warriors

Ranked according to their success on the battlefield, Aztec Warriors consisted of fighters who enjoyed a high status life.

Macuahuitl

A Macuahuitl was a wooden sword that was typically 3 or 4 feet long that had sharp pieces of obsidian inserted into it. The pieces of obsidian along with the wood make this weapon a combination of a club and a cutting weapon.

Rajput Warrior

The Rajputs rose to power during the late 6th century and were considered to be incredibly well built for fighting.

The Khanda

This double edged straight sword features a typically blunt point and a strengthening plate along one end. These swords also have a spike coming out of the bottom which can be used for double handed stroke. That’s what she said.

Vikings

Vikings were Norse seafarers who instilled fear in anyone who was unlucky enough to cross their path. Known for their raw aggression and unorthodox fighting style, the vikings ravaged their way through villages with with some cool looking swords.

Viking Swords

According to Norse law, free Norse men had to own a weapon and have it on them at all times. Viking swords were typically built to be used with one arm, leaving the other am free for the use of a shield. The swords they used were double edged and were as long as 90 cm. The design was very similar to that of a Roman Spatha. If you were of a higher status, your sword would likely be decorated with expensive jewels and metals. The sword’s hilt was often made of organic materials such as wood or the antler of an animal.

Gladiators

Armed warriors who fought in front of the masses for their entertainment, gladiators were well versed in fighting with swords.

The Gladius

The most common weapon used by a gladiator was the gladius, named so because it is Latin for sword. This sword was double edged with a tapered point, which made it ideal for both slashing and stabbing. It was typical to find the owners name engraved on the blade as well. The hilt, or capulus, was often heavily decorated if you were an officer or someone of high status.

Margera, of “Viva La Bam” fame, notoriously built a skatepark in his parents home when they were gone on vacation. The architects at WMR have gone a step above by constructing Casa Merello, a magnificent beachfront property with a halfpipe smack dab in the middle of it.

The home would be a beauty even without the skateboarders’ paradise, but with it the home turns into a boarder and surfers dream.

It is located on the Pacific Ocean in the resort town of Pichilemu, which is located in the central part of the country southwest of the capital city of Santiago.

Casa Merello is lifted with V-shaped pillars which protects it from high tides and other natural occurrences that happen when living so close to the ocean.

The entire home has floor to ceiling glass enabling it to have panoramic views of the ocean and other surroundings.

The halfpipe is surrounded by a massive deck with sliding glass doors.

Not a bad view either.

The Yanomami tribe of Brazil and Venezuela takes part in a rather odd burial ritual. Well, odd for us Westerners. When a member of the tribe passes away, their body gets burned, and the ashes and bones are pounded into a powder and mixed into a soup. The people of the tribe then drink the soup. They do this because they hold the belief that by drinking the ashes of a loved one, their spirit will be with you forever. They also believe that a body that isn’t cremated will cause an angry spirit to form because it didn’t get to be with it’s loved ones.

Bullet ant gloves

The Satere-Mawe tribe of the Amazon lay claim to what is probably the most painful initiation ritual on the planet. In order to be seen as a “man” in the eyes of the tribe, you must take part in the bullet ant glove. After becoming of age, boys will travel into the jungle with a medicine man to collect bullet ants, which have the most painful bite in the world. The ants are then drugged and put into mesh gloves. Once they are awake and angry, the boys must stick their hands into these gloves for 10 minutes while they do a dance. They don’t do this just once, but 20 times before they are considered to be men.

Pomlázka Whip

In the Czech Republic, there is a tradition in which men go house to house lightly tapping women’s asses with a stick called a Pomlázka. This goes down every Easter Monday and apparently is done to help with the women’s fertility.

Cinnamon Attacks

In Denmark, if you are still single or unmarried by the time you turn 25, well…lets just say I hope you like cinnamon. Apparently, there is a tradition in Denmark where your friends and family will ambush you and throw cinnamon at you all throughout the day. It gets worse- if you’re still unmarried at 30, you’ll get covered in pepper.

The Sock Line

Here we go again with the unmarried rituals. In Germany, if you are unmarried by the time you turn 25, you can expect a long garland of socks strung from your house all the way to the venue of your birthday party. On your way there, you typically have to take a drink every few socks

Kanamara Matsuri

Is that a giant pink penis parading through the streets of Japan? Yup. Kanamara Matsuri is a festival that goes back as far as the 17th century. People dress up as penises, eat penis shaped foods, and parade with penis shaped items. Why? It’s done to honour the legend of a woman who had teeth on her vagina that ate penises until a brave man built an iron penis that broke her teeth.

Arriving Late

In China, there is a tradition in which a man carries his pregnant wife over burning coal with bare feet. They do this with the belief that it will help the wife have an easy delivery.

In Scotland, if you’re getting married, you can expect to have nasty rotten eggs, rotten fish, old milk, and other nasty shit thrown at you. You are then paraded around for everyone to see. They do this under the belief that if the couple can withstand this, they can withstand anything.

Russian Vodka

There are several rules when it comes to drinking water in Russia. Sorry, I mean Vodka. After a toast, you may not place your glass back onto the table if there’s still vodka in it. It’s toast and bottoms up. If you’re late for a dinner, you’re required to down a glass of vodka right away in order to catch up with everyone else. Also, between the first and second shots you take at dinner, there is to be no talking, only drinking. Lastly, if you ever dare to propose a toast with an empty glass, you’re forced to drink an entire bottle.

Don’t forget to pack some spare underwear and your passport!

The Faraday Bar at Vernadsky Research Base; Galindez Island, Antarctica
Just a small Zodiac boat ride across frigid water will get you to Galindez Island, where there’s a tiny, one room bar inside a research station. According to the lore, the bar was built by carpenters, during the time the British had stewardship of the Island, and they used wood that was supposed to be used for a new pier, and created a bar instead. Good thinking.

Currently, the station is owned by the Ukraine, and the bar inside is reminiscent of the rustic British pubs, with exposed beams and a lively atmosphere. The local drink is a Ukrainian vodka made with the local glacial ice, which will run you $3 a glass, or is free with a donation of womens underwear. Sounds like my kind of place.

Three Camel Lodge; Gobi Desert, Mongolia
This hotel is a 90 minute drive from anywhere, and it’s about as remote as it gets for a hotel in the middle of nowhere. But they have a bar, which is all you need.

It also uses traditional Mongolian building techniques and architecture, as well as offering some unique takes on alcohol that will keep you warm under the endless desert skies. Remember, as hot as it gets during the day, you’ll freeze your ass off at night, so stay drunk and don’t wander off into the sand.

Albatross Bar; Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristian Da Cunha Island
This is a small British settlement of close to 300 people that live 1,800 miles away from their closest neighbour, right beside an active volcano. Sounds like a brilliant reason to drink.

This small village was settled in 1818, at the base of the volcano as a strategic military location, and since then, this single room tap house has seen it’s share of volcanic threats and hurricanes. Surrounded by a farming community that lives with the treat of famine, disease, tropical storms and the shadow of the volcano, you can see the need for a tipple every once in a while.

If this is what you’re looking for, it’s an 8 day trip on a fishing trawler that drops off supplies and picks up the local lobster, and odds are, they’ll put you to work on the way there. But if you make it there in one piece, have a lager for me and keep an eye on that volcano.

Christian’s Cafe; Adamstown, Pitcairn Islands
There’s no way to get here by plane and the boat schedule is very sparse at best, so you have to pick your moments, if you’re looking to run away and get plastered. Pitcairn Island is one of the most remote inhabited locations on earth, with it’s closest neighbour 1,300 miles away. This volcanic rock only has 50 permanent inhabitants, uses 3 generators for all it’s electrical needs, and of course, has exactly one bar.

This is the final landing place of the H.M.S. Bounty, which was the site of a mutiny in 1790, and the bar only started serving back in 2009, to the 50 descendants of that murderous crew. It’s only open one day a week; Fridays from 6:30 until late, so plan on being there for a week or two, so you can get at least two nights of drinking in, and sleep off your hangover next to the island’s sweet tropical beaches.

Just to show you how remote Pitcairn Island is, check out this sign. Middle of nowhere. You can be an ass, get super drunk and no one will recognize you. They might kick you off the island though, so don’t take it too far.

Sunland Baobab; Sunland Ranch, South Africa
For those not familiar with the term, a Baobab is a tree indigenous to Africa, with a wide, thick trunk and a small canopy. These trees grow incredibly wide, and in the case of the tree on Sunland Ranch, becomes something to be hollowed out and turned into a bar.

This tree is 155 feet around and 75 feet high and contains a bar the size of a railway car. It’s decorated in the English Pub style and it can fit close to 20 people comfortably. It even has it’s own natural cellar to keep drinks cool.

A look at the inside, incase you were curious. This tree has been dated to over 6,000 years old. A pretty awesome place to get drunk. Last time I drank in a tree, I broke my arm; this looks safer.

Birdsville Hotel, Birdsville, Australia
The Australian Outback is one of the most unforgiving places on the planet, and leave it to an Aussie to build a bar in the middle of nowhere, so that even the most lost, can grab a pint.

At the edge of the Simpson Desert is the town of Birdsville; population 273, and this 27-room hotel/bar offers shelter and refreshments for someone looking to get out of the 100 degrees of incessant heat. Built in 1884, the bar has three areas to drink in; two traditional outback pubs and an outdoor beer garden. Even though it’s pretty remote, it’s seen it’s share of bar fights and heartbreaks.

The Old Forge; Knoydart, Scotland
While some are the most remote on this list, this one is both hard to get to and holds the title according to Guinness. Originally a blacksmith’s forge on the shore of Loch Nevis, it became a social club in WWII, then a pub in the 80s.

There is no road to this alehouse, so it’s a 12 mile walk from the nearest car stop, but there are plenty of ferries that will get you there. It’s the perfect place to leave the world behind, and with impromptu musical performances, local brews and a full menu, if you get there, you’ll never want to leave.

Forbes Island; San Francisco, California
This bar lives on a man-made island in San Francisco Bay. It could potentially be the only bar left in the world, if something were to happen to San Fran and this Island is just left to float away after an earthquake or something dramatic like that.

The island was built by a millionaire in 1975, and it contains a bar within a hut, with a lighthouse beside it and palm trees. Below the waterline is an upscale restaurant, with portholes so you can look out at the undersea life. Which could come in handy if the island is set out to sea to be the only bar for miles, in the middle of the ocean.

Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House, Banff National Park, British Columbia
After a 5km hike through the BC wilderness, out near Lake Louise, you find this rustic tea house, that actually serves more than just tea; but nice, cold Canadian beer.

Built by the Canadian National Railway in 1924, it’s a cozy and much needed waypoint in the wilderness, and a good place to just disappear into your cold brew.

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Inn, Nottingham, England
This is Englands oldest Inn, and legend will tell you that the crusaders stopped here for some liquid courage, before trying to take back the Holy Land.

The bar began as a brewhouse in the 12th century and is built into the side of a castle.

Within these older chambers of the castle, monks used to ferment the ales, and the bar currently uses old rooms and castle jail cells to store their kegs. This might not be in the middle of nowhere, but this has to be one of the coolest bars in the world. Plus, I’m sure Robin Hood drank here too, and he was a badass.

When you’re climbing up Mount Everest, you’ve got to stop somewhere for a drink, right? This is legit, the highest bar in the world, and it’s a place to steel your nerve before making the climb.

This village is built into a steep slope, and the founder decided to call his bar ‘The Irish Pub’ and decorated it with a pool table, football and widescreen televisions, as well as the usual whiskies, drafts and even traditional sherpa alcohols to spice up your climb.

Getting here is tough, though. You need to fly into one of the worlds most dangerous airports (due to a short, sloped and perpetually frozen runway) and trek up the the village by foot, over two days to avoid altitude sickness.

But is is worth it? Drinking at an Irish pub, on the highest peak in the world, with your game on the big screen? I’d say so.

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop; New Orleans, Louisiana
Unlike the other places on the list, this bar isn’t hard to reach, but it’s one of the oldest bars in the US – open since 1722 and will most likely exist until the end of th world.

While the rest of Bourbon Street has been rebuilt and revitalized, this is the only remaining example of the French Colonial style that New Orleans was once known for. This joint has outlived crime, wars, fires and hauntings to remain as authentic as possible and you owe it to history, and to your liver, to get to falling-down-drunk-on-Bourbon-Street. Just don’t do anything sketchy for those beads… totally not worth it.

Lost Bar; Oymyakon, Russia
This is the Russian town with the lowest recorded temperature in a permanently settled establishment (-71.2C..fuck, that’s cold). So, to keep yourself warm, you need plenty of vodka. This is called the loneliest bar in the world and for a good reason. No one wants to visit, and it’s not even on the tourism map. It’s a small bar, in the middle of a frozen tundra, where drinking is the only thing that will keep you from freezing to death. Vodka is like antifreeze in your blood, so if you want to survive your isolation, keep knocking them back.

The project, formally called Tactical Light Operator Suit, or TALOS, is aimed at providing special operators, such as Navy SEALs and Special Forces, with enhanced mobility and protection technologies.

The TALOS suit powers an exoskeleton structure that can help troops conserve energy while on patrol.

Soldiers can quickly turn off the aided “walking” if they need to move during combat.

TALOS will have a physiological subsystem that lies against the skin that is embedded with sensors to monitor core body temperature, skin temperature, heart rate, body position and hydration levels.
Lt. Cmdr. Matt Allen, SOCOM spokesman said, “The idea is to help maintain the survivability of operators as they enter that first breach through the door.”

The GPNVG-18 (Ground Panoramic Night Vision Goggle) allows for a broader field of view. In addition, the helmet can display multiple sets of data from it’s internal computers.

It can even monitor a soldier’s thoughts which can then be sent back to a command control team…they will be able to see what he’s seeing and know what he’s thinking.

Taking it a step further, the suit will monitor medical information if the soldier is wounded.

Now for the craziest technology of the TALOS, its armor.
Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) are developing a next-generation kind of armor called “liquid body armor.”

According to Mr. Allen, it “transforms from liquid to solid in milliseconds when a magnetic field or electrical current is applied”.

Lt. Cmdr. Matt Allen, SOCOM spokesman said, “The ultimate purpose of the TALOS project is to produce a prototype in 2018. That prototype will then be evaluated for operational impact.”

Come 2018, the shadow warriors from units such as Army’s (1st SFOD-D) “Delta” to the Navy SEALs (DEVGRU) “Team Six” may be taking the TALOS into harms way.
